Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

I really like this boat. Very cool little fishing machine. Great work!

You enjoy the rivets, eh mccraney? They are made of alum;)

Come on over to the other side buddy, the cool aid is fantastic!:D

Thanks man, cheers:)

Wouldn't it have been easier to cut holes in that aluminum for the wheel and gauges before attaching it to the frame? I'm not too worried, you'll make it great one way or another.

This is a very cool lookin boat Jas.

25 degrees on the car thermometer this morning....

Yup, you read my mind bro. Before I install the console I'll cut the hole for steering and install the rotary system. Hook up the cable to the OB then install/mount the console to the gunwale. The cable will ultimately dictate where the console will sit and be mounted. I'd imagine it would be a huge wrestling match nightmare to install the console and then attempt to fit a cable in there. My margin of error would be just about zero going that way.

Yah man, it's been pretty cold/rainy/windy around these parts the past few days. I am running out of reasonable temps to voyage day but I think I have just enough fall left to fit it in:)

By the way...

Question to my OB comrades...

Am I needing a transom saver for my rig? Here are a couple of photos of the set up just cuz...

I know this can be a debated topic but it seems the forums are slowly moving into winter hibernation mode, so what the heck?

It is hard to tell from the photos you really need the boat hooked to you tow vehicle. It all depends if the outboard will hit the ground or not while you are towing your rig. If you can haul it with the outboard down which is the preferred method then you won't need it. If you have to haul it with the engine tilted up then you will want the the transom saver.

Agree with hidef. I have always used one on my 20hp, only because in the down position the skeg is uncomfortably close to the pavement, and I don't want them to get acquainted! Not sure yet about the 50 on the Jet Star.

Cool, thanks for swinging through guys. I have something in mind - I think I'll have one of the shop class students fab something up.

I'll say that I yanked on that OB hard and not a thing moved at the transom. Sure the boat/trailer swung up and down but that transom is a rock:D

When we're all finished, we should have a race! We'd be well matched, but I think you'd have the advantage on weight. You know, the way you cut all those extra pieces off ;).............

Sounds like fun lake! Game on!

Yah, I am doing what I can to keep the weight down and still build solid stuff.

Cheers!

I think, about 30"s of 1"sqaure tubing and about 12"s of 1.5"x 1/8"flat iron with about 1/2 and hour welding, a little bit of black paint , and 8"s of 1.5"x 1/4 "foam tape, you would have a real nice transom saver.

Since replacing mine I've towed it a 4-500 miles with the motor in the up position (have to) the motor doesn't bounce around at all and I've seen no ill effects. However by this time next year (hopefully earlier) when the budget is replenished I'll have a TS for it its just not been high on the list of gitt'er done.

Nice work on the console BTW. Is somewhat utilitarian looking in my eyes but looks good and should blend well with the way your going. Plus it'll be maintenance free. Can you tell I'd of voted for the wood had I weighed in? :p

My 2 cents are with Teamster. Even if there are no clearance issues when the boat is being towed, you'd still be better off to have the transom saver in case you hit any rough pavement. Just a little extra protection for th transom you put all that work into.

Yah, I'll get some of my Ind Tech students working on a transom saver. That should make a good project for them.:)

Got the steering cable and motor well boot ordered yesterday so I should be able to get some rigging done maybe mid/late next week. Got some more work done on the stern bulkhead. I think I pretty well have that set up figured out so I can show you guys what I'm up to soon, eh:)

Have a great weekend:D

Ok, Ok. Now you have two races set-up. With Dozer about getting on the water first and Lake for pinks. Win or lose is ok cause you will have a good lookin' tinnie. Waiting to see the stern work.
