Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

On this day last year we were at U of M Medical for Ethan's brain surgery. Actually, right about this time I was holding him with my left arm and holding the mask to his face, administering anesthesia, with my right. I hugged him tight, laid him down on the operating table, turned and walked out of the room leaving his life in their hands.

Those were far and away the most difficult and horrible minutes of my entire life.

Fast forward one year later...

He is a champ and 100%! Here we are at Trunk N Treat on Halloween Night...

Here he is with his older brother and sister, Ryan and McKenna, being goofs...

I gave Ethan an extra long hug this morning before I left for work.

I am entirely blessed that the Good Lord put such excellent Docs in our lives! I am entirely blessed that I get to be the father of such awesome kiddos!

Guys on iboats - thanks for your prayers and support. Much appreciated!

Ethan - I love you so much son. Thanks for letting me hang out with ya buddy:)

JO,
great bunch of deck hands you got there. I am glad to hear that after a year later Ethan is doing great and that the good lord was able to answer your prayers. Our most precious resources do not come from the earth as is proof in your pic............. God bless to you and your family and to continued health and healing

Jason - For all the tinny vs glasser, which O/B is better and the bad news in the world threads, this one post trumps them all. When I started lurking on iboats before joining I went thru this Islander rebuild saga from the beginning and ran into your first posts about Ethan's diagnosis and surgery, I skipped around and finally joined so I could find good news about your son. Thanks for the good news follow-up. Take the day off and let Ethan stay up late tonight.

Wow... I can't imagine how difficult it was to walk out of that room. Thanks for posting. While our boats are fun parts of our lives, this really gives you some perspective on what is truly important. I know we share the view that our children are beautiful, un-repeatable miracles of God...., but that feeling probably really hits home on day like to day (in fact, my youngest little girl, turns one today). So, one year ago, we were both in hospitals for drastically different reasons, but still putting our faith in the docs and the big man upstairs.

Have a great day!

Well said mccraney:)

lol, soooo sounds like me on some days!!!

Yah, that was the day I dragged the rig home. I was geeked and not really thinking clearly, ha! And, well, I was fearing for my health and well being (the wife swings a mean fry pan:eek:).

Thanks for swinging through fellas. I'll be back working on this Islander soon enough to see the project through. I'm really looking forward to getting her on the water this summer!

Re: 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Right after I bought my first boat this earlier this year[14' 1964 Starcraft(Still can't figure out exactly what model)] people were telling me that by next Summer I'll want something "meatier". Well this thread along with photos of other Islanders has made me want one. The only thing that is stopping me is my car has a 1700lb towing limit. Can't wait to see some pics in the Water!!

I'm really looking forward to getting her on the water this summer!

I think you missed that by a couple months :) but I know what you mean.

Great looking crew ya got there. Glad everyone is healthy and doing well. I have two little ones myself and I don't know what I would do if something ever happened to one of them. It gives me chills just thinking about it. Take care Jason.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Jason,

First of all, THANKS!

I started following your thread on the 68 SC Jet awhile back.
Since I started my itchy resto, I have been lurking and reading about everyones trials and tribulations in an effort to better edjumicate myself in all this boat restoration thing.
I enjoy and have fun with all the good natured teasing between the glassers and the tinnys.
This is my first personally owned boat in my life and it has become as much a part of my life as anything mechanical can be.
This boat has given me and my family and friends a great deal of fun and pleasure in the short time I have owned.
Unfortunately, a couple of months ago, due to a completely unforseen blockage in the cooling system, the motor blew up.
Well besides the fact that I had bought this boat on a shoestring budget, and gotten it in the water for same kind of budget, I always knew that it had issues.
The motor blowing up, brought those issues clearly into the fore front. If I was going to keep this boat, it would need a complete restoration.
That is when I made the decision that I could do this.
The thing that made that decision for me is knowing that I had stumbled upon the best website in the world regarding boats and the group of guys here that take the time to help, inspire, teach, jibe, rib, harrass, egg-on, support, and just flat out keep us going in this crazy wacky endeavor we have decided to embark upon, is absolutely, positively, the BEST!
I have used and will continue to use the wealth of knowledge that is the Iboats Boat Restoration threads and Iboats Forum, in general, to continue learning and enjoying this wonderful hobby.
I am also proud to say that I can now add your entire saga with this 76 SC Islander rebuild to my own personal knowledge base.
You sir, are a continuing inspiration and a true reflection of the fantastic spirit that embodies the Iboats fraternity.
I have learned so much from your thread and gotten so many great ideas and tips, that there is no price that could be put on it.
As I read through your thread, I have laughed both at and with you, I have also prayed and cried for you and your family, and I am honored and priviledged to have been able to enjoy this amazing journey.
Thanks to you, and all of the iboats community for making this possible.
I will be eagerly awaiting the "Splash" days of both your Starcrafts.
May the Good Lord Smile kindly upon you and your family, may the warm breezes and still waters fill your days with joy, may your coolers overflow with salmon and walleyes and all manner of yummy sea creatures, and may your tubing and skiing be filled with wonderful laughter and happiness from all who sail with you.
God Bless and Godspeed,
GT1M

PS- enough of the mushy stuff, get one or the other splashed, soon!
BTW- if there is any thing you need learnin, just ask...If I don't know it:confused:, someone here on Iboats will...:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Andrew - Thanks man! Yah, my little crew there is the bombdiggity:D

GT - Wow! Thanks for the super kind words buddy. I am honored that you'd take the time to wade through the nonsense and am really glad you were able to grab a couple of good pieces of info in all that, ha!:)

Really, while this boat is just kind of a fun project, you, a the other fellas that hang around here, know it's much more than that. Way more than just a boat. So far, rebuilding this Islander has helped me through certainly the hardest days of my life. I've been able to "fix" this metal tub while I could do nothing to "fix" the ones I love so much. That, along with my Hope, carried me through.

Once she is on the water, this rig should provide years of family fun, memories, and bonding. Over time, life lessons and character qualities will no doubt make way into the lives of my little ones.

That's just a couple pieces.

Yah, much more than a boat.;)

Thanks a ton and rock on:D

Well put Jason, Even though I joined half way through your build I still feel like i was there helping you (even though I had little advice to offer). This is well documented. Family is a big part of our adventures and the boats do tend to be good therapy.

Yah, I enjoy that you guys keep me on my toes. It's an accountability piece of sorts, keeping the blades turning, cranking this project out, ya know:)

Yup, I'm doing what I can with the photos and the write up so fellas can learn from both the dumb stuff and smart stuff I do:D

Been there done that. Don't give up. I rebuilt/restored a 1970 Starcraft Chieftain. At the worst time's do not loose hope. He is where mine started to what it came out like Hope you get your fire back.

As sold

Under construction. Even had to go deeper in the restoration. 500 hull rivets needed to be replaced.

As you can see after alt of work it will all be good. I tried to restore to original. But had to include a couple of upgrades.

If you have an question email me. I'll help you along.

My new project is a 1991 Bayliner trophy 2002. Transom rebuild check it out at http://www.baylinerownersclub.org/forum/showthread.php?t=52605

JK,

Is that a Merc. 470 motor in your 1979 Starcraft?
