Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, so I shot a few photos this morning just for comparison purposes...

I tossed the batt on a 4x4 at the stern...

The height was perfect for me to slide my shoes under.

But, as you can see, the batt still sticks out some...
P1080047.jpg

I really want that curtain to hang flat and look nice. Kind of a fit and finish thing ya know. And, I have no real interest in bringing two batts any higher up on the transom. So, in short, batts at the stern/transom idea is out.

Also, I have ruled out that the batts will go at midships in the seat boxes. I really want that space to be for tackle storage n stuff.

So, basically, these will go in front of the engine, and I'm totally cool with that.

I'm not a fan of this...

Here's JB's idea...
P1080045.jpg

These next two shots would be a very similar build, just that my rod holders would be placed differently...

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Sorry buddy! Yah, I sure don't need another boat around my place!! <<-- Less this, although it isn't ever about 'need' really is it???

You could go alum though;)<<-- I was expecting much more of this

I'll post up some thoughts on batt placement in a sec. Thanks a bunch for the drawings! << Ugly, I know, but good enough for reference

Good luck getting through to the weekend! As usual, keep up the good work...

I think you should make a mock up of your dog house with a frame and see what it is like. That is a long narrow tunnel to get down. If it works out then awesome. I just know that when you have 2 riggers, a diver and a few long lines out each side (very basic set up) and guys trying to set lines and net fish it gets crowded. If you want you could build a storage box in the transom where you were talking about the battery for your tackle. That would be a nice place to put it then you could have your batteries up front. I know that my engine wires are pretty heavy gauge and if I remember right you want as small amount of lead as possible (I have never wired an engine so I may be WAY off!) Are you going with electric downriggers and flood lights? That is a lot more wires to think about. You are going to have a lot of wires running under your dog house if you go that route. You want them out of the way but still accessable. There is a ton to think about!

Jas, Just had a quick thought, would a shelf and stacking the batteries in front of the motor do anything for you. It would allow for larger angles on the front of the dog house. More deck space.

Thanks man, just need to keep the blades turnin;)

Take a quick look at my time stamps for my posts, yah, I think about stuff (way more than I should sometimes my friend).

Yah, I considered this, still could be an option too.

The trade off would be just a little extra deck space at the cost of an extra seat and rod holders. I'd just need to weigh out what I would want more of ya know. So basically, do I want a seat and rod holders, or, roughly 1 sq. feet of deck space. Yah, I spose I'd lean toward the seat/rod holders.

Good thinking osby:)

You could always put the batteries under the driver and passenger seats by building a long flat platform on each side, thats a foot tall by however wide the cabin walls are by 3 feet long on each side and the mount the seats on them. You would get the batt's hidden and forward, then get some storage space. Two things you will have to do then is, up the wire size to the back of the boat to handle the amperage and keep the wires cool, Then vent the battery boxes.

I would do this before I put the batteries in front of the dog house. Trust me and maddiedog you really don't want to clog up your deck space like that, its bad enough that the dog house is as big as is. You could have somone sit on the dog house if you needed to, but your figuring on puttting in some removable jump seats in the back along with the permant seats up front so you should be good with seating. Anything more than four adults on the boat and things will start to get really closed in quick if your fishing.

As far as rod holders think radar arch with a rocket launcher, then you could mount all sorts of stuff to it, radar dome, bimini, gps antenna, ship to shore antenna, planner board reels, lights, etc... There is a guy in Bay City that makes them, he had one on his islander and it was sweet.

If you want, I could let you look at how my boat is set up and get a feel for how things are on it.

Shame those batteries won't fit back there. I know the newer Islanders have the batteries back there. I wonder if Optima make a narrow 12v battery. You can run those in any position and maybe tipped on end they would be narrower?

Jas - You shouldn't listen to me, especially when I quoted EZ and his "I/O I/O" thing. Besides when the alignment bar slid like BUTTA, you were joyous. Don't give a bracket & O/B another thought. Got it? Good :D

Yah, I actually already have plans for that set up. But, that's where I am planning to store my tackle and such, eh.

Yah, no doubt. For seating I'm mainly thinking of family boat rides n stuff.

I'd love that! I've been kinda thinking about rocket launcher stuff but $$$ wise that may be an add on in another year or two.

If you want, I could let you look at how my boat is set up and get a feel for how things are on it.

Uh, sweet! So long as I'm standing on your rig, we might as well haul it to the bay and run a few lines off the back:)

I should have you over to eyeball my old tub too. Sometimes photos on the web just fall a little short in description ya know.

Well, ya gotta remember too rico, I chopped prolly 6" off of this stern gunwale here so the batts would have easily fit under the original set up. I'm really glad I made that move to give me the extra deck space! I'll figure out the rest, no biggie.

OK:redface:

I might think about it a little though:D

Oh ya! Hey! I have one more thing to fit into all this set up rigging stuff. As of just a few hours ago, I'll need to figure a spot for a small 2 stroke fuel tank too:)

I scored backup propulsion for this Islander:D:D

jas, been watching and reading and watching and reading, etc...awesome project, but the whole time I'm watching the videos of your battery placement predicament I was thinking (which is dangerous) couldn't he just extend the stern gunwale? Doh! If you were taking votes (iboats is a democracy, right?) I like the set-up in post #3701, the third layout...with a flip-up jump seat and rod holders!

See now, when I was originally thinking about that particular option I was guessing it would be an easy sell to just about all the guys. Not so much eh:confused:

I really like it but I'll definitely need to put some careful thought into it to make sure it's a good move.

Thanks for chipping in man:)

Wudja get?

200 HP Etech. That should make for a nice kicker eh:D

Nah, nah, I kid! Joke, only a joke!

I'll see about getting a few photos for ya in the a.m.;)

Baja - Yah, I won't be grabbing up any $800 batts any time soon, yikes!!! At the deck there I prolly only have about 8" or so. I know there is a way to get all this set up. Getting function is easy, getting form is pretty easy too. But, having both is juuuuuust the ticket! I'll get it figured;)

(By the way bajaunderground, I'm very surprised that you are willing to associate with the likes of me considering, well, considering "incident" with Thumper:eek:)

Mccraney - there is the true blood IO guy:)

OK, now, about that kicker, lemme go snap some shots.....

Happy Saturday guys!:D

Howdy there Partner. Good Sat. morning to ya.:) Please check your PM box for a message from me. I drew up something that might be helpful. Congrats on the pusher motor. Perhaps you can strap the gas can to your swim platform when your using it ??? Keeps it outside your boat = no spills. Just throwing them out there hoping something will stick. My vote is for #4 on the battery situation. Makes the most sense to me. Keep on chugging. You're doing great. PS. I miss the videos. BOO HOO :( :D

Thanks tall man!!! I'll post up what you drew as soon as I an figure out how to see your work there...

K, here is the new kicker, 1993 Evinrude 15 HP Longshaft Electric (and rope) Start, with controls and fuel tank....

Issues:

She started up just fine but kinda wanted to die out after giving a little throttle then backing off (fuel delivery issue???). Choke in and she'd keep running. I'll need to work though that to see what's going on there.

She is just a little scratched up n such nothing big. The cowl (hood) won't sit right on the housing. You can see the latch on the back broke off and looks like somebody JB'd it. No sweat, I have a plan to fix that and I'll get her all cleaned up and painted minty new like.

Good Stuff:

LU oil looks great, power head looks great, overall good condition. Easy to throw on the shoulder and move around if need be. Electric start and shift/throttle control will be super awesome. All said, I think this OB will be a great match for the Islander!

(And, most important, I paid less than you think, yesssssssss)

(For my own future reference, Model # E15RELETB)

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

:DGood Score Jay, but I Really don't think you want a 2 stroke on the back of your boat. You should let me store that on the back of my boat for you. I have a bracket already on mine so I won't have to to any fab work, and there is a place on mine to put the gas tank. That way its not taking up valuable space in your garage for the rest of the build, or have to deal with all that smelly 2 stroke exhaust on the back of your boat.;)

I'll swing by tomorrow and get it out of your way:p
