Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Ok! I can't take it anymore!!! I just read every post on this thread and it took me 3 days so now I'm committed...I grew up fishing in a 22 foot center counsole starcraft so I feel I can still talk to you guys (I own a 24 foot thompson now). You have done an awesome job. My dad and I cleaned up (isn't fair to say restored in your presence) a 1972 holiday and I spent many summers on lake Michigan. Here are a few things to think about...
1. I run two batteries because you will be using them a lot. Mine are on the right side of the engine. I have a cover that comes straight down from the back and you don't see them and they are in trays. On the left will be (or has been on all the boats I have been on) your trim pump for your lower unit.
2. I use a cooler and don't have a drain since you will lift it out of the boat to clean your fish. Hopefully, you need help lifting it.
3. If you are exclusively trolling for salmon you shouldn't need a kicker or trolling motor. They get in the way for salmon. If you are going to split time with walleye then you should. I have a very hard time fishing walleye in my boat because I go to fast. I have buckets and drift socks to get in the neighborhood.
4. Your rod holders will change once you start fishing. I use the ones on the riggers for those rods and then on the sides for dipsey's, lead core and copper lines.
5. You will spend more on fishing stuff than the entire boat!!! It is SO worth it!!!
6. MOST IMPORTANTLY your kids will remember it their entire lives as I have done.

Once you are ready to talk fishing let me know!!!

Yup, you are along for the ride now maddie, no backing out now dood!! I hope you know what you signed up for!

1. I run two batteries because you will be using them a lot. Mine are on the right side of the engine. I have a cover that comes straight down from the back and you don't see them and they are in trays. Yah, I'll have two batts. One starting one deep cycle. They will be housed in the seat boxes at midship. I can't put them at the stern on the deck as they will stick out onto the main deck. The only way I can get them at the stern is to mount them on the transom about 2/3 of the way up. I'd really rather not do that. Yup, my plan is to have the trim pump on the starboard side.

2. I use a cooler and don't have a drain since you will lift it out of the boat to clean your fish. Hopefully, you need help lifting it.
My big honking cooler will be a fish box, housed in the seat box on the port side. I'll have a drain line (already installed) straight to the old bilge drain. Way convenient!

Yah, I'll be in both big lakes, Huron and Michigan, salmon and walleye. My main purpose for the kicker would be a back up drive in the case the Merc dies on me. I would really rather run the main, whenever I can, for trolling.

4. Your rod holders will change once you start fishing. I use the ones on the riggers for those rods and then on the sides for dipsey's, lead core and copper lines.
Yah, I am planning to have Bert's tracks which will give me any set up I want for rods. I am having a heck of a time finding bottom feeder deals om em though. I have looked big time, I might have to pay regular price on those:eek:

5. You will spend more on fishing stuff than the entire boat!!! It is SO worth it!!!
Agreed, especially how much I have pinched pennies on the rig so far! Good news? Already have the Big John riggers ready for install! That is a huge chunk out of the way:)

6. MOST IMPORTANTLY your kids will remember it their entire lives as I have done.
I can't wait to get them out on the Islander! Man, we are going to have a great time!:D

Once you are ready to talk fishing let me know!!!
Will do! Thanks for taking the time to hang out and welcome to iboats!!:D

Just don't go cheap on the rod holders! I got some cheapy's for free and luckily the tubes were good and the track was good. I just got rid of the adjustable capability and put them on and off each time. Annoying??? slightly...Cheap...absolutely!!!

This is the direction I am headed...

These are ridiculous expensive. I figure I'll buy one a year for my birthday. I'll be retired before my Islander is fully outfitted. Rats.

OK, these shots are for Charlie...

Like I mentioned, the bunks will be supporting the bulk of the load. They are about 3' longer than what was there originally, now extending to midships...
P1050350.jpg

The bow most roller and bow stop will share the load at the bow...
P1050347.jpg

I like how that bow plate is resting on the roller rather than the keel...
P1050348.jpg

Here are the three middle rollers, basically there to just keep the keel off the trailer cross members and guide it along during launch/land...
P1050349.jpg

Stern most roller will share a little of the load with the bunks...
P1050352.jpg

I debated for quite a while about going with two pair of bunks vs. one pair of bunks and rollers. I am happy with this set up - would have been just as happy with four bunks.

Cheers man!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Well, my kitchen renovation project took most of the day yesterday. No aluminum involved there, just drywall. Drywall is a drag.

I did manage to finish up my new tail light housings/step though.

I started with this...
P1050330.jpg

These came off of the old 4Winns now new Jet trailer. It already had two steps on each fender so a third seemed a waste. Besides, the Islander didn't have any!

So, I chopped of an unnecessary chunk, knocked off all the rust, primed, painted...
P1050341.jpg

Bolted on...
P1050346.jpg

I even ran the sand treatment for traction...
P1050344.jpg

I ordered these LED's from WalMart, should be here in a week or so. Best deal I could find at $50...

I am pretty happy with how those turned out.:)

I have those lights (from BassPro though, probably the same) and they work great. I wired dedicated grounds to them as well as using the trailer as a ground so I don't expect any issues with them for a long time.

I bought a trailer light kit from walmart for $28 for boat trailers that is supposedly waterproof, and each of the 2 lights came with three wires. Hot, neutral, and ground. So naturally it seems manufacturers are going with dedicated ground leads for each light lately.
I bought two extra yellow lights for markers and wired them to the constant power so when i turn my headlights on, the markers come on as well. Altho its a small trailer for 15' max boats and was not required, but they were only 3 bucks each at walmart. I just scotch locked them into the harness. I then used liquid tape to make it weather proof. The self tapping smounting screw on the light provides a ground to the trailer.

Splurging for the LED's, that is kinda what I am hoping for too.

Yah, I grabbed a couple of LED clearance lights as well. She is coming together, slow but sure.

As long as we are on the subject of wrapping up this trailer....

As I was nosing around iboats one day I saw a really cool decal/sticker on a fellas trailer that said "Powered by iboats" with the iboats logo there. I really think I otta have one of those! Like right here...

P1050319-1.jpg

Any of you guys remember seeing one of those? EZ/HA, I'm betting you fellas have seen em, eh? I think we should rustle some of those up for our rig haulers huh?

What do you doods think?:)

jcsercsa has one of those stickers on his bow/stern Glastron resto.

Him and oops have little iboats traditions like that to keep things interesting. They also write names of prominent iboats members who helped out with projects inside their glass hulls so it's documented for posterity.:)

Not sure where to get one of those stickers, iboats does not sell them last I heard.

I'd put one on the boat, this site hasn't helped me out much as far as the trailers go:p:D

Good work on the trailer Jas, you'll be really happy with the LED lights too. After years of fighting to keep incandescent lights going, I went LED two years ago and haven't had a single issue despite constant use in saltwater. :)

Nice trailer work man. I need to do mine soon as it's ridiculous and I have the rollers and everything sitting in a box.

I'm either going to float it for a couple of days at a marina or put it up on tires until I can get the trailer sandblasted.

Thanks guys! Yah, I am glad that this trailer is done first actually so now I can be working on the more interesting stuff from here on. :)

I may need to visit my local sign shop or something to see about getting some made, hmmmm.

For me my friend, this whole Islander project would be but a figment of my imagination if it weren't for all the guys around here. I'd love to give some props to this sight and the guys that make all the magic happen:)

OK, I am still trying to complete one thing on the rig every day, regardless of how small. Just to keep the forward motion.

For the past few days I have been cutting, sanding, dry fitting, and laying down epoxy on big ol backer plates that will basically run the entire underside of the gunwales and stern deck. I'll post up some photos when I get to assembly stage.

Still hunting for just the right vinyl too, more samples on the way.

Cheers!

Hey Jas Your trailer looks awsome, great progress. When I was redoing my 16SS I found and dealt with a company out of Portland Oregan, Perfectfit.com. They have virtually everything for marine upholstry, great prices and customer service.

Yeah I'd be in trouble without this site...take a look at what I did to "The Loon" before I joined iboats and you will see:facepalm:

My trailers' lack of progress has more to do with my prioritization than anything else:D

If we get a run of the "powered by iboats" stickers made custom we might as well add a "Starmada" logo along with it:) (make sure to pay royalties to ozenine;))

I will buy two if we end up getting some made.

So ya found him an OB didja Jas?
I know I mentioned it somewhere on here before but I'll bet NB could make a pretty sweet STARMADA emblem.;)

Well, I think his heart trends towards the OB with his wallet telling him IO. He'll correct me if my assessment is off.:)

Tell ya what if the OB checks out on that rig up there ^^^^^ that would be a super buy!:D

I have noticed he does very well with peer pressure though, so my efforts to get him a big girl have so far been for not.;)

That's a helluva deal, I agree. There are a few issues that I would need to work out in order to pick that thing up this week. Doesn't look like it's feasible for another couple weeks, but I will keep an eye out.

I can't believe it hasn't been sold yet, the photo shows the 140hp running, notice the telltale stream of water.:)

Yah, I saw that too. I figured it to be either a random piece of string to make it in the photo or a potentially great running OB. I do think that would be a really great package for the dough.;):D
