Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Nice work as usual and all kinds of progress to boot.

Are you abandoning the fuel tank in the front in favor of the storage?

Thanks Truck! I actually may be altering my original plan just a bit for fuel tanks/batts. Stay tuned for that part. For that bow storage there: anchor, PFD's, maybe tackle boxes, stuff like that.:)

Dunno Jas, i would have left more of a lip across the bottom to help stop stuff from sliding outta there when you unleash that 50 :D.....i guess a removeable piece of netting will solve that though or do you have something else planned?

Well, my plan was to just flip one of these seat cushions up on it's side to keep stuff from flying out, not sweating it...

But, I wonder if just the nature of the big hole will bug me, maybe? I'll hang on to the piece I cut out of there and I might just end up using that as a hatch cover to have it look a bit more finished, ya know. That would be pretty easy.

My main concern was just walking around, all day long, on hatch covers mounted to the topside, stressing the hinges n stuff. Probably wouldn't have been a big deal but this way I don't have to think about it at all;)

Thanks for checking in on me Mark:)

Morning progress - I ended up getting the two casting deck pieces joined. I'll get you guys some photos later, eh.

Hey, I have a big favor to ask you SS guys. I am starting to think about the build and dimensions of my side console.

I'd be very appreciative if I could get measurements of your console, just for comparison/reference. You know, rough height/width/depth sort of a thing. I'm thinking mine will come out smaller but I want to kinda get a target, ya know.

I be way appreciative:)

Hey Jas, what kind of scribing technique are you using? You should be able to get and exact pattern in about 3-4 tries using cardboard or fiberboard and a school house compass.

Well wood, I may have been exaggerating with a hundred tries. It was much closer to like 92 or 93:rolleyes:

Ah, I had a compass but it was a really cheap one, didn't work very well at all so I chucked it. I mostly used the ol sandwich handlers (hands). I just went slow, trimmed a little at a time to make sure they were a good fit. All is well that ends well;)

Need another opinion???:D Thought so.

I think not putting hatches on the top was the way to go. There's going to be a lot of "real" fish fighting going on up there. Plus, when you actually catch one, I bet your going to be jumping up and down and up and down screaming "I got one, I got one".....Your kids will need to video that for us.

You think we'll ever get there?

If I can get there - YOU CAN GET THERE.

If fact, you're already there. You said a "Starcraft that floats". I seen yer work. It floats. I promise. Put the Minnkota on it and go drop it in the closest lake. Right now. Take pictures.

Go!

Good point PR, good point.

I really think launching this Jet (and the Islander) for the first time will be super cool. PR, you know what I'm talking about:) (as I am looking at that new avatar of yours)

I have owned boats in the past, canoes, kayaks too. All were super fun to take out for the first run. But, rebuilding from the ground up and first float? That will be soooo cool:cool: Sooooo fun:D JUst a different level ya know.

Go!

I can't even imagine what that day will feel like....I dream of passing the Grand Haven pierheads, pointing it north or south, and just going.......

The big splash day after any rebuild is one a fellow will always remember. Hopefully I can get there someday to.

Just a suggestion.I'd put the trolling battery in the bow and semi permanently install a charger or wiring pig tail for a charger. It will make for shorter wire runs to the trolling motor and less voltage drop going to it.You would also be offsetting some of the starting battery and fuel tank weight.

Well, I was originally planning on having the fuel tanks sit up front and batts at the stern, but...

Yup, that is exactly what I was thinking actually. That ^^^ plus...

Two full 6 gal tanks weighs just about the same as two batts, but that is when they are full. Batts always weigh the same though. So, to keep the weight forward, keep the batts up front, eh. Also, those fuel tanks fit perfectly under the splashwell while the batts will house nicely under some sort of seat/bench set up towards the bow side. Going the other way around wouldn't fit nearly as well.

So that is that;)

Thanks for keeping track of me Ben, appreciated!

Just 2 cents worth but I bet you won't need a hatch cover. You wont even notice the hatch once the console and stuff are in it. Looks great, I'm with you, should be a great day when the rebuilds hit the water. I may not even fish if the wife makes some of her fantastic h'ordoeurves(I flunked spelling). If I get my hands fishy it ruins the taste. As usual, great work. Anything worth doing is worth doing 100 times:D

Thanks Rg! Well, that hatch opening is pretty big read on...

This morning I got the two pieces joined, here is how I did it.

I Gorilla Glued the mating faces and went to my aluminum scrap pile for some angle, stainless screws to fasten everything together...

For the bottom edge I gooped on 5200 and fastened some alum angle in order to mount to the deck. You'll notice that I made some relief cuts so the angle could follow the curvature...

Then I dropped it in place for a quick fit...

I really like how big that access is! I can easily reach in and get what I need! Ah, but stuff will surely fall out. So I grabbed the cutout piece and just set it in there...

Yup, that's the ticket. Hatch cover will be going in. You can see my pilot hole there in the cover. I can fill that in easy enough, or just install a latch there.

Pretty happy with how that is all coming together:)
