Jason my Amigo, you got it right. My question is why doesn't everyone else? Ok Gentlemen its like this...DETAILS! Take a look a Jas's project or any other boat you envy. Know what they have in common? People take the time to do it right the first time. It may take a while to complete, but when they do...YEE HAWW!
Sorry Jas, had to be said, I like the fenders and can't wait too see more. Are you going with the side trailer bunks?

Maybe I'm slow, but what are you refering to?

DJ, not everyone takes the time to re do the trailer. Nor do they take the time to consider the finer details. I was just commenting on Jas attention to detail and I noticed it, thats all. You are not slow, just have another cup of coffee my friend. Or maybe I have had too many??

Are those fenders load-bearing now? Looks like a nice welding job.

I need to get to work on both my trailers, pinstripes or not:D

Keep up the good work, almost ready to start hoisting V6 engines over there eh? :)

I am slow, but you all knew that already, eh!

I am just doing what I can with the time, tools, budget and knowledge I have available to me (purdy slim in all areas). Good news? You guys are a huge help!

Are you going with the side trailer bunks?
I am still debating two posts with bunks vs. a single post with a non marring roller. I think I am leaning towards the latter at the moment.

Yah, they should have no trouble holding up a big guy from Lansing. Course with your stature I am thinking you can just take a gander in that boat standing flat footed:)

The trailer work is growing old and I am very glad it's coming to a close.

I am really looking forward to getting my hands on the Merc! I think it will be a huge challenge for me but I am excited to tackle it.

Cheers guys!:D

I always say the last 10% is noticed 100% of the time. Definately agree that its attention to the smallest details that pay big dividends. It prolongs a project a bit but increases the pride factor. Nice looking trailer. Can I ask where you ordered your vinyl? I'm still preshopping.

Captive child labor? Gotta love it! Had our vocational school build a log splitter once. Some of those kids are pretty sharp.

Yah, the students need projects and I am happy to provide for them. I just need to pick and choose which ones. Pretty much anything that needs to just be functional, fair game. If it needs to look good to, prolly not so much.

The small things do really slow me down, big time. But, I know once I have this thing ready to go I'll want to run it! Which means I'll be less likely to fix/rebuild all those little things that should get the attention. It's all good!

I am still having samples mailed in trying to find just the right match for my new seats. So, no orders as of yet. I'll post up where I get my stuff for ya when it happens. I am trying to stay in the $10 - $12/yard range for the bottom feeder budget.;)

Jas, I know what you mean Brother. The closer I get to splash the more little things I find that need to be done. Darn it. On a different note, has anyone had probs with photobucket? I have been trying to post pics for a week but the site says its under maintenance.?? Sorry to hi-jack, just wondering.

Good on my end. I use Firefox for everything but for uploading photos to photobucket I use Safari as it seems less temperamental for whatever reason.

For a self proclaimed bottom feeder Jas, you sure go "first class" a lot! Nice progress as always.

I think everyone enjoys a job well done. Your's is a great example of. ;)

Good work on the fenders. Can you lower the bunks and rollers to make loading/unloading easier? The higher the boat the further you have to back down the ramp.Or use a tongue extension, which I don't trust.

Thanks ben! Great point buddy! Actually, nope. She'll go no lower. I kinda sorta set the hull as low as she would go, till the stern most roller wouldn't go any lower and the keel was close (but comfortable) to the cross members. Then, I built my bunk risers to match that height. I am feeling pretty good how she is sitting as I think about the launches I normally use. I think I'll have no trouble at even the most shallow launch that I'd take this rig too.

Thanks for swinging by guys:)

You'll be fine, it doesn't take much water to float these tin hulls. My Holiday's a breeze to launch and retrieve, I'm sure the Islander will be too.

Hey Jas, how do those 12" rollers you have on the trailer line up, when the center rib is bottomed out in the V of the roller do the sides of the roller make any contact with the bottom. Im getting my order together and Im thinking of changing up the wierd center and rear roller my trailer has to some 12"ers like yours, the current setup is 15" across but the rollers are toast.

Hey Jas I've been thinking about my flooring options(instead of working on the boat), and might go with your epoxy+sand and then maybe a snap in carpet over top. I keep going back and forth with it. I think it would be nice to have the ability to go fishing without the carpet, and throw it in when I'm using the boat for fun stuff. How hard was it to get the sand texture on the floor with the sand? How'd it turn out? I'd like to know so if you get a chance could you let me know :). Thanks!

I am pretty happy with how the rollers turned out, but here is my take on em....

For me and my set up they are basically there to just kinda sorta roll the boat on/off at launch/land. The roller sides don't touch the hull at all really. I basically see them as rollers to keep my keel from smashing into the trailer cross members. Once the hull is on the bunks almost 100% of the load is carried by them. The keel is barely touching, or in some cases, not touching those rollers at all. At the bow the keel guard/reinforcement piece deal (on a roller) and bow stop will share the load up there.

The previous set up had too much weight on the keel rollers and...

...caved that keel in. That's no good!

I'll see if I can get ya some better photos of how she is sitting now Charlie.

Easy dood! And ridiculously cheap compared to the alternatives!

Bag of sand = $3 (only needed a little out of it, rest went into the kiddos sand box):)
Epoxy = Already had to epoxy the deck anyway, so, no charge:)

VS.

Durabak = $250ish - $300ish to complete this project:eek:

Next time I am working on the rig I'll shoot some close up photos for ya so you can check it out.

I too have been considering snap in carpet. More on that later.:D

Thanks Jas! I was thinking about it, and since I have the epoxy I might as well add another finish coat with sand, or something along those lines. Just wanted to see how yours turned out before I set it in stone.

If I did the snap in carpet I'd try to do it myself not sure how though. Maybe order some snaps and give it a whack :D .

I would like to see some pics when you can as well Jason if you would please. I was thinking of doing vinyl but am thinking that maybe do like you did. Not sure yet but I am thinking that what you did will be really nice and not hard on the feet either. Like that would matter, don't think it is ever going to get warm enough to not wear any shoes here.
