Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

It Ain't finished yet, it dosen't have any registration stickers on it, She looks good though. Its walleye season now, and they're biting in the Saginaw and Titt rivers on jig head's with minows. The forecast looks like you should be able to get it back on the water this weekend and do some fishing. The ice should break up and be gone with the temps forecasted. I think I'm gonna get my 14' and 6 horse out and hit the Saginaw on Saturday unless I have to work.

Side note: You should get those on there before you take her back out. The DNR don't play around with that stuff Jay, they will give you a ticket if they catch ya.

You noticed that eh? Yah, I totally forgot to put those on until I was going through some paperwork and found em in there, whoops!

Yah, the weather looks just fine for some walleye hunting.

I was planning to mount that same trim (without the rubber and end caps) on the inside, because I noticed the same thing. Seems like it stiffens up the side of the boat quite a bit.
I might just throw a pop rivet into a hole that is already there, (holes from the trim end pieces) and see how it looks. I really wanted to install some bucked rivets to look factory, but I'm starting to get to the point on some things, that I just want to do it however I can just to get it done.

Yah, once mine were painted up, they look just fine really.

WOW I'm way behind on the thread man but congrats on the splash and she looks awesome the before and after pics are amazing great work man:)

Great to see ya yoop!:)

Thanks for shooting the video. The smile your your face is priceless!

Great job!!

I was having fun:D

What did you fill the holes with, after you removed it?

I'll just jump in and say that I filled all the leftover holes in the sides of my hull with solid head pop rivets, installed from the inside. Once painted, you'll hardly notice them from the outside. They do stick out a little on the inside. I was a little concerned about the possibility of gouging a bare leg on them, but we'll see how it goes. I don't think it will be a problem, seemed like the thing to do at the time.

I found a rivet that will work for me.
Shaveable rivets. Best thing is, I had a bag of them in the garage. Bought them at an RV salvage-where I buy all my rivets by the LB.

More info, and picture here. Check it out.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

So today was a good day to move this Jet out of the garage and get me a little elbow room.

I found some leftover poly piping from some plumbing jobs, 1/2 roll of duck tape, and made this structure deal here...

Then I pushed her out to the wood for hibernation.

See you again when the walleye are runnin:)

That cover with those bows under it fit really well.

You checked the oil in the lower unit for water before you pushed it in the woods, Right? I would hate to see you have a prob in the spring.

Good night, lil Jet.

For now anyway - I sorta feel like she'll be back in action quick. Seems like spring will be here quick this year:)

That cover with those bows under it fit really well.

It was a little awkward as it's made for a specific model Tracker boat, but after a little fitting and such it turned out purdy good. 25 bux well spent!:D

On hand and free, just the way I like it!:D

I didn't bother with it as the marine dealer changed it out when I had them check it over. Since then it's been in the water for less than an hour.

Do I totally trust that?

Uh, actually, no not really.

Yah, I'll be changing that LU oil out.;)

---------------------------------------------------

K, reminder to myself, stuff to do to get this ready for the spring run (as I am thinking of it):

  • Registration stickers
  • Safety gear (fire extinguisher, flares...)
  • Touch up paint
  • Snap in carpet
  • Data Plate
  • Interior lights (still not here from the other side of the world)
  • Trailer guide on's
  • Windshield (if I can find one that will fit)

I think that's about it.

How long is the jet? If it is under 16' you don't need the extinguisher or flares...not a bad idea but not necessary.

Yah, it's only 15' but I have an extra extinguisher swiped from one of the disposable glass boats I had, so may as well. Plus, out in the bay, just in case, I'd like to have a pack of flares on hand anyway. Cheers man:)

Don't think we didn't catch that. Ya just had to underline it, didn't ya? I guess it could have been in bold, italics, all CAPS, or brightly colored.......

Lucky for you they are turning out so great that we'll let it slide......... By the way, w/ all those stolen glasser parts, we consider this to be a partially 'glass Starcraft. We also noticed no glass Starcrafts were harmed in the making of this Jet....

Have a good week, and keep on keeping on, progress is progress.

I hope your chest swoll with pride as you looked through the before and after pics as you posted them. Might even of been enough to get ya past any of the shame you might of felt for kicking the Jet out of its nice warm home in the middle of the winter.:D LOL

You done good man, I can't wait to see the Islander all bright and fresh like her little sis.

Thanks for the idea. I am going build a similar structure for my boat.

Sorry I missed the splash. Oh boy that turned out nice. I really like the color scheme and noticed what you did in the back there with the ply and foam separator in the back.

Jason, question for you about the sharkhide, I read through that part but you didnt give many details about what you did. I read Hoss's thread as well. Did you sand the nicks and stone chips first? What did you use for polishing pads?

Okay maybe I missed it, but did you only apply the protectant without polishing?
