I think on this Boat you should do the Aluminum. This is suppose to be a fishing boat and so up keep should be less with the alum dash. Now on the big boat heck yeah use wood.

I would still think about putting trim on the cut edges,

At least in my world I know I would find away to slice my leg open somehow,....lol,....

Well, unlike Ben, I bleed all the time. Just a part of the daily routine I spose. Good news is I have sanded down those edges so they are pretty non threatening:)

Good work on your rig Jas! :D Just stoping by real quick to let you know. Now get it in the water!!

Where'd you come from boat guy! Missed ya man!:D

Know the easiest way to prevent cuts from your console?
Get a tiller! :p (I had to!!!)

Why didn't I think of that???,.................

lmao,....

Teamster, I know you PayPaled him $5 to post that. No selling on iboats!

Awesome.Love those easy free mods.

Always looks for the freebes my friend;)

Aluminum is the better choice, IMHO. The console is taking shape.

I keep leaning (hard) towards this route fellas. As I type this I'm about 90% sure I'll go with the alum on this. I think it'll look pretty sharp.

Yah Brenn, I think the fir will fit well with the Islander too buddy:)

Wood! Beautiful rich straight grained VG fir! It goes with anything! And it'll add a little touch of beauty to that lil boat that nothing else can.

May i recommend sanding it to 220 or so, and several coats of Daly's SeaFin Ship n' Shore oil on it. The Daly's is almost bomb proof, and will take you 3 minutes to lay on a fresh coat once a year. Leaves a beautiful low-sheen, nonslip surface finish.

Sorry to hear that the cabinets are holding you up... that's what I do for a living. If you were here, we could have that job knocked out in a weekend.

I'd be happy to trade you labor for help on one of my old fiberglass boats!!! :D:D:D

Sorry Ben, I knew you'd be all over that fir but this here will be alum. Hang tight buddy, I'll have some wood on the Islander to get ya back on my team:)

Well, on the cabinets, the carpentry isn't so bad, it's really the painting that takes so long ya know.

Yah, just let me know if you ever need help on those glassers, I'll bring my grinder with a 10 pack of cutting wheels:p

Progress accountability post...

Got some more stuff done on the console and kinda started on the stern bench/casting deck stuff. I'll post up some photos when I get a little further along.

It's Monday, rock on:D

Here's the console so far...

I predrilled for the dash and panel for the backside of the console. You'll also notice I riveted a fat chunk of alum angle to the starboard side in order to mount to the gunwale down the line...

Getting there:)

It's not beautiful, it's got some bumps and bruises, but it was basically free. I like that.

Sigh... oh, well. Better make at least an extra bit o' wood on the big girl just to make up for your failure here. I guess you'll be making this look super sharp anyway, so I'll drop the subject until we get back to the Islander thread. =)

And the painting... don't you have a snazzy paint gun lying around somewhere? If you use boat tools on house projects, make sure to point it out clearly to your honey. Should make it a little easier next time you drop a bundle on a cool new tool! I forget what our finisher usually uses... I think it's opaque lacquer for our paint grade stuff which would be painful for the uninitiated, but I bet that Rusto you're so fond of would make killer kitchen finish! :D Just about any decent oil base would spray out ok.

I have a secret I've been trying to keep hidden... my fiancee just picked up a third boat for us... and it's ... um... sigh... aluminum. Old monkey ward 12 footer that we can throw in the back of the truck. I understand that they were made by Starcraft. It's cute, but it floats, the lil electric motor purrs perfectly, and it's aluminum. So I made her register it in her name, and refer to it as "her" boat. My boats don't float or run; this one couldn't possibly be mine!

Looks great.I wouldn't worry about minor flaws on a fishing machine.

Yah, I built my cabinets in place so taping/tarping the whole house to spray doesn't sound like very much fun.

Nice score on the little alum;)

Yah, at the moment I am trying to keep it clean and not mess up the paint job. After launch, this boat will be used.:)

This morning I grabbed the console and dropped it in the boat...

I do like the gray/white color scheme. It should look pretty good with a "brushed" alum dash on there, eh.

I used green tape there just to hold it up temporarily. I'll use something a little more substantial when I actually install it.

After that I went to work on the front side panel for that console.

I also spent a little more time on the stern bench/hatch. More on that later.

So an AL dash? Sounds and looks good.

Duct tape is permanent! Too many wasted steps. Float, float, float. :p

I like the grey and white - was thinking I'd go with white seats and and trim in my boat too. Now I REALLY thing I'll do that.

Better keep moving Jas, I think I hear sleigh bells....

Yah, I hear ya. That will pretty much be the scheme in the Islander cockpit too, gray with white seats and vinyl. Should look pretty good (simple, what I like).

Yup, 33 on my truck thermometer this morning. It's going to get a lot colder before it gets any warmer huh?

Man, the mob is getting surly....

Maybe you should just point the garden hose at the boat - at least then you could say it's gotten wet....

LOL...if I remember correctly, the Jet Star got wet when the foot or two of it's snow blanket melted last spring;)

I like the idea of a tin dash, if it turns out as good as the transom it should look great.:)
