Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Looking nice, but...

I don't want to stick my nose where it don't belong, however, if you have a 12v outlet behind the wheel, would that mean that you might actually plug something in there that has a cigarette lighter type plug and a curly cable or long cord coming out from it, possibly getting in the way of the wheel???

Just thinking out Loud...

I think it looks great. I love the lay out. It would be cool if you could figure out a way to french in or construct an ipod/phone/GPS unit of some sort that way you could have tunes and/or GPS charts, and speedometer all on the dash. It would be even cooler if you could make it detachable so you could just click it in and out as you like. Either way, it looks great and I'm 99% sure I'm gonna steal your helm design too. LOL. Keep up the great work!

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Dose that mean your interior lights go on and off with the navigation lights???

I'm thinking I wouldn't like that, I don't like having lights on in the boat any longer than needed to find something or do a quick task and than the interior lights get shut off,....

Most of the time if I am night fishing I just use a LED light on the brim of my hat,.....

Neat, clean and practical to my eye. Everything is visible at a glance, looks good.

Thanks lake. Yah, Even though I am going way further than my original "bare bones" plan but still trying to keep it simple and clean:)

Thanks kfa! Yup, check it out...

My plan is to have a removable GPS/FF combo that I can swap over easily to the Islander. Transducer on each boat but just one GPS/FF, $$ saved!;)

Yah, that is a good point. I should switch those separately. I'll prolly want the int lights off most of the time even if my nav lights are on.

Yup, I use Petzl headlamps, they are sweet:cool:

Yah, that is some pretty reasonable thinking.

OK, check it out guys...

3 switches (bilge, nav, int lights) plus the horn on the dash. Then 12V installed on the control mounting plate...

Starts to get just a little crowded with 4 stacked like that though. I could move the horn button elsewhere if need be.

Or even over on the outside of the console, that could work too...

Thanks for chipping in doods!

I think the four up and down looks the most practical,...

Maybe a cup-holder or two under the 12 volt plug an the control panel,...One for a drink and the other to hold the cell phone as it charges as it will need a place to ride,...

A quick tip if your going to be pulling inline boards at night,.....Those little "glow sticks" tapped to the board so you can see them works well,...Also a strip of dot reflective tape makes the boards jump right out at ya at night usually the navigation light is enough to get them to shine back at ya a bit,.....It's fun watching a lit up board take off backwards at night when a fish hit's it!!

+1 to two comments... Keep the 12v plug accessible but out of the way, and make sure to have some sort of compartment right next to it for the cell phones and stuff! Maybe a glove box type thing with the plug inside it and a covered access hole as well?

I wouldn't put anything on the port side of the console... far too easy to bump as you walk by, and harder to limit kids' access to it. Personally, I would have pushed the horn button until I got thrown overboard when i was a kid. Wait, what am I talking about? I've been thrown overboard from my own boat. :D

Good advice fellas, thanks!

OK, here is what I did...

I thought the front side of this console was looking kinda boring so that's where the 12V went...

I like what you guys are thinking up there ^^^. Maybe a cup holder or box or something near by to hold the cell. We'll see what I can do on that idea.

Dash got three switches on the right side and the horn button on the left...

I am cool with the kiddos beepin the horn, all in good fun:) And yah, I have no trouble tossing em overboard if need be:D

Never give up on reserving this right! They need to know who's captain of that vessel!

Personally, I would have hidden the horn button, that would drive me nuts! I like the plain, quiet serenity of a screaming outboard. Moving the 12v was probably a good idea, depends on what you might be using off it. Wish I would have thought of the used ebay stuff on the switches, not that I have that many, a good cheap source of perfectly functional switches. Maybe a future mod if I see something I like.

What do you have for a fuse panel? I went with the buss fuses & when I was having trouble with the bilge pump wiring shorting out, was already wishing I'd gone with the automotive style.

Looking good. And yes, from that angle your control cables make me less sad.

Boatmates makes some great stuff. One could easily get carried away. I have a bunch of their stuff on my boat http://search.overtons.com/?D=boatmates&Nty=1&N=0&Dk=0&Ntt=boatmates Most come with suction cup mounts that can easily be swapped out for a screw.

This one has been very handy mounted on my passenger side console http://www.overtons.com/modperl/pro...ates_Cruisin_Caddy&str=boatmates&merchID=4005

This one is below my control box and always holds my wallet, key, cell etc. http://www.overtons.com/modperl/pro...it_Organizer_white&str=boatmates&merchID=4005

You got it lake! Yah, I'll be tossing them for years to come. Though, the day they are strong enough to chuck me overboard will be totally awesome:D

I actually have yet to grab a fuse panel. Haven't even started looking yet, I better get on that!

Thanks man!

Boatmates makes some great stuff.

Good link there EZ, thanks. I'll need to first decide if I'll actually put in a windshield. Then, I'm thinking I can add a cup holder or two right on top of the console there. We'll see how that shakes out.

Cheers fellas:)

Just a thought,...

But having "stuff" laying in a holder on top of the console make it very easy for that "stuff" to go overboard,..

I'm a fan of trying to keep "stuff" as loow in the boat as possible to avoid the inevitable "opps",.....

Yah, I hear ya. Cup holders will probably come later - after I ride around a little bit!

Till then I still have lots to do:)

Holly cow Jason, I went away for the weekend and you almost have the jet ready to splash. Do you still have soft water there? I think we have enough ice to skate on now.

The motor you got on that critter reminds me of my Evinrude 1997 E50TLEUC.

My cables are tighter than yours (radii), but I don't have problems. Are those Teleflex brand?

Yah, water is still fluid around my parts. Not ready yet though. I do think I can make it happen Turkey weekend though!:)

Yah, I have 18' cables so there is an additional loop under the splashwell. That loop plus the tight S made it pretty hard to shift. Moving those cables around so there are two big loops is aok now.

Cheers guys:)

+1 for the low storage.... you could always hide the one ez has under his controls under the console on the left side. protected from weather, easy to get to and secure.....

why is that you keep throwing out those little safety lines for a later splash date??

the mob could be after your giblets if you miss that splash date......... ;)
