Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Great job, buddy... Man, that looked like a cold outing, but worth every second I'm sure. Boat looks really good in those pictures at the dock (she "sits" in the water real nice).

Also, on the cooler seat, I have to say I like it - space is it a premium in any boat - (two birds - one stone). You may, however, want to consider trying to fabricate a backrest like THIS and Wal-Mart sells cooler-top seat cushions for about 40.00.

Again, great job on the boat, but selfishly I'm glad you're moving over to the Islander so I can "cheat off your paper" a little bit on the i/o set-up/install.

Have a great day,
~Patrick

I may have missed this, but how did you attach the step/storage to the bow of the boat?

Yah, it's kinda mixed in there. Check out #463 and on...

Nah man, we are working through this together so get moving on that transom of yours!:D

Congrats! Beautiful job. I'm jealous! I love the black and white paint scheme and raw aluminum transom. Now all you need is a little break in the weather, which of course will never come now that you have a perfectly awesome boat to use :) I suspect that waiting for Spring will be the hardest part at this point. So when does the next project start? LOL. Cheers!

-btw what type of paint did you use on the floor/interior?

Thanks man!

Next project? Ha!

Yah I'll be plenty busy, spring can take it's time...

Rustoleum Pro was my paint of choice on the whole boat. Cheap and always available at the lumber yard.:)

Nice job on the freezing maiden voyage Jason. That took some nuts.

And I like the ghetto seat - I would require a backrest personally, but that's me.

I wanna see a picture with some fishing rods in the rack.

Yah man, just as I was loading up, it was sideways snowing, hard for about 10 minutes. I thought

"Am I really going boating right now? Yes. Yes I am going boating! Maiden voyage baby!!!!"

Seems I stand a lot when I drive a boat, so no matter for me.

Yah, I slid a rod in those holders the other day, why no photo? Sorry bout that dood.

Check back at walleye season, I should have something for ya buddy;)

Jas,
Congrats on one heck of a successful project. Totally functional with well thought out scheme. When spring comes and the fish are biting it'll be a joy to be the captain of that craft.

Here are a couple of before/after shots just for fun...

Hey, if you're not using that windshield, can you stick a stamp on it and mail it to me?

Yuk yuk.

Looks great. That seat's not so bad.

Lake - Yah know the real bummer on that windshield? I actually sent it up to a Starcraft boat builder up in the NE there. FedEx ended up crushing in en route. I'm glad we got it insured but it's kinda sad as it was in really great shape.

Thanks a bunch guys! Yup, I really am looking forward to seeing some fish laying on the deck there;)

Side note, totally forgot to mention I dropped the Minn Kota down yesterday - I think that will be a perfect match for that boat;) Worked awesome:D

Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you and yours Jason, abosolutly great job on the Jet. The only soft water around here is the stuff running off the roof. We are having record high temps right now, if it keeps up maybe I can get the SS wet as well, Ya right this is Canada.
Once again great job.

I see you removed the trim on the sides of the boat....I was going to do the same thing. I think it will make it look much more modern (confirmed as it did with your boat:))
What did you fill the holes with, after you removed it?
I'd really like to add the factory bucked rivets in their place since it's so visible, but I'm afraid to even try since it's so visible....And I have no tools to do it.

Thanks Glen! Yah, I'm glad I got it in the water when I did. When I drove past that section of water yesterday there were huge ice flows all over the place. No way I could have floated it now!

Yah, I really felt that outside trim piece added strength and rigidity to the hull so what I did was added a piece of angle alum on the inside and doubled the rivets - made for a very solid structure (along with a bunch of other stuff I did to the hull). I just used standard pop rivets and I feel like they turned out fine all painted up. Here is a shot of the inside...

That also provided lots o spots for me to attach other stuff (stern bulkhead, controls...).

Thanks bcast - hope to see you on the water this spring buddy!:D

It Ain't finished yet, it dosen't have any registration stickers on it, She looks good though. Its walleye season now, and they're biting in the Saginaw and Titt rivers on jig head's with minows. The forecast looks like you should be able to get it back on the water this weekend and do some fishing. The ice should break up and be gone with the temps forecasted. I think I'm gonna get my 14' and 6 horse out and hit the Saginaw on Saturday unless I have to work.

Side note: You should get those on there before you take her back out. The DNR don't play around with that stuff Jay, they will give you a ticket if they catch ya.

I was planning to mount that same trim (without the rubber and end caps) on the inside, because I noticed the same thing. Seems like it stiffens up the side of the boat quite a bit.
I might just throw a pop rivet into a hole that is already there, (holes from the trim end pieces) and see how it looks. I really wanted to install some bucked rivets to look factory, but I'm starting to get to the point on some things, that I just want to do it however I can just to get it done.
