Bearing is on deck, tomorrow or the next day maybe. I'll probably grab a bearing puller/slide hammer from the Auto Parts store (tool loan). This process has gone well so far, I hope that manuver does too:)[/QUOTE]

Cool,

I need to pull the bearing from my Volvo DPS drive so I'm interested is all...

Shoot, just cuz, I'll video me hammerin it out....

ooooooooooo....

Just thought of something.

That will probably be a loud activity. Like wake up the whole house cuz I work so early in the morning type. Yah, you'd see the wife come hollar at me on the video if I did that! Fry pan attack:eek:

So ok, I'll need to wait till I can hammer during the day:)

That rust inside the bellows are might be from before the drive was serviced. The shop that worked on maybe didn't clean it well since it's out of sight. I'll be watching for the hammer and skillet show.

Hammer - Skillet show, that's good:D

Yah that could be.

The only other thing I could think how that water got in the bellows was...

Maaayyybe water was dripping onto the U Joint shaft from above on the inside of the boat? See, there was a sun pad right over the engine and the boat was fully exposed to the elements for a couple of years. So, maybe water dripped/dribbled off the sun pad, down the U Joint shaft and found it's way into the bellows??? Maybe? I dunno, just a thought. I might be reaching here.

I/O's: Not Even Once.

I was wondering when I'd hear from you:p

Hey man, I have seen way worse drivelines around this place. So far, I consider myself very fortunate:) (so far)

Hey man,

Loved the vid... Cool set-up on the shop... Love that you can dual-purpose the stairs to access the boat.

I am no engine guy (as you well know), but I think i read on the merc forum that water can only get there from the inside of the boat if your bellows are sound... Sometimes high water in the bilge can back up in there.... Possible if thumper's prior owner sloshed it around.... Or, of course, if thumper went snorkeling one time (just messing, surely not)......

You might have to tangle a little to get that bearing out, since it's rusted. At least your bearing race didn't rust to your yoke like mine did.... That, of course, led to wrestlemania 2011 with my o/d... fun times...

Please keep the vids coming... Selfishly, I would love to see a play by play of you putting that thing back together....

Thanks man. Yah, I'd do more videos but you guys would see me standing around and thinking wayyyy more than you'd see legitimate work happening:rolleyes: Maybe on the next project I'll go full on video.

Yup, the more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards water dripping onto the drive shaft and following it back into the bellows. Still just a guess though.

I still can't believe you pulled your drive off with the bearing attached:D

You mean like what you started with?

Yup, that. Or, I was also thinking about what Kelly C. started with. I believe he ended up getting his drive off with blasting powder.

Great video Jason. How are the ujoints? Also looking forward to the Hammer and Skillet Show lol.

The U Joints have (what looks like) just a bit of surface rust on em. We'll see once I start handling the drive. Yah, as I am working inside the gimbal housing and such, everything is in really good shape actually. Just that rusty looking stuff is kinda laying on the surface really. All the rubber is soft and pliable, grease in all the right places, no corrosion to speak of... Pretty happy with with I see really:)

Video upload in progress:D

All right, Gimbal Bearing action...

Yesterday I grabbed some gear from my local auto parts store on my way home. This morning I got all set up, ready for pulling, and was quickly stumped...

...30 seconds later...

...and 30 seconds after that...

I kinda thought I was a more patient man than that ^^^

Or, I really wanted the gimbal bearing out:D

I see a web cam in Jas's future, maybe early successful splash gift??? 2 or 3 strategically placed @ the shop & maybe have 1 low mounted w/ a wide angle fisheye above your 'new' heat dump outlet to get a good outdrive shot...

The miraculously generous 'glass donor craft's sacrifice just continues to pay off!;)

You know the splash date will have to be sooner than next year. i think we are all being fair in expecting say a March splash, ok maybe towards the begining of April......:D

Re; third vid - To quote Staples - "That was easy"

?? - Couldn't you have done all this from the inside the transom? If you could, it's still good practice for down the road if the seal and bearing need replacement without pulling the 4.3. And the good part - No skillet was harmed during the making of this movie.

You are very lucky. All that rust and corrosion usually makes life a lot more difficult. You got off easy.If you have an burrs or high spots where the bearing race/carrier or oil seal sit, sand them down flat.If everything don't seat back in flat,it could shorten the life of the bearing and oil seal.

I really feel bad for most of my teachers who had to deal with me over the years. And my mother, God bless her:redface:

HA! Yah, nope. That won't happen:facepalm:

"That was easy"

It's kinda funny, I have stewed about and thought over and read about and watched videos and iboats and dreamed about... this exact move since the day I brought home Thumper the Baja.

What was it, like a 10 second manuver:rolleyes: Ah well, it's out:D

?? - Couldn't you have done all this from the inside the transom?

Ahnope, everything has to come out the back end.:p

Yah, like I mentioned, everything looks really quite good with the exception of that surface rusty powder stuff.

Lucky? Tell ya what, I think I am super fortunate the PO spent all that dough maintaining this driveline right before I bought it. Cash and headaches saved on my part:)

Shoot buddy, I didn't know you guys needed to see work and progress?? I just come around here at an outside chance I could score some rhubarb pie or something. Ala mode!:)

Nah, if you want to see real work happening you need to go to a thread like this!

Wait no that was a bad example, that guy is just a fair weather boat builder. Let me see if I can find something else:p
