That floor looks great. I hope its cooler than the grey rubberish floor on my Islander. It gets hot to walk on in bare feet.
Have you decided on a stereo/radio? Are you installing speakers in the cuddy? I may be doing this so my little girl can listen to her music and draw while I fish.

Hey Rico, good to see ya man. I don't believe I've heard - did you get your totally awesome Islander back and on the water yet???

Nope, no stereo for my boat. I do love some Pearl Jam and Chili Peppers but out there, on the big lake, the sound of wind, waves (and if I play my cards right) the drag on my downrigger rod screaming:joyous: That's all I need my friend:thumb:

They shipped it back with a brand new paint job over the entire hull. Must have been a big job.
And they installed a new stereo with Sirius and ipod/usb jacks. So I was thinking of adding two additional speakers. I hope to get it wet very soon.
What is the splash date for this fine project? I am somewhat searching for a project of my own:)

Hey man... I can't remember if you put down sand on the deck during primer on this one or not?

Looking good as always Jas. i was wondering myself how that deck paint was going to come out with the sand in the epoxy already? I imagine that coating is thick enough to swallow up most of the bite of that sand... Keep at it.

Floor looks great man! Nice to have that grippiness... no point in having the little ones wiping out in all the fish guts that are sure to be in this rig!!!

Lookin great! Keep the drive alive buddy and you'll be on the water in no time.
Any thoughts on fixing that skeg? Could build it up with weld, just be careful of the heat.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I was just at Lowes buying exterior paint for my house. Olympic makes a desk restore product now also. I imagine it's very similar to the Behr. They had a test board painted with it on display. I really tried gouging it with my fingernails and this stuff was TOUGH! I was very impressed. It's probably what I'm going to go with for my (house) deck. The paint guy said everyone who has used it loves it and he has 7 gallons of it in his own garage ready to go down. He said the Rusto product is much thicker and doesn't go as far. I think this stuff is an excellent alternative to pricier "marine" coatings. Personally I wasn't overly impressed with a Kiwi Grip deck I've been on.

Ayuh,.... Was it of a Rubbery type texture, or a hard plasticy like feelin',..??

Btw, on a side note,... I noticed the other day, this thread now has more posts than Oops's Stretch the hull thread,....

Does that mean, This thread is the longest ever in the drydock,..??..??

Oh man, enjoy your brand new boat for a while, building one is a long haul!!

The new floor cover looks great too..

Hey thanks decker, good to see ya buddy!

Yup guys, I did, "salted" it into the final coat of epoxy actually. But, with two coats of this DeckOver, that pretty well ate it up. You can tell a very slight difference vs. parts of the deck I didn't lay the sand into, but very little. A few years down the road I'm sure I'll lay another coat just to clean it up. I'm sure at that third coat will make any sand vanish. Knowing what I know now I wouldn't have even bothered with the sand with using this DeckOver.

Looks great!

Yah, my initial reaction is that it should hold up pretty well over time. I tend to think much better than the standard Rustoleum.

Lookin great! Keep the drive alive buddy and you'll be on the water in no time.

Are you talking about the keel? Yah, I think I'm just going to leave it as is, no biggie.

Great to see ya Michael, I hope you are enjoying your rig this summer!

Yah, that's kinda the camp I'm in too buddy.

Yah bondo, I surely didn't mean for this thing to drag on for so long, rats. Bah, we'll see about getting her wrapped up over the summer:thumb:

Have you checked out you're out drive yet?

Outdrive is in perfect shape:

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, finally some action on this Islander! I had a whirlwind of major house projects and had to make room for the new addition to the fleet in the garage (we'll talk about that one later).

So, this morning I carefully got the big girl back up onto her ride. I really wanted to get that done prior to painting. Man it felt good to see her back on the trailer again!

Then I pulled her out into the drive for some bow rail test fit action. I actually have two options swiped from big dead glassers. I need your help choosing which one looks better eh!

So here's option #1
P1100781.jpg

P1100783.jpg

P1100782.jpg

Nice, long beefy stainless steel bow rail there.

Here's option #2
P1100784.jpg

P1100785.jpg

P1100786.jpg

That one is aluminum.

Both rails are in good shape and will be easy to shine up. Bummer but neither rails have fittings I can use. They are chrome and all pitted so they will need to be replaced.

I think I like them both for different reasons so I'm pretty torn actually.

What do you guys like?

Cheers!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I can't really tell much difference from the pics. So, I'd go with whatever one is in better shape (less bends, etc...). If you help me at gunpoint and asked me to make a decision, I would say the second to last picture up there hit my eye right. The way the down angle back to the gunwale sort of matches the angle on the window sort of makes it look factory. Also, I like the way the angle right over that window is sort of "parralell" to the top angle of the window (if that makes sense).

The only difference I see in the two is #1 terminates at an angle and #2 has a turn down. Other than that,

Pick the best fitting one - The one with less bents. :)
