Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I have been looking at newer kickers just for the fun of it and even they are pretty heavy. A new 15hp Evinrude e-tec is 183 pounds  A new 4 stroke 9.9 merc is 96 pounds. Just some food for thought :D I think the older 2 strokes are much lighter.

183# for a 15! Not even a 4S either, man that is heavy.

Yah, when I look at it in person I may back off the deal. I really want to ability to pull it off, move it around, and get it out of the way as easily as possible. I have no interest in a permanent mount kicker. I wasn't even thinking 4S originally but the price on this one sure has me thinking.

Even moving that Johnson around is a chore. They are kind of awkward to handle sometimes, especially when you have to pull them off the bracket.

Well shoot. Yah, that 4 stroke is going to be in the 100# range, T&T might even make it heavier. I'm not into that heavy of a kicker, not for what I want to do with it. He was going to let me have it for $700, super smoking deal for that Evinrude but no matter if it doesn't serve the purpose, eh. Oh well.

Thanks for chipping in fellas:)

My new 15 HP Merc is 128lbs. and it's not really that bad moving it around with a second set of hands. But solo it's a bit of a bear. My '72 Rude 6 HP 2 stroke is a one hand kind of job... I'm looking forward to the day that I can mount it back on my little Grumman and use the 15 as a kicker in my Islander. :D Or Chieftain. :D:D

I really think you should get it. 4 stroke would be nice and can be plumbed off the same tank.

Hey Jason,...

Here's a good deal up in Da' UP,...

http://up.craigslist.org/boa/2614039582.html

I saw that one on Cl today thought about going to take a look at it but about 3 hours away and not sure what I'm doing for a kicker yet. I think that 4 stroke would be great on the Islander Jas BIL has a four stroke honda with auto pilot on his Bayliner awesome and no extra tanks to mess with .

I know, I know guys. Sweet four stroke, great shape, T&T, controls, the works. And, rockin good deal to boot. I hear ya guys.

But I really don't want a kicker to live on the transom and I know I won't be moving around a 100# + very often.

ER has what my goal is...

My '72 Rude 6 HP 2 stroke is a one hand kind of job...

I definitely want a quick and easy deal ya know. ON/OFF cake move kinda thing. Like done fishing for the day, time to do some tubing/swimming, pull the kicker off and go have fun. I'll be way less inclined to do that with a big heavy OB. Knowhatta mean?

Honestly, With the Great Lakes I think a kicker should always live on the back of the boat,...

If not for fishing to at least give you another option to get to shore WHEN the main engine fails for one reason or another,....And the 9.9 is about as small as I would go on a boat the size of your Islander,......

Agreed. On the Great Lakes there is no way I'd leave a kicker behind. Inland lakes, less worried. If the kicker is small/light enough I can always toss it in the cabin;)

I dunno, maybe I'll go "look" at that Evinrude.

Tim's "lives" on the back. If you saw and experienced his setup, you'd go buy that 4 stroke in a heartbeat.

Hey Jas,
If you find a great deal on an old 'Rude 6 horse and the guy seems sketchy, do me a favor and put a close pattern into his midsection for me because he stole mine out of my locked storage room this morning! Along with my mower, weed-whacker, and my GF's kayak! I've reported the serial #'s to the PD and hope that the idiots that took them try to sell them on craigslist or to a pawn shop.

DOOD that sucks! I really hope you catch them.

Jason - I've been planning to use my Johnson 6HP long shaft as kicker on my Islander. I can carry that thing around with one hand. Guy I bought my Islander from said it would be perfect as a kicker (for whatever that's worth).

Teamster said don't go below a 9.9 for a boat this size, so I will definitely need to test the 6HP as a kicker on some small local lake before I ever go out on Superior with it. I too am not going to tempt Lake Superior unless I know my kicker is big enough to get me home if/when the main takes a crap.

I also have a 'rude 9 short shaft that needs work so I spose I could get that running and try it as a kicker as well, but I don't know if a short shaft is long enough for this application. A yard stick could prolly answer that one.

ER, that stinks, big time. That had to have been a shocker when you opened up the shed door:eek:

PR - Yah buddy, get that 6 horse hooked up and give me the full report. If I were a betting man I'd say it would push it fine but struggle a bit in the wind. I'm thinking with our lighter weight hulls we can get away with a sub 10hp kicker though, ya know.;)

That fella is showing that Evinrude to another guy tonight so it may be gone. Ah well, if it is, no biggie, another will be along:)

Be glad to give you the full report, but it ain't gonna be this year. I'll be winterizing this week!

I bet you've got that exactly right. But that's not a problem, it never gets windy on Lake Superior.
