Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Thanks guys!

And no, I didn't pretend like I was driving the boat, spinning the wheel and pulling a U to make a run towards the next fishing hole. Seriously I didn't!

OK, maybe I did a few times:)

Question for you small/mid size OB guys...

I am thinking about the rest of my dash layout there. I am wondering what are the absolute, must have gauges? I know I don't care about fuel (obviously), don't care about speed, don't care about trim (obviously)...

How about Tach? Temp? Volt? Others? Gotta have them or not so much?

Tach. That's about the only must have. That's also about the only one I can figure out how to make work

My 2001 Suzuki 40 4stk only came with a tach, reinforcing EZ's statement there. You may decide to add a couple more for looks or piece of mind. Volt gauge is handy.

Ya yo gotta have a tach, and at least carry a GPS to see if you are propped correctly.

Like the others have said the Tach is a must have,...

I would guess sooner or latter yous will pick up a sonar/gps combo that will take care of speed,....

Cool, tach it is, thanks doods. Did a little shopping, sheesh, those things are pricey:rolleyes:

Yah, I'll grab a FF/GPS combo in due time.

Is there a system check on that motor? Not sure what year you have. The gauge without the tach is substantially less and will pre-test your warnings & functions. I decided to go whole hog and get the tach too, lots more $$$, but worth the extra for its usefulness, I think. I think the non-BRP brands are a lot less too.

I'm with you, I don't need all that other stuff (apologies to those that love theirs!) like speedo, trim gauge etc. etc.

Oh yeah, and I added a 12v accessory outlet to mine, for hand held spot light or whatever else you might want to throw in some trip.

Looking good Jas,

It's kinda hard to tell (I was trying)but did your console end up about where the dash originally was? Mine was a 12' cable when I replaced it and I almost think its too long but that's what was there so I went with it.

Other than a tach, a volt gage is nice to have for the piece of mind that the motor is charging. I don't know about the fancy FF/GPS combos but my cheap FF has that function built in so it was a selling point when I bought it.

Mine is a 1998. Yah, I'm not running the oiler (pre mix) so I'm not so sure of the value of that system check stuff. I'd like to grab a nice tach for el cheapo price ya know.

Like I mentioned up a lil ways, I am going to do my best to keep this bare bones as possible. Less stuff to build, less stuff to break, less stuff to fix. We'll see what I can pull off.

Thanks truck! I think with my 12' it's back a little from original set up. I believe that lake ran a 13 footer on his Jet.

The 12 Volt accessory is nice and easy. You can charge a hand held radio, GPS whatever...By the way it is Halloween and I ate turkey last night that means we should be hearing a SPLASH!!!

I may be talked into the 12 V ***. Maybe not, we'll see on that.

Well, I did have it sitting out in a surprise down pour this weekend as I cleaned out the garage. That count?

Great progress man I like the Yooperized epoxy pouring :)BUT........... I read through 10 pages to catch up and still no splash???:D Seriously the whole package looks great keep at it. I agree with the other guys tach is pretty much a must have other gauges like voltage and temp are nice to have but not necessary in My opinion. I really like the dash and steering wheel.

If you're running pre-mix I'm with ya all the way on the system check; the only thing useful would be the overheat alarm. On mine, as with most cars I've ever owned, I'm still trying to figure out what the nebulous "check engine" warning is supposed to mean. Haven't been able to pin that down anywhere. If I do start having trouble with that oil injection, I'm just going to switch it over to pre-mix rather than try to fix it. That'a a damn expensive system, hope it keeps working.

I did run the 13' steering cable, probably could have gotten away with 12' as I have a lot of excess "waves" in it on its way back to the engine. But using the formula provided by Teleflex, I came up with 13' so that's what I ordered.

I did discover that I don't have the correct steering link after all, but it's close enough. I know ebay has them pretty cheap.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Get that one me and Kev have. Eagle 350.

As a matter of practice, I try to not follow to close to the route of kev.:p

(you got yur ear on kev?)

Sorry yoop, still working on er. I have a ways to go yet too:facepalm: Maybe I'll swing over to your thread and check on your progress:D

You enjoy early bow season buddy?

I know ebay has them pretty cheap.

Yah, I snatched one for 25 bones. Now, if I could grab a tach for the same that would be cool:cool:

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Just dawned on me I'm confused. It was my throttle cable that was a 12'er since I have yet to convert the steering.

Oh yeah the 12v outlet I would definitely add. I didn't when I did the wiring and in my one full day out I miss it already. Even if you don't put it on the dash I'd get atleast one somewhere on the console. Side?Front? The wiring is there anyway seems a no brainer. (from a guy that just admitted to not doing it)

What does the dash need? Light and bilge pump switches. Priority wise, next is a 12 volt outlet - plenty of uses and cheap. Fish finder comes next, you don't need it but it can help catch fish from a fishing boat. EZ's Eagle GPS/FF combo is a nice, affordable choice. Last is a tach. I know I'm in the minority with this, but you haven't built an off-shore racer. This is a putt-putt fishing boat with periodic bursts of speed. You aren't trying to squeeze the last ounce of speed out of her. In this case a tach falls in the farkle category. Add one later, you know a boat is never done.

Most important are the minimum requirements to get wet - legally and safely. In other words - Splash that puppy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah a tach isn't completely necessary but you want to make sure you are propped correctly so as not to be over-revving or lugging the motor.
