10-4 Watermann, I feel the same way, most of the red stuff is around the seams but they dribbled it across the hull in a couple of places. I am also going to remove all I can. What grit sand paper should I use to remove remaining paint and scuff the hull to repaint the hull?

BF, does the West Systems 860 replace the 50/50 vinegar wash just before using an etching primer?

Yes, this would replace the vinegar (acetic acid). Hit it with the phosphoric acid wash (PartA...very similar to Alumaprep 33) and surface conversion (PartB...very similar to Alodine). Follow the instructions to the letter.

I can't personally attest to acetic acid washes...alot of great restorers on here swear by it.

This is good stuff to clean corrosion, neutralize rust and also prep for painting. Dilute for painting prep. Less than $15 a gallon at HD or Lowes.

Klean-Strip?

Phosphoric Prep & Etch is safe to use on aluminum unlike some of the purple bottle stuff. I made that mistake once. It degreased, but it also attacked the aluminum. Here is a link to their safety label. It recommends to avoid prolonged contact with aluminum.

Some more good products to try out. The sandpaper I use for prep is a 220 g with my palm sander.

Hey men, thought I had better check in, the boat is finally upside down and completely stripped. YEE HAA.

While I was stripping the bottom I found a couple of thing:
1) Each riveted on chine on the bottom had about a 1/4" hole drilled in it.
2)All the rivets on the bottom looked to be 5/32" rivets except a few toward the bow that looked to be 3/16" or 1/4". Where I found them on the port side I found them on the starboard side.

My question is this, are both the rivets and the holes in the chines factory or a retrofit? This is what I have to show:

I still have a lot to do on the brake, it will be able to bend up to 4' sheet. Also I plan to build a clamp to allow me to bend box edges. Hope it works like I think, truthfully things do not always work like I planned, hence the phrase "back to the drawing board". Ed

Yes they are most likely factory rivets, Starcraft really didn't take alot of pride in the rivet work.

The holes are weep holes and they are supposed to be there in the chines.

Holes are weep holes to keep water from getting stuck inside the chine, freezing (or causing corrsion) and causing problems. They are also drilled in the keel.

Unless the rivet hole is damaged & oversized, 3/16" diameter shank rivets do most of the work. If the rivet hole needs to be redrilled, 1/4" usually gets it.

Nice job on the stripping, what did you use? That brake is going to be H/D.

Yeah that brake, what are you planning on bending with that monster? 1/2" AR500 plate steel?

Men I have been away a couple of days but I will give an update of progress, We had snow last week so I have not worked on the boat outside but I have worked on the Brake. Here is a little slide show of construction of the sheet metal brake:

Brake Construction Slideshow by Bestmason | Photobucket

Here is the completed Brakezilla:

I used some old brick lintels and other steel and aluminum I had on had. I did not intend to build it so heavy but I did want it to bend up to 48 inch material. Do you think I over built a little ?

Re: 1972 18' Starcraft Restoration

Here are a couple of shapes I cranked out quickly on the brake in some scrap .091 5052 aluminum:

I think Brakezilla will bend everything I need on the 1973 Starcraft SS and I hope I can bend some new dual consoles out of .080 material when the time comes. Now some primer and red paint (its what I have) and I can put the brake construction to bed:sleeping:.

Thanks JB. GA my wife told me I must have been an blood relative to "Tim the tool man arr. arr, arr".

There is one thing missing on the brake. It's manual! Now a power homemade brake would be too cool!
