64000 dollar question is would you do it all over or look for something?

That's a very good question. I see different sides to this answer, the physical, emotional and financial. I enjoyed doing it and would like to do another one some day, especially with the Starmada by my side. I'm guessing I have 5K invested in a brand new boat so it makes sence to restore a boat your going to keep and enjoy. I personally get alot of satisfaction from building things and have quite a bit of that in what I've done here and to see the look of pride on my fathers face and the enjoyment he had taking part in the splash was priceless! At the moment I would have to answer yes, but not for quite a while. The admirals answer would be a flat NO.

I'm with you completely. Your resto is an inspiration. To think in money terms it was only 5K is amazing. To look at it an estimated value of 40K seems reasonable for the beauty and craftsmanship. I really wanted to do the same type of resto to my dearly departed chieftain. The admiral in my home feels the same way as yours. So I bought the Holiday which with about a $500 investment will be ready for some fun on the water by mid July. Then maybe the admiral will warm to the idea of a complete resto as yours did.

Truly an inspiration.

Very nice:) I particularly liked the rear splashwell mod, 'Ive got a 18 center console Sylvan, built on the early 80's Starcraft SS hull with the humungous splashwell at the back, same V4 but a Johnson, to gain even 6 inches would be big running riggers and stuff here on Lake Ontario. After 30 years it's getting tired and time for a restore/mod. Thanks for the detailed views.

Nice work Michael! I've been away from the site for a while and was happy to see your splash when I came back. Great job!

Michael, I just read the entire resto thread. From a guy who's been there I'd like to say nice job. So you have 5k invested, you know your boat inside and out, and to buy something simular new would set you back 30k. Not Bad!!!!

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your contribution to this thread and all the things you've taught me along the way.

This week I switched out the NGK plugs for Champions, installed rod holders and got the motor checked out by a mechanic on the water. The engine runs great! The cam follower bushing was shot so the timing was never right. After fixing that and some fine adjustments we are good to go. Idles at 550rpm in gear and hits 40 mph on gps @5000rpm with just me and 6 gallons of gas on board with a 17 pitch prop. One tip the mechanic gave me on trolling with this type of engine was to trim it up all the way almost until the tilt cylinder kicks in. This makes it run leaner and according to him it will troll all day. I'll be putting that to the test tomorrow when I take the admiral out for the first time.

Next up is a passenger console. I'm thinking of incorporating a removable table top. I'll post up when there is something to show.

Here is some more eye candy, finally a pic of the data plate. I had a local engraver put the serial# on it but it came out like crap so I put a label over it. Thanks again Clay! And the whole thread? Really? That's alot of reading bro.

That was the info I was wating on. Isn't it awesome what we wrestle with that a pro can figure out so quickly? I am glad it was a quick and simple fix. Simply excellent work there.

Re: 1974 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB refit

I've been very busy the last four months rebuilding my garage/shop/man cave/SC hanger etc. and happy to report that it's finally done. The pictures of the inside are a bit outdated as now everything is trimmed out and now I'm in the process of building new work benches and getting organized. It's 32 x 24 with a 16 x 24 room upstairs, wood heat, completely insulated and features an insulated 18' x 7'6" door (plenty of room for boats). So end cap production is back in full swing. Hope I'm forgivin for not being around much lately and missed it.

The water is getting hard around here and the 2 SCs are put to bed for the winter. Had the new Chief out alot till July 4 when I started on the garage and I'm happy to say that the Petit Easypoxy is holding up well. I made a passenger console with a removable table but I didn't even take any pics. Sorry but that will have to wait till spring. This boat with the 90 Rude can really toss a tube around. She is very well balanced with 2 batteries forward and a 23 gallon belly tank, isn't tippy at all. Here are some shots on the water.

Looks great!

Anybody that will refab end caps for the Starmada should get lots of leeway & some slack IMHO!

But the b!tchin' garage~SC hanger helps! :thumb:

Nice new boat house, MP. I could live in there. ;)

What, no imploding garage video! Just hook up a truck and pull 'er down.
