Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Is there any chance the lids on the flotation bottles could work loose? I know that if I leave a bottle like that outside for the winter with a tight lid its loose come spring time. The bottles actually deform from the change in temp. But it get very cold where I live (-40)
Did you glue them on?

Nope, didn't glue them on. I was very particular about tightening them actually. I suppose if a soap jug gremlin crawled subdeck and started monkeying with em they may come off. Course I haven't seen any of those around my neck of the wood in years;)

Its not gremlins I'd worry about.
Take an empty jug and put the lid on. Throw it outside in the winter.
In a few minutes it's collapsed to 2/3 its size. Repeat daily.
It doesn't get too cold where you live so this may not apply. But it would happen where I live over the course of one winter.
Just sayin.

Well rico, you bring up a good point. North Beach brought that up when I was considering this route too. I did think it through.

Here's the thing...

Dumping the last few drops into the wash machine, toss it into the recycling bin in the dead of winter, starts to collapse. Yup, got it. But, you are going from what, 80 degrees to below zero? Tremendous temp variance obviously, warm to cold. More dense air to less dense air and the effects are obvious on the jug. In nature (at least here in MI) we have swings in temps but not 80 deg + difference in the span of a minute. Once the jug is acclimated the expand/contract with the temps is really not that big of an issue. Check your containers in the garage that live out there year round. I don't think I have ever seen lids off of my plastic fuel cans or other chemicals in plastic jugs.

Also, you'll notice that the big sides of jugs move in/out with the temp variations. You can just pinch it with your fingers (with just a little pressure) and see that happen. Certainly not going to unscrew a top though.

As for flotation/displacement the jug will provide at freezing cold temps - not so worried as this Islander will never be in the water breaking ice;)

Hey, did your Islander get delivered yet? Shoot up some photos when she arrives eh!

Cheers

Well what da ya know?.... Heck it only took me a few few pages to catch up on the boat. You're life is a different story, I am sorry for your'e loss my friend.
Dag gone it, I could have stayed away a little longer, I mean the boat isn't floating yet???? Jason, I love ya brother, but c'mon. Don't mama and the young'uns deserve a trip on the water yet or are you just trying to impress us?

Nuff said and teasing, love ya bro. You have been doing what all of us have wished to do and you are teaching in the process (uh, you are a teacher, aren't you?)
No sappy sh**$ Get your'e butt to work, as if you haven't, and realize I am now back and ON your'e back.
If all others think I am being hard on Jas, well, I am. We push each other. God Bless You All.

Holly Carp He is back!

Jason, sorry for the loss. You know how to reach me, Dale

Hmmm I wonder if You lose buoyancy or not as the infamous flotation contracts in colder temperatures? Still the same amount of air in there just taking up less space. Only concern I could see with this is over the years the expanding and contracting might cause the bottles to crack but even if 1/2 of em had a slow leak I think You would still have enough flotation. I guarantee if You never sink the boat it won't matter :D

Yah, I'm not so worried about cracks forming. I used all the heavy gauge plastic stuff ya know. Al Gore tells me they will last forever in a landfill. Heck, even if I can get the rig to last half that long I'd be a pretty happy dood:D

I'm gonna hide an empty Tide jug in my garage for the next 10 winters and periodically check on it.

Just shoot me a pm if you see the lid unscrew itself or any soap jug gremlins. I'll be going pour in foam if I hear from ya buddy.

That's a good deal with all that stuff included. Where would you mount the controls?

I don't fish, but for my boat someday I thought i'd be cool to be able to drop/start/steer a kicker from the helm when in the long no wake zones, cut down on the smoke from the big motor that way.

Buy it!

Tim Fives has 'em mounted low underneath his main one for the I/O. It's badass. His has power tilt also which only adds to the badassedness.

Potential kicker for the Islander:

http://saginaw.craigslist.org/boa/2610614021.html

Just talked to the fella and will likely checking it out tomorrow. We talked $ a little. Um, ;)

What do you guys think?

Looks like a good deal,......

Personally I would convert it to a Tiller,....Run a connecting rod between it and the main drive for steering,..and put on of these on for speed control while trolling,...http://www.controllking.com/

I thought it looked like he may have power trim/tilt on that kicker. That's a great setup.

Dave, have you ever tried using your OB as a rudder while running the kicker?

Lets you sit at the helm comfortably, and as long as you aren't navigating a winding river you should be able to steer just fine.

It works great on my SS, and saves a ton on gas while tooling around at idle.:)

Jason, I like that newer Evinrude kicker, but I'd opt for a smoky, noisy 2-stroke.:D

That one might be so quiet and clean you won't be able to tell if it's even running:p

Good luck on the negotiations, vulcan style:cool:

I was kinda thinking to the right of the helm somewhere. Maybe right to my side panel just below the helm maybe. My main controls are actually top mount so those will be right on top of the helm.

If he would ship,it would be mine. You can't beat that price for a remotely controlled 9.9,especially when it comes with everything.

Yah guys, seems like a heck of a deal to me. Like would easily sell for $1200ish in the spring sort of a deal.

Yup, that ^^^^ would be my plan for steering there. For throttle, that may be a better solution ^^^ you have there (expensive though). I'd just need to figure out the T&T.

Yah, the 2S may be noisy and smokey but she is lighter, smaller and easier to fix (cheaper), all big advantages. I haven't seen may 9.9 hp 4S in person but the ones I have look about the size of 25 hp 2S. I think this kicker is going to weigh around 70# maybe. That is kind of a pain. We'll see.

Good luck on the negotiations, vulcan style:cool:

You know how I roll;)

Hopefully it'll still be there (he already had a few calls) and he can work with my bottom feeder price point.

My 9.9 2 stroke Johnson weighs 79 pounds. I bet that 4 stroke is close to 100.
