If you Pre-Drill and then use some tooth picks and 5-min epoxy to coat the holes and screws you can screw into the deck. For seats, if you Know where they are going prior to installing the deck, I'd advise to put another layer of plywood on the underside of the deck and install stainles T-nuts and then Bolt the seats to the deck using a Marine Caulk to seal the Bolts and holes. This is ONE place where Marine Silicone is acceptable.

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

You can also add a layer of 3/4" ply at the seat base location ON TOP of the deck. PB & glass it to the deck & fasten the seats to this plywood. The deck's glass & the added plywood layer protects the deck from any penetrations.

The rips of plywood running across the beam of the boat in several locations were probably backers below the plywood deck seams between sheets. You should do something similar, but glass the stringers, the cut out notches, & the rips first.

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

Thank you. I wanted to get a lot more done yesterday but I just didn't have the time. I did put in a few hours managed to get the template for the transom drawn. I also had my first real "itch fest" last night. Usually when I done, I immediately take a shower and I didn't do that yesterday. My suit is also getting quite a few holes so I think it's time to replace it.

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

I was looking at US Composites site at the 435 resin. I guess I had not read the fine print before but it look like the hardner is included with the price of the resin so if I buy 5 Gal on 435 for $125 it comes with the necessary hardener. Am I correct?

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

US Comp $ is w/ hardener:
All resin prices include catalyst.
1 Quart= 1oz, 1 Gallon=2oz, 5 Gal=6oz

Some sell it seperate.

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

A 5 gallon bucket of 435 Resin will cost you approx. $185 bucks delivered to Ft. Worth. ($37 per gallon) That covers shipping and HazMat fees. IF you order More than One then they will NOT deliver to your House. You will Have to have it delivered to a Commercial Address.

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

Depends...It takes about 1 gallon of resin to wet out 4 yds of CSM or 1708 fabric. So to do a Transom with PB and Resin you'll use about 2 -3 Gallons of Resin. Prolly about 5-6 gallons to do a 4 stringer 16' boat. Another 5-6 to do the deck. Depends on how much you waste and how much excess you use. Most beginners use to much resin to wet out the glass but that's to be expected. 20 gallons is about right for a 16 foot boat restore for Transom, Stringers and Deck. Ordering it 5 gallons at a time does a couple of things. Ensures that its Fresh and ensures it will be delivered to your house. There's No discount for ordering 20 gallons at a time so no issue there. It IS a hassle to have to wait on supplies when you could be working so you need to plan ahead and get it ordered before you run out and you can run thru 5 gallons of resin in about 2 hours if you're doing large layups. I'd probably order 5 gallons one day and then 2 days later order 5 more so you'd start with 10 gallons. See how it goes and then maybe once the first 5 gallons got used order the next 5. Hope this helps.:D

I, and many others, have it delivered to work. If there's an elevated dock, even better. They ship more then 1 5gal via freight line, so access for a semi is needed.

Hours & pay aren't great, but I can ship to our dock out front easily.:D

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

I was going to make the comment that from what I have read so far and watching different people do layups, it does seem that most people tend to use too much resin. I saw a pro do it using basically a squeegee. He said once it's wetted out, it's done. Too much resin actually makes it weaker.
I made some calls at lunch and I may have source here locally I can get it from. Waiting to hear back from a salesman.

Local source would be good. Just make sure it's FRESH. That is extremely important, especially with the MEKP. Shelf life of 60-90 days especially with Texas Heat. If stored improperly it can go bad very quickly. I'd want some kind of guarantee that if it won't "Kick" properly you can get New stuff or a refund.

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

Well it looks like I have found a local source. It looks like it may be right about the same price as ordering from US Composites, maybe actually a tad higher. But on the upside, I can pick it up on the way home from work and if I have any problems, they're close. Plus, I can get as many as I need.

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

Are they selling it to you in 'factory' containers? If not, you could buy a 5gal w/ lid @HD/Lowes.

Having access to stop on the way home is a HUGE deal. If only to quickly buy another single gallon to finish up, rather then guessing if you need a single gallon or perhaps a bit more to finish when you make an order & have to wait 3-5days for delivery.

Re: 1974 Ebbtide Restoration

I'm re-thinking my fiberglass source. And maybe you guys can chime in and tell me what you think. When I spoke with the salesmen, I asked him about resin types and the difference between marine grade resin. He asked me few questions like do I plan to store my boat in the water and something else that I can't remember. Anyway based on that he suggested I go with the standard resin. I'm still unclear on the difference but I guess the question is does it matter for my application. If it's good enough then I'm ok with it. But with the local source, I'll be paying just about the same price for standard resin I would for Marine resin from US Composites.

The other issue with this that there is a $250 order minimum so I cant stop stop by and pick up 10 yards of 1708.

Anyway, based on that, I'm considering doing what WOG suggested and just ordering 5 gallons at a time from US Composites. What do you guys think?
