Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Thanks a bunch guys! I have really enjoyed this project and am really looking forward to not building it anymore - just fishin, eh!:D

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hey Glen, sorry about that. I thought I had some pretty good details in there.

So here is the scoop...

On my Jet I sanded everything. Started course and gradually worked my way to fine. On the hull, everything was done by hand (sander leaves swirls, no good). The last pass was with a red 3M Metal Sanding Pad. Actually a couple of passes. Going this route gives the hull that "brushed" or "satin" look to it. It was a lot of work!

Now hoss on the other hand polished his hull. I'll not describe the details on that as I completely stink at this method.

Here's the deal...

Both our boats need the protection from the alum oxidizing. That's where the SharkHide comes in. It's not a polish or anything like that, just a protectant.

To apply, grab yourself a soft cloth (cloth baby diaper or similar works best). Soak the cloth in the SH until it's just about to drip sort of. Check this out - it dries pretty fast. So you want to work quickly maintaining that wet edge. It's really easy to wipe on, but again, it dries quick.

I'm sure I left out some details, if you start at about #489 and read on from there I'm sure there is some good stuff mixed in there:)

Jason, I have looked at this thread a thousand times, I don't think I ever posted to it.

You did an AWESOME rebuild. Those before and after pics are incredible. Your maiden voyage was insane but worth it, no doubt.

I really appreciate the Sharkhide work that you show and describe, That is one of the main factors that my boat will be using it.

Thank you

Thanks 64! She was certainly a fun project, but from here on, I am really looking forward to harvesting fresh fish dinners from this Jet!:D

Jas, psst, Jas....

This is faint whisper of your Jetstar calling...

It's cold and lonely out here ... I'm thirsty (give me a little drink of gas).... Take me for a ride... Take me fishing....

I'm all rigged and ready...my battery is charged and ideally placed... Let's roll..

Definitely crossed my mind!!!

Yesterday was super beautiful, sunny and 40ish, very nice!

This morning, blanket of snow here in the middle of Michigan, ha! That's how it goes...

Oh man that is funny! Everything in it is funny. The grey is funny, the plea to be played with is funny then you threw in the ideally placed battery bit and it made me pee I was laughing so much. Good thing I am on the can.

Stopped by to say, Glad you decided to place the batts close cause my local battery cable vendors have a hard time competing with net sites, even with shipping costs...So sorry Grasshoppers...

Now listen to the whispering Jet...

Seems like the Jet may be one of those Trailer Queen rigs! Just too purdy to drag down a brown slush covered road to a partially iced in boat ramp:facepalm: Besides aren't there still icebergs floating around in the much colder, frigid north?

I'll force myself to sit patiently with the rest of the gathering mob, torches at the ready, and wait for the Jet to get brought up from it's winter home, detailed & final prep to be water & fishing ready. Then cheer as it goes screaming by on another 'quick, just had to', early morning trip to the water. Just in case the fish are a bitin', don't leave the tow rig on the ramp running!:D

So many projects to finish on the big boat, two many boats needing attention, so little time for fishing................

Have a good end to the weekend.

I shall give you no more grief about getting the Jet out of hibernation. I'm sure it's not for a lack of wanting too, even w/the weather.............

Oops. Didn't take pictures. Tons of fish just not many big ones. Next three weekends will be rocking!

Can take a picture of the bowl of fillets. No clue how to post a picture with one of these fancy phones. All 15-17" not pic worthy but definitely freezer worthy. First time ever in a boat in February!!!

Hey just read most of your project posts. Awsome job, and I've been thinking about finding the same hull and trying it with a tiller on the back for a fishing rig. These seam like the perfect size for fishing. Just curious about the rounded floor. Would'nt a flat floor be easier to work with or was that not possible. Also, did you have to do a lot of metal work on the upper gunwhales?

Thanks BW!

On the flat deck vs. concave deck...

I thought long and hard on this, short answer is I don't think you can go wrong, either way works just fine, and both have their advantages.

I think for me here's the jest...

To go flat I would have needed 3/4" decking to have the strength needed. The span between the center stringer to the sides is really a long way. I dunno, that just seems kinda heavy to me for such a small boat. Prolly not that big of a deal though.

With the concave floor I could go with 1/4" as when the ply is flexed it's very stiff. Also, the spacing of the ribs is very tight giving great structure/support for the deck. It's very solid and I saved a fair amount of weight.

6, half dozen, one or the other, ya know. The flat deck might have been a little easier to build. The concave is kind of a cool feature. Either way is all good.

On the gunwales, yes, that was a lot of work! The inside trim angle at the bow was easily the most difficult part of this project. The rest of it was pretty straight forward stuff. What I learned is the more angles, bends and rivets I put in those gunwales (all the way around) the stiffer, more solid they became. I did spend a fair amount of time on doing just that and I'm glad I did.

Cheers:)
