Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

i would never consider that....... it must have come from the glasser side of me, it escapes every once in awhile...... glasser on the left shoulder, tinny on the right..... it's hard keepin em both in check ya know......

Careful of anything that glasser side says, those words are like poisen:eek:

Man, the mob is getting surly....

Maybe you should just point the garden hose at the boat - at least then you could say it's gotten wet....

Yah, I got a few things holding me up at the moment.

I have to sell something for $ so I can score a new steering cable. The kitchen project and the well (ended up being almost $5K) are sapping all my cheddar.

LOL...if I remember correctly, the Jet Star got wet when the foot or two of it's snow blanket melted last spring;)

I like the idea of a tin dash, if it turns out as good as the transom it should look great.

I should have that dash chopped out by tomorrow hopefully

It's supposed to get down to 26 here tonight . I prefer the warmer weather :D

This is my favorite time of the year, fall colors, 55 deg, the best:) I'll take it:D

This morning, finished up paint on the back dash of the console. Also worked some more on the stern bench/hatch.

Just so you guys know that I'm not slakkin here...

You sir are a sick, sick man...........

:D

No pics no progress :D

Bummer neither one of those steering cables work, even bigger bummer on the 5k well

Yah, the cable that you sent me is just about a foot long after I push the console forward. Close! Rats!

OK, lets see about putting up some photos.

I have been holding out posting up on the stern bench/hatch as I am working through all that still. I think I pretty well have it figured but it's a 50/50 shot that it will be totally kittywampus and I'll scrap the whole thing.

I got the front side panel of the console all set. Here it is just sitting on the console, still need to install it...

I also took a run at the dash this morning. Here it is chopped out of a bigger hunk and in the process of being sanded down...

After a whole lot of work it now has that nice brushed look to it...

The gray, white, alum color scheme looks pretty good I think. It's just sitting on the console there, still have to rivet it on...

Looks nice. You gonna have to order one of those steering systems from lowcostboatingstore?

Yup, I was just eyeballing them...

You guys don't happen to know the difference between...
http://www.lowcostboatingstore.com/TELEFLEX-SS13712-SAFE-T-QUICK-CONNECT-12-FOOT-PACKAGE_p_818.html

and...

http://www.lowcostboatingstore.com/...FOOT-Package-w-FREE-STEERING-WHEEL_p_829.html

Do ya? One any better than the other?

When I was choosing a steering setup, I was overwhelmed by the choices. I don't see any real big difference between the two, they look pretty comparable except they've thrown in a steering wheel with one. That's about a $20-25 wheel, looks just like the one I got. It's an OK wheel, but not the best for finish qualities. I had to carve off a bunch of plastic flashing around the edges to make it comfortable to use.

I think either system will be fine.

Interesting, the Teleflex was never that cheap before. If you don't need a wheel (or don't like that wheel any better than whatever you have laying around) then definitely go for the Teleflex.

Thanks for chipping in lake:)

You spose I should hook up controls before I do that:confused:

Cool, Teleflex, will do. I actually eBayed a nice steering wheel a long time ago for this Jet so I'm all good there;)

just another preface for an excuse not to get her splashed (in the water ie lake and not a hose or snow mind you)....

Like the console and dash. that's what i keep going back and forth on mine about, wood or alum. i like the alum but i would have to go buy some, or make a form and cast one..hmmmm

Jas, the brush look - I likey. I would go with Teleflex since you have a wheel and has the words safe and quick in the product name.

Yah, I scored a big fat 1/4" thick piece of alum that keeps giving and giving. Made for a cool dash there. I still have enough for a couple of interesting items that will likely end up on the Islander too.:)

I like your logic GA;)

OK, got a whole lot of ribbiting done...

You can see the rivets on the starboard side there. I added alum angle under neath/backside for mounting purposes down the road at install.

I'm not so fond of the bare rivets on the bow side panel there so I'll hit the whole deal with another couple of coats of white paint. Besides, I totally mucked up my paint work while punching those rivets in anyway:facepalm:

That console is solid/strong but super light still, cool:)

Spent some time on the stern bench/hatch too.

Getting there!

Hmmm, next weekend. Let's see, thinking out loud here...

I should have my steering cable by then. I should be able to install that which also means I should be able to install the console. I should also be working to complete the stern bench/hatch too. So, maiden voyage next weekend? Nah, not so much. Little soon for that yet - getting closer though:)

Looks nice.

Thanks man! Sorry about all the finger prints on the dash there. I still need to do a final cleaning and SharkHide it (after paint).

I really like this boat. Very cool little fishing machine. Great work!

Wouldn't it have been easier to cut holes in that aluminum for the wheel and gauges before attaching it to the frame? I'm not too worried, you'll make it great one way or another.

This is a very cool lookin boat Jas.

25 degrees on the car thermometer this morning....
