Looking mighty sharp! Don't show it to my wife, She's been wanting a cabin cruiser.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Noticed you mentioned the bazillion holes in your gunwales...as I once saw a very smart man post...
Just thinking out loud here...
Would wood work?
Ya know, make some nice panels to cover over the entire gunwales, add a touch of class, a save you some prepping and painting...

I'm actually thinking of doing his with my project. After a half century of abuse these tin boats can really show their age. I figured a nice piece of finished wood on the top sides of both gunnels will be a whole lot easier than patching all the holes and trying somehow to flatten out all the waves in that topside aluminum. We'll see how it goes. Hoping to finish with some sort of oil instead of a varnish.

Yah, my Bert's Tracks will cover up the worst of the damage on the gunwales. The rest of the holes won't be all that bad to repair.

A quart of MarinTex goes a long way. Just put tape on the under side for the small holes. For the larger ones a aluminum sheet metal backer held in place with 5200 works great. Prop it up with a board till it sets up. Just be sure to skuff it up really well so the Tex grabs.

Your interior looks great and I'll likely finish my next one the same way. Top notch!!!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks for stopping in fellas! Yah Michael, Marine Tex ought to be the way I should go (especially on this next step) but I had some JB Weld on hand here. Kind of a "run whatcha brung" sort of a deal.

Still paint prepping here. So remember way back in the day when I chopped those "gunwale risers" off. Well that created this seam that doesn't look all that great but mainly will catch all sorts of debris and junk over time....

JB Weld slobbed all over the place...

I think I'll let that cure till tomorrow and hit it with the sander.

I got after those cabin bulkheads too. Port side is glassed on both sides, sanded down and ready for varnish. Got the starboard side cut out ready for glass work. Both got a test fit to be sure things are going like they are supposed to...

Hmmmm, do I like those? Ah sheesh, I thought we decided that I did likem, but do I really? Stewing here....

the more you look at it the more it will grow on ya...

like the green painters tape on my chief... the longer I see it with that green on the topside, the more I start to like the color...

You have to envision the helm and seating up there to get the complete picture, Jas. You're basically staring at blank canvas right now.

Jas, I've been following you for about the last eight months. Took forever to catch up! Outstanding work!! I bought a 22 ft Islander back in Oct that needs a new deck. The door extends down to within an inch of the hull. What is the door height on yours. Mine is really awkward with that deep "well" beside the helm. I'm thinking the door should be shorter when I replace the deck. thoughts? I now have two rests to do. One is a glasser

I hate sanding JB.

I don't personally like any wood in our tin boats :( (except classy old runabouts like InMotion's and maybe some of the early 60's stuff.

Hi Jas,

Glad to see you are still working on the Islander. Took a couple of weeks, but I've followed this thread from Squeaker the mouse, through Ethan (congrats), Mom (I'm sorry), Thumper's bumping oil pan, 4633 posts about batteries, and 5322 jokes. A great ride, and I look forward to following along.

I have absolutely no advice, except one: you need to name the boat! I have thee kids (one more due any day), who are about the ages of yours. My daughter (4), named ours "The magic boat". Here's the plate I had engraved, which sits by the wheel every time I ride. It may be tacky, but it's ours.

Jas, I got a call at the law office today... Seems an Islander up in Michigan is contemplating filing for divorce... Something about unfaithfulness and habitual abandonment... I was also asked about the merits of an alienation of affection suit against certain third-party defendants, namely a certain Sea Nymph and certain Joe Doe Defendants (which are believed to be various, un-named house projects and/or rental properties interfering with the mariage)...

I told her I knew the potential defendant and so I had a conflict of interest... Probably breaching confidentiality in posting this, but I just thought you should be aware that papers might get served soon.... If I were you, I'd walk out in the garage and turn a few screws just to keep her (I mean US) happy.. :).

I think it's us that's getting served...

He'll show up in August

Standing in front of a redone exterior on the house, a notarized copy of the fat new rental property agreement fully leased for 12mo, a few donor boat sized dead spots in the yard lightly dusted w/ fiberglass, AND a water ready Islander.

Oh and a couple of garbage cans full of discarded 3M 5200 tubes & a nice pile of empty coffee cans.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hey fellas, let's see if I can get caught up with you guys here eh:

Well no progress, actually none at all.

I picked up a giant pool project for the back yard and that has basically taken up all of my working time. Sun up to sundown.

I don't feel all that guilty as the pool is totally awesome! This past week has been in the 100 degree range with the heat index so the kids have spent every waking moment in there. I'm probably about 1/3 of the way through the giant deck for this thing at the moment. I should have it wrapped up by next weekend maybe?? I'll shoot up a photo for you guys when I'm done, you'll appreciate it.

Hey, did you guys know pool noodles are good for pools too? Ha!

I've still been thinking on those cabin bulkheads, still thinking, still thinking...

Pcolafisher - Hey man, thanks for following along!

I really didn't like that step down "well" in the middle of the boat. Not at all. I know it serves a purpose to make it easier to walk (sort of) into the cabin. For me it seemed like a great spot to trip and fall as well as a bunch extra unnecessary carpentry. Yup, didn't like it one bit.

So, my deck is flush, flat, all the way. My door will be shorter but I don't care a bit.

The added bonus for me was I had just barely enough room for dual fuel tanks below deck there:thumb:

Pckeen - Yah, this here Islander has a name. I actually picked it the day I brought her home:becky:

Hope yall are having a fantastic summer!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

LOLZ.. Just stumbled on this thread here and have spend several hours going through all of the interesting pages... just so happens I got out our old 1978 Islander this week so me and my father could get it running and try and capture some good ol' father and son time again like the old days. He is pushing 80 now and it means the world to him. Mechanically speaking it is like a tank and sounds and runs like an old John Deere tractor with the 120 inline 4cyl in her. Took it down to the lake today to give her a test-n-tune and literally heard water rushing into the boat like Niagra Falls... NO it wasn't a missing plug but rather the transom interior wood was so rotted that it was coming through the area around the outdrive.... BIG BUMMER and my dad is feeling a bit sad also. So, I made the decision to drop the outdrive and pop the engine tonight. Got it all disassembled in about 2 hours and then rolled back a few feet of the floor. I will remove the transom wood in the morning. I was stoked to find your thread as well as all of the nice informational up-keep you have done to keep it very helpful. I live here north of Lansing Michigan and have plenty of marine retailers in the state but I am not too sure where to start with the replacement material. It looks like it consists of about 3 layers of 3/4 marine treated plywood that is glued and screwed together and recut. Is there any special glue or adhesives I will be needing?

You picked a great thread to stumble upon. You will find it helpful to start a resto thread of your own. Don't mean to step on any toes, but sounds like you are looking for a quick answer and it sounds like Jason is up to his eyeballs in pool/deck project. Most are using Aracou Ply that is usually found at the big box stores. Tightbond III is usually the glue of choice. Wood is sealed with epoxy, spar varnish or oil based enamel porch paint. Post pictures of your project as we all like to see what everyone is working on. Welcome to iboats.
