Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

So, well, yesterday I spent most of the day cleaning up the garage and shop. Sure seems like the garage is clean, organized, all good, then gremlins come in and mess it all up. This Islander was was getting crowded by all manner of kid gear.

This morning I sat in the Islander, and drank coffee, and looked, and thought, and chewed, and schemed. It was a good time;) Worked through a few steps and tweaked a few plans.

One of the things that just happened to pass through my grey matter was the possibility of using this oil tank that was for the Evinrude 90 I just grabbed...

...for a kicker fuel tank on the Islander. I'd have to add a vent somehow. I'd guess it's only a gallon, maybe 1.5?? Idunno, maybe not worth the hassle. Just thinking is all:)

I think I would sell the oil tank or use it for something else,...........

And just buy a fuel tank for the kicker,...

My reasoning is I would rather have a six gallon tank for the kicker, Not so much for fishing,...

But in the event of a main engine failure it gives you more fuel to make it back to shore without having to switch fuel sources,...

Yah I hear ya, even if I could get it to work it's a bit small. Scratch...

Edit: Looks like it's a 1.8 gallon. Maybe think about it for another 1/2 minute. It is a freebe after all.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Ok, here's something fun that happend today, check it out...

Some of you who follow along pretty close (condolences) know that I picked up a 15 HP Evinrude a few months ago. Well, that was a remote version. At the time it didn't bother me as I was simply planning to tie it to the main, no biggie. Then I was thinking, "huh, it would be kind of cool to be able to control at the stern as well.". So, I started looking for a tiller arm to add on. Ugh, expensive. So, well, I ended up selling that kicker.

Today I snatched up a 1989 Evinrude 15 HP longshaft, electric start, tiller. The fella actually delivered it right to my school, great guy! It's in excellent condition, a lot better than the other one I had.

I'll see about some video of it running here in the next day or two.

Oh yah, buy low, sell high was in full effect for both these deals.

Happy Jas:D

So I got the new (old) kicker home, quick whipped up a kicker cart out of this yard cart. Here it is, 1989 Evinrude 15 HP, Long Shaft, Electric Start...

wait for it, wait for it...........

I knew I heard someone say TILLER while I was at work!!!!

That will work good Jas,...........I would still plan a bar between the two but it is nice to have the option of the tiller handle in certain situations,...

Yah, I'd still tie it to the main. I'm just thinking that sometimes I might like to be at the stern, fishing, trolling, steering, hanging out:)

You could also make a homemade "troll master" type control to run the throttle from the helm,...

A waterproof control box some wire a rheostat and some servos mounted under the hood and Bob's your uncle,....

Nice addition. I just recently picked up an '89 15hp Johnson. Great engine. If you are planning on using the tiller handle there are also a lot of options for extending the handle if needed. I think you now have all the parts to complete this islander project, now just to put them all together;) Have a great weekend.
