Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Damn kids ruin everything :p

And I've got another one coming

Too cool EZ. More is better, too bad we could only have one. Mine is at the age (7-1/2) I can start putting him to work. I'm teaching him to work with hand tools for a reason. He'll be working on my fleet while I'm at work during his summer vacation. My restos should really take off.

Jas don't let a little snow bother you. It's all good bro. I was going to go fishing this morning but mom insisted I take Z-man to the doctors for his wheezing and hacking. Damn kids ruin everything! (The doctor just called, no visit but he wants us to use the dreaded nebulizer for breathing tratments. Oh yea I get to pay for two scripts too.)

Windshields are for sissies.

This set up will keep the snow out of your eyes, keep you warm, and is very fashionable.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Alrighty, so I took a run at the steering set up today.

First up I needed to make the access hole bigger as I'll be running all my rigging through one side of the splashwell. So, I put in a backer block and started drilling trough with the hole saw. The guide bit ended up breaking off about midway through the cut and the hole saw jumped. Couple of good sized gouges in the splashwell and on the transom. Plus, alum scraps all over my new paint work. Shot of the carnage...

Took me a while to carefully get everything cleaned up. Got the well boot installed and I'll need to go back and touch up the paint later...
P1070337.jpg

Then I worked the hole cut in the dash. About midway through that my drill up and caught on fire:facepalm:

(thankfully Ridgid should replace that)

So, grabbed the jig saw to finish the cut. Course that wrecked all the finish work I did...

So I went through and refinished the dash and mounted the steering helm...

Well, I got something done today, but not much:rolleyes:

Oh my, Jas. First Lake with his tow car and snow, Dozer with his leaks and now you are breaking and burning things up. What is going on? Is it time to sacrifice a glasser to the god of Tin?

Ah, no sweat. I'll keep at it. Was just hoping to get a bit further ahead today is all.

I just laid a couple of coats of paint on the console to clean up some prior mistakes.

I think I should have that steering cable all hooked up tomorrow. Maybe a couple of other things checked off too. Though we may have to see what else catches fire.

I killed a drill on a huge hole saw I borrowed from Tim putting in my big multifunction gauge in my dash. My hammer drill was the only thing I had with a big enough chuck. Damn thing was running but not turning. Dead. I am need that damn thing for my basement project!

Hey Jason, I think there right, one of us is going to have to sacrifice a Glasser to the Gods. Nothing but bad luck going around. I have had the same tjing happen with a hole saw, and it always happens when you need a nice neat cut. Well it is looking like your going to win the splash first battle. The jet is looking good and coming along.

Nah guys, I make my own fate. Both the failure, crash and burn (literally) type stuff and the successes. Learn along the way and try to be smarter for the next run, ya know.

Too bad I don't need any boat gear though as choppin a glasser is always a good time:D

I tried to take some photos of that drill burning/smoking/sparking but the camera batts were dead, sorry. You would have got a kick out of it.:)

------------------------------------------------

Lil progress this morning - I actually got the steering cable hooked to both the OB side and the console side. I really want to install that console but I don't quite have all the parts on hand to do the job.

Hey guys, have an awesome Sunday!:D

Thanks man. Trying to have it not look cobbled anyway:)

Nah, I had no idea where the holes needed to go without the actual cable (and templates) in front of me. I am 100% certain I would have cut them wrong as I would have been guessing where they go at that time.

All set now:)

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

OK couple of quick shots...

Steering cable all hooked up to the Johnson (still need to pick up a link arm)...
P1070345.jpg

I really wanted to see that console hooked up so here it is partially installed...
P1070343.jpg

I riveted the top piece of angle alum to the gunwale. In between the console and gunwale I put those rubber washers like I did on the trolling motor. That makes for a solid purchase, a small gap for water a junk to wok it's way through, and no rattles.

Once it's 100% installed I'll get you a shot from under neath so you can see how it worked.

Sorry no "in progress" shots. I was in full on octopus mode with that install.

I am pretty happy with how that is sitting:)

It's looking great, Jas. How was the length on your cable? Do you know which steering link you need?

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Thanks guys!

Yah lake, check it out. The 14' I had on hand was too long. I wanted to get it a little forward from my original plan (11' cable) so I ordered a 12'. Ended up bringing the console back a little further than what I was hoping for. Looks like a 13 footer would have been just right. If memory serves that was actually what you used eh?

No biggie, I'm good with where the console ended up.

Yup, just eBayed a steering link arm so all good there.

A.M. progress...

I mounted the "foot" of that console with ss screws, 5200 and rubber washers under neath to keep it up off the deck and give it a solid hold. You can see just a little gap there so water can do it's thing...
P1070353.jpg

Here is the bow side with the rivets painted to match. I like that better...
P1070355.jpg

Then I cleaned up the dash, applied SharkHide, mounted the bezel and the SS steering wheel I won on eBay many moons ago for the cost of a burger and fries...

So do I, great job Jason, gotta like it when a plan comes together. It looks real sharp with the aluminum dash.
