Paint Test #3 - Rustoleum and Sand (salted) - INCOMPLETE

So, I rolled a coat of primer first. Then, before it was dry, I grabbed some of that sand and basically threw pinches of it onto the primer. It was sorta like salting a fine piece of meat. Check it out...

I then came back and rolled another coat over top...

Guys, I am kinda pumped about how this is turning out. I think this might just be a winner - but I am giving it an incomplete for now. I'll report back after I lay down a couple more coats over top.

Cheers!

(by the way, all this is on the bottom side of the deck hatch pieces - never to be seen once I install them)

excellent, I like the looks of it. I think if you do that and have some snap in carpet. it would be killer.
as far as snap in carpet. as resourceful as you are I am sure you can find some cheap
carpet samples already bound and just ad snaps to it with cheap snap tool.

besides you dont have to carpet the whole area just certain parts. where the kids are most likely to hand out.
ya know.

just my 2 cents..

Jason? Do you have a link to the build up for option #3 in your color schemes?? The grey/white Chief is the one I mean.. wow.. I like that!! I have a friend that used Durabak the first go-round in his 22' Chief and ended up laying down Nautolex a few years later.. Can't remember why or how the D-bak didn;t hold up, but I would check with others first.. I have only read a few bad reports on Nautolex and I've had no issues laying it down in mine... but haven't tested it yet!! :)

Yah, snap in carpet would be pretty darn nice, especially for the kiddos. The layout would be very simple too. That may just be the way to go!

I don't remember him actually having a rebuild thread for that boat. Jeff has posted photos here and there and from what I am seeing he did an excellent job! Check alpheus' thread, he has a few shots there.

Well, my deck finish material is pretty much down to DuraBak or Rustoleum/sand. Really expensive or really cheap, interesting. We'll see how my test spot comes out in the next couple of days and go from there.

Cheers!:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

So when I cam home from work yesterday I checked the Rusto/sand. Wasn't that impressed. Kinda looked like somebody, well, painted Rusto over sand...
P1040680.jpg

Course it is just a layer of primer anyway...
P1040681.jpg

Here is a shot of the paint tray that I used for that rubber granule material...
P1040683.jpg

I could see that stuff making for good deck finish material if it were laid down thick maybe. Not going down that road myself though.

I also got the topsides primed last night...

This morning I laid down a top coat on the bottom sides...

Here is what the sand texture is now looking like...

I am liking it!

Yesterday I did run my hand across the sand pretty hard to see if anything would come loose. It all stuck which was encouraging, and that was with only one pass of primer over it.

So far so good:)

Hey, it's Friday!

Excellent progress Jas!
You've probably thought about this already but on the carpet idea I've got carpet mats that lay down over the old indoor/outdoor stuff in mine. You know the kind the cleaning businesses bring out to a shop and place at the busy entrances and change out on a schedule? Pretty heavy duty.
I like them cause I just pull them out after fishing, hose them off and hang them over the fence to dry. Here's a link with something similar.

Dang Jas I am impressed, you got a reply from OOPS himself!!! Seriously Dude, I am getting close to the deck finishing myself so you have to make up my mind. I like the sand/paint idea but you stated the rusto/sand was incomplete, then didn't like it, then applied more coats. Uh, ok I am confused??? I like the last pics so is that the final outcome and whats the decision? I am holding on Bro, thanks for the information.

Yup, crossed my mind. You know how I roll budget wise:D I think I can come up with something reasonable.

Thanks boatguy! I don't mind being the genie pig one bit!

Dude, you know this is a metal boat right. I'd hate to see your glasser buds disown ya by talking to the likes of me:eek::eek:

Yah, with just the one coat of primer over top looked pathetic. I'll post up the final test results and photos, hang tight my friend;)

Thanks sprint! And, compared to that DuraBak, the price is right buddy!:D

OK, here are the final results...

Paint Test #3 - Rustoleum and Sand (salted) - PASS

Here are a few shots for you guys (one primer coat and two top coats)...
P1040689.jpg

P1040694.jpg

P1040695.jpg

I am really happy with these results!

Up the way oops mentioned that it may be a little rough on bare feet - here is what I am thinking...

One coat of primer and two top coats I think is aok. I do think one of my kiddos running around and falling on a knee would likely get a scrape. I do think with naked feet it will be just barely rough, not uncomfortable though.

Here is some good news on that though...

If it does happen to be too rough, I can always lay down another coat to just ease it up a little. And, I can keep doing that until I am happy with the texture/consistency. Know what I mean? Once this test spot fully cures I think I'll put some bare feet on it and just do a check. If it is too rough I think I'll "salt" that sand into the final coat of epoxy that I lay down on the deck, then prime/paint. See my thought process here?

More thoughts...

If it gets nasty in a few years, grab a quart of Rustoleum from the local hardware store, $8, roll it, done! Easy as pie! DuraBak, a lot more money and a little more complex buy/ship/recoat.

Durabak = about $300ish give or take:eek::eek:

Rustoleum and sand = $30ish:)

So guys, this here backyard boat builder will be going the Rustoleum/sand route! Application wise, maintenance wise, and budget wise, it just really makes sense for me.

Rock on!
