Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

And back into the 60's for a high after tonight, LOL. Only in Michigan. Can be working on the boat in your speedo one day and winter coat and shorts the next.:D

Whats up with the paint bud? It looks like its soft or something, how long has it been on?

It looks like your hull paint has reached complete cure yet

Yah, I hear ya guys. I wish I could say I shot that paint recently but it's been months. I can see that it came off between the etching primer and the Rusto paint primer. I fear that maybe my prep work (or any number of other issues) may not have been up to par, bummer. Time will tell how well I did painting that hull.

After seeing how huge your trailer jack is now...I feel sillly having asked if it gets the bow high enough:D

You aren't kidding about summer arriving in Michigan, well into the 80s out this way.

Nice work on the trailer, it's looking great.:)

Yah, that jack is purdy big actually. Kinda one of the reasons I didn't swap it out for a shiny new one anyway.

Hey Mike, heads up just in case you swing over to Charlie's place any time it's really warm out. Apparently he works on his rig in a Speedo. Yikes!

I just don't know why these damn things don't seem to want to have paint on 'em.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Rustoleum takes a long time to cure. I painted my trailer in rustoleum in october. It took a couple months to cure fully. If your paint is still soft then i would suggest flipping the boat back over and letting it sit in the sun for a few weeks. I know you had plans on working on her but maybe you can get some work done on the smaller holiday.
The heat of the sun will most certainly cure the paint.

This is the reason why i chose to use petit paint on my boat when i paint it in the next few weeks. After painting my trailer, i do not want to go thru that wait process again.

Yah, I know it takes a loooooonnng time for Rusto to fully cure. I thinned it with Acetone at 50% in hopes of cutting down cure time a bit. May not have mattered.

All the same it might have been a prep/temp issue on my part though. We'll see over time. If that paint peels off in big sheets at least I can say they are cheaper sheets than EZ's.:p;):D

Easypoxy isn't particular expensive jas.

I do hope that wasn't the Petit chris was referring to above though. Of course, I'm still not officially trashing the prodect yet though as it's more likely that I just suck.

Yah, I was just talking trash to ya a little:p

I will say a HUGE advantage of going with Rusto is that when (not if) touch ups are needed (just like that spot there) man is it easy to grab a rattle can and make it look pretty again.:D

I know we all want them to look purty, but they are boats. Sooner or later we are going to beach them or run over something. We have to have something to touch up next winter.;)

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Sigh... touch up. Just got my lil boat back from the mechanic. It was stored outside uncovered for a little over a year now.

Good news is that it's a spectacular lesson on all the ways I did my little restore/repaint "wrong" two years ago, before all my time here on forums. Bad news is I get to do it all over again. I bet no one knows why they say to use exterior grade ply instead of leftover cabinet ply, right? All the ply in my boat has become stacks of loose veneer, including the parts that I thought were properly resin-sealed. The cool trunk-liner texture paint that the NAPA guy swore was weatherproof is now puddles of slush on the deck and crumbly dust that brushes off in the places it didn't get washed away.

Good news is the gorgeous AA cedar that i used will just need a light sand and a good new coat of oil. I highly recommend Daly's Ship n' Shore for exposed wood applications. The amount of protection it provided vs the abuse it received is AWESOME, and if I'd kept it covered, a light overcoat wiped on would have completely left it refreshed and the cedar glowing like new.

I think a sheet of ply, some good quality epoxy instead of el cheapo value store poly, and a wire brush and some paint, a couple days and ready for the water again. Oh, and a new battery. lol. New one I had in there froze and cracked.

Your beast is looking better and better every day Jas! IIRC, you painted the bottom of the hull but not up the sides right? That squishy paint is scary looking, I sure hope it cures up properly for you! your trailer looks great! Should see mine... was made in someone's back yard over 50 years ago, and looks it.

Oh it drys just fine. Everything after that though pretty much sucks. My paint that hasn't yet fallen off outright is very easily scratched and damaged. Other than that it's wonderful paint  I accept partial responsibility for the falling off part. However the fragility of it, well that's on Petit.

Jason, did you say that those seats have sliders on them? I looked in a hurry and did not see if you said that they did, at work and looks like it might be busy today, so faster to ask than try to scan though posts. Thanks bud.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Temps in the 80's? Paint drying? cooling off into the 60's ? You guys sure your in Michigan:confused::) Finally hit 60's here today but cooling back off 30's and 40's by the weekend they say. Still way to cool at night to even think about paint or gluvit here.

It really might pay to get her in the sun and let her bake for a few days jas also letting the trailer cook a while couldn't hurt. I know I always get impatient with paint (and most other things) and rarely wait long enough for anything to fully cure. If your anything like me you may have some semi cured paint on top of some partially cured primer covered with some more paint. I've had this sort of problem with a few winterish projects over the years paint actually seems to get softer on those first few hot days then slowly hardens up. It seems this is common with industrial/ farm and implement paint imagine rustoleum isn't much different. It's probably a good idea not to worry about touching anything up until it has all cured well maybe even wait until later in the summer/fall. I have found that 2 stage automotive paints are a bit more forgiving of not so great temps and painting conditions and thinning the rusto may or may not have helped .I'm certainly no paint guru but do have lots of experience messing things up:eek::):D
In any case boat and trailer are both looking good get some oars for the wife to row and lets go fishing:rolleyes:

Yah I am with ya buddy. I am just hoping that she starts purdy. She'll be a used boat so touch ups, clean ups and fixes to be sure.

or well...ya know...

Man that is a heartbreaker!

Yah, I still have the hull sides and top sides to paint up. I am thinking summer that will happen. I'll be extra diligent in my for the rest.

Thanks yoop! Yah, I think I'll do that little touch up when I paint the rest of the rig this summer. No biggie. Like I mentioned earlier, I'll do my best to do a careful prep job and it will be summer too so that will help.

Cheers guys!!:)

Ok, trailer fenders...

So here they are (were) last fall all finished up...
P1030397.jpg

I really wasn't happy with how high they sat and that they were touching (rattles, rust). I really wanted to lower them and move them farther apart. In order to do that I had my students weld this backer plate on so it could be bolted to the frame.

Before...
P1030328.jpg

After...
P1050277.jpg

So here they are, 8 new holes drilled in (2 each), painted up and bolted on...
P1050318.jpg

P1050319.jpg

I was able to move them lower by about 2" and separate them by about 1".

Ok, lot of work for that little bit but it's all good.

Yes, I made them white rather than gray too. Reason?

Well I am considering a black pin stripe along the trailer there and didn't want it to be too busy with the extra gray color. I know, all this is just dumb trailer stuff. Thanks for tolerating me.

Thanks fanny! Yah, that was really the last difficult piece to complete on the trailer. Just have the lights and guide on's (getting some things fabricated on those) then the decals. Almost ready to check off the trailer.:)

Next step on the Islander is to vinyl up a bunch of pieces in the cabin. I am still waiting on a few vinyl samples to make their way to my mail box before I put the order in.

Yah, totally beautiful today, sunny and 55. Perfect!!!

You are the first person I have ever heard of pimping out their trailer. You could have left them high and got some 20's, maybe with spinners too!!!

Great job on the fenders. You're right, it needed to be done. Is one of those things that's easy enough to ignore, but looks and will work tons better now that you did it right... /slaps self! (I'm getting the lesson through my head, but SOOO far to go!!)

Jason my Amigo, you got it right. My question is why doesn't everyone else? Ok Gentlemen its like this...DETAILS! Take a look a Jas's project or any other boat you envy. Know what they have in common? People take the time to do it right the first time. It may take a while to complete, but when they do...YEE HAWW!
Sorry Jas, had to be said, I like the fenders and can't wait too see more. Are you going with the side trailer bunks?
