On the console.Did you roll the inside edges where your legs and feet will be?I would to cut down on injury. You could add some U channel or angle to the edge.Make sure to keep the aluminum edges inside the U channel or angle.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Thanks for posting up and weighing in guys! Man, I am confused now. I was fully planning to use fir, then ez comes in with the "no wood" comment and now I am actually thinking the alum would look super cool on there. You guys are all about going the fir route, heck WOG even makes up a song! I am going to have to sleep on this one:facepalm:

Actually, I was planning on doing one of two things.

1. Making one more small bend to all the inside edges for extra strength and so I don't cut my legs all to pieces.

or

2. Pick up some of that rubber gasket material stuff to run all along the inside edges so I don't hack up my legs. Should give a nice finished look to the console too.

One or the other should work fine. Thanks for keeping tabs on me Ben!

Sounds like a good plan.I didn't see anything mentioned so I thought I'd bring it up.

jas, would a bowl shaped floor require any floor drains?

you are really showin off your craftsmanship with this boat, and its very educational as well as entertaining

I have been doing cleanup of basement and garage from my two rehabilitations, but trying to lock in on a nice 14' Star
plain tinnie and Galv trailer for $200

I appreciate ya making sure I don't bleed out unnecessarily Ben, thanks:)

I can't seem to find that gasket stuff on iboats. Anybody out there know what is that stuff is called or where I can get it?

Thanks starman, just enjoying the project:)

I do believe that everything will end up draining to the aft, into the bilge and then overboard. I think. Course I wont know for certain until she in on the water and I run er. IF water does end up collecting at the bow side I did plan to add one after the fact. I kinda wanted to avoid it if I could. If I can't, it's all good.

Since I decided to move the console just a hair forward I thought I'd try those two steering systems I had on hand. Nope, still too long. Rats! I think I have held off as long as I can, time to buy a new one.

I think the finished wood would really dress up the boat nicely. Function is nice but after all this work it'd be nice to show off a little with touches of wood.

For Mitch Miller WOG -:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

Jas on the gasket stuff - vinyl door edge guards from an auto part store might work.

I vote for the fir too. I think it will look great. I love the progress and I'm gonna steal your helm design too ;) Can't wait to see all the odds and ends and bit and pieces being put together. This is the fun part. Cheers!

I'm not a fan of wood on anything under 25'. However I'm sure whatever you did with it would be cool.

J.C. Whitney would have any gasket/weatherstrip/channel you could think of.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Thanks guys! Well it's morning and I am as undecided as I was yesterday on the wood vs. alum pieces. Looks like you guys are all about using the fir - I keep thinking the alum would look pretty darn cool riveted in up there on the helm. Ugh.

Thanks for the lead on the trim ez. After a little online shopping seems like the common name for that stuff is "flex trim".

Have a great Sunday fellas:)

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

This morning the deck was dry enough to walk on. I pulled the shoes off and walked around a bit in the bare feet. Nice, I like it - easy on the feet, little bit of traction. Here is a close up for ya...

OK, so I started eyeballin the console and decided to make a return bend rather than go with the trim. I am glad I did it turned out really well. Check it out.
I clamped in a scrap piece of ply under the edge. You can see here there is just a little bit of curvature to it, cool...

I ran the hand bender first then used a big C clamp to press the alum down and around the scrap ply. I would have used a fat rubber mallet to just bang it flat as there would have been easier/faster but it's to early in the a.m. for that sort of racket.

The edge ended up being sort of rolled/curved which I didn't really intend for but glad it ended up that way. Looks and feels great!

Same thing on the bow side edge...

All those extra bends strengthened up that piece too, bonus.

I took some sand paper to all the edges just in case my ankle finds one of them.

So far so good. I really like how this is turning out!

Aluminum is the better choice, IMHO. The console is taking shape.

I would still think about putting trim on the cut edges,

At least in my world I know I would find away to slice my leg open somehow,....lol,....
