Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Done? You have me confused with somebody else man!

Progress accountability post...

Deck top and sides are sanded.

Deck bottom and sides have first coat of spar urethane. I have just a dribble of epoxy left and I want to save that for the topsides seams and fasteners.

Nothing special to see so no photos.

It's Friday guys!:D

I like the idea of the concave deck. Saving weight is always a good idea on a boat.

Your bow is gonna have a nice platform too, so you won't even notice the curve much:)

I hope that the curved floor works out for you Jay. I have never really liked fishing in my 12 footer because it doesnt have a floor in it. Everything tends to slide to the center on the aluminum. The tackle boxes and extra stuff gets in the way when you want to move from seat to seat. But with the deck in there it might be ok. Your jet is wider than my little boat so it should be a lot less tippy, and probably dosent have as steep of curve in the hull as mine. I would hate to see you get it all done and not like it.

Now don't get me wrong jay, the cool factor is there for sure:cool:. I want to see you get this thing done before I have to winterize my islander (29* this morning at my place it aint going to be long, unless i can talk my neighbor into putting it in his barn), I would really like to meet you at the bay for the maiden/fishing trip. Now I got to get going, I'm heading back to Traverse City fishing for the weekend. Hope to read that you got a bug up your butt and couldn't sleep and had to finish the boat cause of it:eek:. I'll check in on Sunday night for the good news:D

Oh and tell you wife that Golden Arrow II and the rest of the guys on Iboats said that you need to have the weekend without the "LIST", because we all have waited long enough for a boat that floats. LOL.

Good luck buddy

Mike - can't wait till I can stand up there and cast on some smallmouth:)

GAII - yah, that deck is surprisingly flat so I'm not sweating that so much. I think it will be quite comfortable. As for the list, well, there is one already ready and waiting for me to tackle this weekend. Appreciate that ya got my back though buddy! Enjoy your trip man!

here is an idea for you, take the tractor apart for the hydraulics, put a second deck in that splits in the middle, then use the previous tractor parts to raise and lower the 2nd deck up to a level platform that will hide concave when it is pulled back down......

i know you are mulling it over....:D you could also use it as the landing for the helo as well, dual purpose how can you go wrong????

NO PICTURES????? You have time to post peanut butter on the Islander thread but no progress accountability for the Jet ?????Get the pitchforks guys:D

I picture the floor left open with no seats and Jas on a skateboard casting as he runs up and down the concave sides:)

I think you won't have any problems with the concave deck. If it's like mine the curve is quite minor and shouldn't be to big a deal. You are doing a great job, don't think I can catch up. Cheers!

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Thanks Rg!

So I ended up getting 2 coats of Spar Urethane primed and painted the bottom sides of the deck. Then I joined the three deck pieces. To do that, I actually took the original stringer and chopped it up to fasten the pieces together. I schmeered a nice layer of PL on em and riveted them to the bottom side...

Then I dropped it into the boat and threw some weight on it so it could cure up...

I should be able to fasten that down in the next day or two.

Alrighty:)

Just catching up on these last few pages since I've been away. Lookin' good! Quick progress on that painting, I think the first one I've ever seen done with the cans. And I wouldn't worry about that scratch either, I've put a few dings in mine with tools since I painted it. I have a couple nice scratches right on top of the starboard gunwale that I made lifting my tarp support frame in and out. It really takes a lot of the pressure off once you have that first scratch installed. :)

I like your flotation plan, I think you'll have more than factory doing that way. After it's in, you'll have to let us know about the squeak factor...it drove me crazy so I put the 4-mil plastic sheeting betwen the styro and the wood, now it's r-e-a-l quiet.

Thanks lake! Yah, that paint turned out surprisingly good for the ol rattle can. Looks good, feels good, we'll see about the long term durability on it.

Yah, it's very squeaky right now. We'll see what happens after I fasten the deck in place. I was just a little nervous about laying plastic down with trapping moisture against the deck and all - though I'm certain it would stop any squeaks anyway. And, well, tide jugs were just too stinkin big:)

Just use the creamy PB from the Islander thread. A thin layer on the top of each piece of foam should do the trick! :D :p

TII
LOL:D

Hey Jas maybe I'm missing something but looking at the pics it doesn't seem like those joints line up with a rib? I'm wondering if they do or not and if not did You add some other supports under there or does the foam support that area? Or maybe Your planning to peanut butter and glass the top ?:D

Good call TII - I have no use for the creamy kind anyway;)

Yup, good eye yoop. I had the joints miss the rib on purpose actually. The rivet/alum/PL combo would have the deck sitting kittywampus if it landed on a rib. They are resting (squishing into actually) the pink foam under neath which will keep the deck level. Ya know:)

Those hunks of alum should keep those seams right where they need to be. Well, that is the plan anyway.

Thanks PST! Well, I am hoping before white stuff falls from the sky. I'm actually hoping for quite a bit earlier than that but we'll see.

OK, deck is down!

I decided to go with SS screws all gooped up with 5200. Took a while but it's all fastened down.

P1060940.jpg

P1060941.jpg

I'd say about 95% of the squeaks are gone. Which leaves the 5%:(

Ah well, I'm just going to pretend that they will dissipate over time. The land of make believe isn't such a bad place to be sometimes.

From here I need to do a bunch of sand, fill, feather, repeat to get the seams and screw heads to disappear. I'll need to wait on the 5200 to cure up first before I can do that though.

That boat would be an awesome...TILLER! Looking good. Will your counsel sit alright with the concave deck? Walleye will be hitting the river before long...

Yah, one thing at a time and eventually I should run out of things, eh.

Will your counsel sit alright with the concave deck?

Yah, you can see the original bracket that held the throttle controls there on the Starboard side. Well, my plan is to shift things aft a bit from original and have the console actually sit right about in that spot.
