Nah I didn't even look til you mentioned it. Ha! $50 is silly.

Yah, that fat thing has no biz in a boat anyway. It would be a giant pain to try and fit it.

Now, to float in a pool with a lemon aid, different story:D

The boat sleeps in the garage due to this hurricane. We're expecting some pretty good winds later today so she's put to bed. Finally decided on the paint!!! I'm going with the Pettit system. Bought everything yesterday, man that hurt the boat fund pretty bad but I think its worth it in the long term and besides this boat is sort of funding itself so I have no excuse. Going with Black sides and white bottom/top sides. I'm confident the black will look OK because the prep is coming along fine (it feels better than it looks). Its amazing how there is no top coat out there specifically for below the water line that's not antifowling. Stripping and painting the hull will easily be the biggest expense on the entire project unless I splurge on canvas or a real swanky FF. Today I'll do more hand sanding and watch the storm.

I'll post up a pic later but here are the components in a nut shell. Worked out the paint schedule and I will be busy starting Wed night into the long weekend if the weather holds. The only window I'll miss is the second coat of white on the bottom.

Wash with TSP
Prekote (eco friendly sub for alodine)
6455 etching primer
4700 epoxy primer
Easypoxy

I just ordered the Majic hardener and reviewed some threads. I have a question about the recoat times of the Easypoxy. The can says recoat in 16 hours and doesn't say anything about sanding between coats. I assume that sanding isn't needed if you hit the window. Is that correct? The PDS says to hit it with 220 the following day so thats the plan or use course skotch brite.

Mike I sanded between coats, I think you'll find that you need to wait longer than the 16 hours they say. I bought my hardener at Tractor Supply..Valspar was the brand. Without it the Petit paint is like EZ says...worthless. Not sure I'd opt for it again after using the Rusto on the top side. The local Menards had Rusto marine topside paint on their shelves for a third of the price and I have to say it looks as good if not better. Good luck with the painting.

Re: 1974 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB refit

This is the first time I've heard anything negative about Easypoxy but I will follow the directions and hope for the best. The hard part is the 4700 epoxy primer must be top coated in 3-8 hours and I'm conventional spraying 2 colors. I will shoot the white on the bottom first then I have to tape it off and shoot the black on the sides within 8 hours:eek: I can go back later and fix the white under the tape if need be after both are cured. From what I read here the Majic hardner is what to use on this stuff...No?

I needed to use a good epoxy fill primer because I need to fill a bunch of small pitting and I liked what I read about the 4700. At that point I wanted to stay with the same product line. I could top coat with rusto but the pro stuff is supposed to have better gloss retention and last longer. Besides, after spending good money on the base coats it makes sence to go all the way with the same line. Hope this proves out over time.

For those of you who are considering removing your bow cap I have some tips. Mine was clamped in place by the pressure of the rivits so after drilling them out I carefully pryed the edges up with a big screw driver just a bit. Then tapped it with a hammer and a piece of wood little by little on each side to slide it off. No damage at all. Hope this helps.

Easypoxy is the paint that is currently falling off my boat in sheets. That is presumably due to the fact that I didn't prime. However, I was specifically told (heck I think it was even a video on Jamestown Distributor's site) that if my existing paint job was in good physical condition I could just thoroughly scuff it and top coat it without priming. Well apparently not. Unfortunately this is only half the problem. The paint that isn't falling off is very easily damaged. I'm not pleased at all.

I would be willing to not blame the product and chalk it up to me being a sucky painter. However this member had the exact same experience http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=384249&page=2

Priming first and using the hardener may very well solve the issues I experienced.

I had the same problem on my SS. Used a "one part epoxy" from Top Secret Coatings, brushed it on and it came out looking great top coated the sides with 1 coat of rusto that is still nice to this day. The second time out I had it on the water for 3 days and when pulling out I noticed 1/2 of the bottom was almost totally stripped. The other half is still on after 4 years and can't get it off with a pressure washer, its still in awesome shape. I blame myself for not looking into the recoat times. That's a mistake I wont make again! Sorry you had a bad experience like me but others have recommended Pettit highly so I'll give it a shot. By the book!!!

The time clock has started. If the weather cooperates I should have top coats on this weekend. Last night WE did the final sanding, washing and prekote (under lights). Tonight its etch primer. That hardner better show up soon, paid express shipping on the order Monday and its not here yet. Changed my mind on the white and going with mist grey.

This baby is painted! Got 1 coat of each top coat on yesterday and met the window for covering the epoxy primer. All the prep work paid off, gloss black shows all sins but it looks pretty good, even up close. I just found 1 small dent about the size of a golf ball that I don't know what to do with. I could leave it for "character" or fix it, not sure at the moment. I still have at least 1 more top coat to put on and hoping weather cooperates.

Re: 1974 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB refit

Thanks folks. I was able to get all the black sanded and coat #2 on yesterday. 320 grit and scotch brite for about 3 hours really made a big difference. This time I rolled it back into the garage as soon as I was done squirting it and I didn't even take the time to take a pic. That black paint is a wicked bug magnet. Its not a pro job by a long shot but for a green horn working outside with gloss black I'm please with the way its turned out. No runs or sags! Tonight we take the tape off and I hope the fresh mist grey under the green tape was cured enough to stay put but if not I need to put a second coat on it anyway. I put 2 oz of the Majic Catalist Hardener per quart and it set up and hardened very fast, even in 75% humidity.
