Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

It turned our really cool.

Yah, I gotta think that Restore or this Deckover stuff will be better than Rustoleum. The gloss finish is not so good for a deck.

Kiwi Grip (and the like) at $150ish per gallon is simply not for the bottom feeders.

time to get rolling Jas, summers going quick!

I know man, I feel like time is slipping away!! I do believe you'll be me to the water by a fair margin my friend:embarassed:

Is this in lieu of carpet/marine vinyl? Looks interesting Jas.

Ya, I'm still going to run snap in carpet too. The carpet is so comfortable in the SN but food/blood/guts/worms/hooks/dirty shoes.... It's a tricky thing ya know, so, I kinda need the best of both worlds.

Just walked in from laying the second coat of DeckOver.

I am one very happy boat builder:joyous::joyous::joyous::joyous::joyous::joyous:

Should be fully cured tomorrow so I'll hit ya with some photos then eh!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

So ya, today I had this fine signage find it's way into my mailbox...

IMAG0594.jpg

I have no idea which one of you guys sent it to me but I think it's totally awesome, thanks:joyous:

I was so confused and cracking up as I was pulling it out of the envelope

You know the irony of the whole thing - just before I checked the mail box I unloaded a new (old) composite built vessel I just picked up today. And this one, won't be chopped. Nope, I'm actually going to love it, take care of it, and rebuild her to something quite beautiful:becky:

(more on that one later)

This ^^^ I would like to hear more about :)

Hmmmmmmm... I see a possible homage to WOG, perhaps. Esp given the whole crazy talk about that wooden wreck of a Chris Craft

BTW: You're welcome

We don't want any uninformed glassers wandering on to the property & straight into the buzzsaw :faint2:

Is it illegal to put bait out when you hunt in MI? You salted the yard w/ a glasser, after all. Knowing you, it's probably got it's own sign:

All are WELCOME

OK, on the cockpit, check it out:

Here are my tools, grabbed a gallon of Behr DeckOver in Harbor Gray, 6" roller covers 3/4" nap, and cheap chip brushes for the corners/edges...

I had already primed and laid the first finish coat of Rusto so I went back and sanded with 100 grit real quick, cleaned, and two coats...

I am really super happy with how this turned out, very excited! Nice, uniform, thick, matt, no slip finish. PMC mentioned up there ^^^ kind of a "concrete" type texture and I think that's a pretty good way to describe it.

I do believe this stuff will solve the complaints I had with using the Rustoleum on the deck:joyous::thumb:

You need to get that boat in the water and test that stuff out before I need to decide on a floor finish for my boat! Please, please please.

Wow Jas; That turned out fantastic. Me thinks you may have started a new trend. Am definitely keeping notes on this. Seems like I remember you are going to do snap in carpet too? The best of both fishing & just cruising. I am impressed.:thumb:

Looks good Jas... I'm taking notes! :D

TII

Man TII, you grab yourself something to float on yet? I'm kinda worried about ya!

I was just out there in the Islander. Pulled off the shoes, walking around, hanging out, thinking about stuff, thinking about the next steps, man, I really love that finish! Only time will tell but I do have high hopes for the DeckOver. It strikes me as some pretty tough/durable stuff. I think it'll be great!

(I'm just a little embarrassed :embarassed: Only a super boat nerd would be so excited about a deck finish:facepalm:)

Cat, I'll tell ya what, as I was stewing things over this morning, I was thinking I may even skip the snap in carpet now.

At this point I think I'll put the snap in carpet at the very bottom of the punch list. Maybe run her for a bit to see how I like her as is.

There's something to be said for the simple task of hosing off the deck ya know;)

Looks really good Jason, I wish I could reach out and touch it, you know bottom feeder. That way I don't have to buy some to experience it.

Looks fantastic, bro! Sounds like one more alternative to put on the deck finishing list...
Sooo, it feels nice on the tootsies...?
Will need further testing and updating when you get it out in the Sun and wet...I will be eagerly anticipating the results...;)
Happy Friday!:D

Yah man, very grippy and super comfortable on the feet and knees.

I can't wait till sea trial and legitimate "testing":thumb:

Yah, I'm actually looking forward to the Sea Nymph deck and carpet getting worked and nasty so I can re coat her too;)

I still think that vinyl is probably the best for a boat deck but once you add up cost of the vinyl, adhesive, rolling tools, ss staples, plus the time to install - the 35 bux and short time I spent just rolling it on seems super bottom feeder fun eh:joyous:

That floor looks great. I hope its cooler than the grey rubberish floor on my Islander. It gets hot to walk on in bare feet.
Have you decided on a stereo/radio? Are you installing speakers in the cuddy? I may be doing this so my little girl can listen to her music and draw while I fish.
