Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, I've been working a little bit anyway.

I've got my strength issues ironed out on using that fir, if I go that route (more on that later). Here's one of the bulkheads, shaped, sanded, layer of glass/epoxy (one side), dry fit...

Try to get the vision of grey cockpit with white vinyl...

So I need yur opinion, ugly? Or does that look good?

I'm not so sure???? I think I like it:noidea:

The bulkhead looks good. Now do the other side! I wouldn't want to be behind you trying to choose a flavor at the ice cream store. :)

"grey cockpit with white vinyl" Should match up well. Black hull (I think I remember), grey flooring and white vinyl trim sounds classic. And if you like it, I like it. :thumb:

Like the fir bulkhead. Nice work.

What weight glass? Then using Spar to protect against UV?

Thanks JB, this is going to be long process to finish up all 4 pieces.

Yup, prolly 3 coats of varnish after 3 coats of epoxy. Using 6 oz cloth here.

Good decision making skills there Jason:facepalm: I think the colors look great together. I can't remember from back in the volumes, but do you have a nice wood trimmed steering wheel to tie it all together?

I know man, I stink. Some stuff I'm very decisive, other stuff, not so much, embarrassing really.

For the steering I have a nice chunk of stainless. I think I may have posted up a photo way back in the day.

Well, not a lot of progress here. Jen let me out on work release so the boys and I spent some time in the sun with the Sea Nymph as our transport:becky:

Thanks Jen, you are an amazing bride!:joyous:

That's the best reason not to be boat building: BOAT USING!

I like the bulkhead choice.... I think it's going to be plenty strong and look awesome!

Also like the fact that you got to go boating today!

More fresh fish?

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hey thanks fellas!

So I've been tending to some life stuff, not a lot of time on the Islander.

I have been picking away at cockpit paint prep, sand, fill, clean, yadayada. Nothing special to show for it really.

I'll get there, someday....

Hey Jas

Glad to see you going with solid wood. It can be trickier, but the look can't be matched with ply. quick question: you said the old bleacher seating VG fir was "too dry?" Not sure I follow... That aged VG would be more stable than any new stock you could pick up, especially neatly sealed under that modern miracle combination of glass fabric and epoxy resins!

Just don't think I'm trying to talk you into changing your mind a 12th time, now that you've started working. You've got a boat to finish! Was just interested in your thought process.

I hope everything is going alright in the Jas household. His activity has seemed to wane a bit of late.

I think him and the boys are having so much fun on the SN, he's leaving boat building till the ice comes back.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Yah, sorry fellas, I'm still here, just kinda slow lately. Most of my time has been split fishing on the Sea Nymph (awesome), some on house projects, some school stuff, and some legit Islander work. Though the Islander work has only been paint prep, boring. The temps around here should be climbing up a bit so I really need to be ready to go in short order. I'm just about ready for the cockpit, just about ready with the hull too. I still have a bunch to do on the topsides though (swiss cheese).

So long as we are on the paint topic...

The other day I caught a photo of a nice Sylvan Offshore, and got me thinking.

One thing I know for sure is this boat will be Navy Blue over white. My original plan was to bring the blue all the way down to the chine. About like this, lower though, right down to the bottom...

Then I saw this Offshore, like it, very nice boat...

It got me reconsidering how much blue I want on the hull sides, so yah, I might be thinking about like this eh...

I dunno, I think I'll stew about it a little longer.

Nothing big here, just yakkin about boat stuff is all:D
