Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

After you guys reminded me, I happened to mention to Jen...

Me: "So, you know what the significance of today is?"

Jen: "No, what?"

Me: "Well, January 8 2011 I brought home the Jet Star. And, January 8 2010 I brought home the Islander. Pretty cool huh!:D"

Jen: "Yah, cool:rolleyes:"

Me: "So yah, the guys over on the iboats board were wondering what I'm bringing home today:)"

Jen: "Yah, I got something to say to those guys over on iboats!:eek::eek:"

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I don't know about that ^^^^
Just think of the progress he'll make if he's eating, drinking & sleeping in the Islander when Jen revokes both his house & bedroom passes. That would give him an unlimited yard & boat pass.... It is a cuddy cabin ya know.:)

Even a free 1/8/2012 FIBERGLASS outboard hull might be at too high a cost!:D:eek::facepalm:

Have a great week. The crew has requested a shore leave pass to the dog park again today. Approved!;)

Jas:

RE: your post #3346: the appropriate response would have been:

"Diamond encrusted bling, sweetheart... :) I just needed the trailer under this junk fiberglass hull to tow it home! So you wouldn't notice the Tiffany's box in my pocket":p

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

With the Jet out of the garage I pushed the Islander diagonal and found myself with a little bit of elbow room, much better:)

I got to work on the Gimbal Housing tear down. Trim limit switches came off no trouble...

And then the hinge pins - Merc special tool and the pin...
IMAG0353.jpg

I cut the U joint bellows, the sea water tube, and the exhaust bellows and here it is removed, hanging by the shift cable...

That's as far as I got today. More to come on the tear down and rebuild.

Really sorry about the bad cell phone photos, they stink.

Hey Jas, just wanted to stop in and say im slowly making it through your whole thread, im on page 40 now.
IMO your coverage of what you've done sets the standard in a build thread.
Its nice to see that boat building and drinking beer don't necessarily have to go together as I gave up drinking a while back myself :D
Keep up the great work sir it motivates me!!

Oh man, yur trying to read the whole thing!!:facepalm:

Yur a gonner. Lost in an odyssey of aluminum confusion. Sorry man:redface:

Well, thanks for the kind words buddy, and welcome aboard!

Yah, I couldn't handle my alcohol. It was all or nothing for me (took me a while to figure this out). Had I not given it up, I'd be in jail or dead (most likely the latter). Once I let that go, I could sure see a whole lot more clear too. Some major changes in my world in the years 98 and 99. I do have a beer from time to time, a couple per year maybe just to celebrate special things.

I do believe I'll have one at the end of this project:)

That's a big milestone man. It's starting to look like a real boat and not just a pile of parts as the wife would say.

You've got to get that Merc tech sign out on the street where people can see it :) Your shop does good work.

I have heard mixed reviews about that pivot pin tool. Did it work good for ya? From what I have read the tool will round out the pins and that an allen wrench works just as good. Good to see forward progress anyway :D Have you put any thought into replacing that shift cable while your in there (sorry if I missed it). Sometimes it's hard to tell the condition from the outside. Would hate to see you have to tear back into it once you get it together due to a broken shift cable.

Thanks for the encouragement Sprint - I am feeling pretty good about how this is going so far. Just taking it slow, trying not to screw up ya know:redface:

The Merc Pin Tool worked just fine for me. The port side came off no prob. The Starboard took some serious push but it saw things my way. When it let loose I was actually afraid that it stripped, thankfully it didn't!

Yah, I'd suppose an allen wrench would work just fine to though too.

I'm not going to replace the shift cable as it looks in great shape. Matter of fact, everything looks really good in there (aside from the rust stuff inside the U Joint Bellows). Everything looks well greased, no corrosion, everything rubber is pliable and in great shape... This whole driveline actually got a major overhaul right before I bought it (I found a big stack of receipts). It shows too.:)

I'll make some popcorn!

Ah, not that exciting buddy...

-------------------------------------

K, my camera is acting up so here is a short, low quality video for ya...

I was able to snap a couple of photos. Here is how I started this morning...
P1080014.jpg

Here is my flex shaft screw driver - I don't know how I would have pulled all that stuff off with out it...
P1080015.jpg

I picked it up at my local auto parts store for $25. Kinda pricey for a screwdriver but worth it when you have to do stuff like that ^^^^.

Everything made of rubber pulled off...

On deck, pull the bearing and clean everything up.

Ya should bring a camera too, we need to capture a pix of the formerly nocturnal Jas working/posting during 'normal' people daylight hours.

I 'used' to be able to check in on the progress over coffee, pre-work. Now it's over coffee at work. The boss is thrilled.....

I woke up way to early again today:redface:

Oh well, worked on the Merc install and got a solid run in:)

How did you remove the gimbal bearing?

Bearing is on deck, tomorrow or the next day maybe. I'll probably grab a bearing puller/slide hammer from the Auto Parts store (tool loan). This process has gone well so far, I hope that manuver does too:)
