Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

I'm almost to that stage too. Looking nice and neat! BUT Whats missing in those pics?
Seriously, is that all your putting in? It's only about 50 lbs of displacement.

I think your paint job looks better than mine. My high build epoxy primer has a tendancy to orange peel but I knew that going into it. Good work!

Thanks man!

I'm not going to bother with the math but I'm thinking there is more displacement than 50# worth. Prolly not a ton more.

I'm certain that I already have more displacement in there than what was from the factory...

Plus it's not entirely soaked with water eh:)

Yah, I'll put more in there too, hatches, under the splashwell, under the bow cap, under the gunwales, and anywhere else I can stuff it. Not all that worried. Thanks for lookin out for me man!

WHERE ARE THE NOODLES????? NO SOAP JUGS???? Your not really even Jas are You?? This must all be a dream or hallucination I need to go lay down:D

Gosh, maybe I can stuff something in there. I'll see if I can figure something out for ya buddy. I sure don't want to be the root of your hallucinations!:D

AWWWWW....

You could bend it if you steamed it, but I was kinda thinking you'd cut it into strips.

But yeah, your idea will still be cool.

Yah yur right, I could plane it down and steam/bend it. But, for a deck I think I prefer the painted look anyway. I think I'll lob a few handfuls of sand in there too;)

Heh I didn't say You caused em just that it was possible:) I'm confident You will put plenty of floaty stuff in there and probably a 6,000,000 gpm bilge pump too. I like the concave floor Idea although if You went convex You could fit more noodles and would make for an interesting ride:D Keep at it man.

Convex would give me plenty of room for Tide jugs;)

Yah, till they take a gander at my rebuild threads. They'll quickly figure out I'm a big dope so no sweat there:facepalm:

Yah, glad we got that out of the way. Shoot, didn't even make it 24 hours before I mucked up the paint job:rolleyes:

This morning I decided to move on to deck work rather than paint. I figured plywood coming in and out of the boat along with the necessary tools would scratch up a pretty coat of paint. So, lets get the deck out of the way first, K.

I snapped a few photos, I'll get em up later eh!

Deck!

So so here was my options as I saw them:

1. Flat deck with the center stringer, 3/4" Arauco ply

2. Flat deck with the center stringer and a whole bunch of extra structure added, 1/2" Arauco ply

3. Concave deck, fastened to the ribs, 1/4" Arauco ply

Well as you know, I went with door #3. I like the weight savings in the lighter weight plywood. I like not having to build in a bunch of extra structure. I think the concave deck is kinda cool. I like that the ribs are only 6" and 12" apart, and along with the foam, should make for a solid deck.

So, that was my rational anyway, just so you guys can get the jest of what I am thinking.

Here is what I did so far...

First I numbered each of the ribs. Then I grabbed a scrap piece of Luan (bends nicely over the ribs) and measured.

I cut the plywood to width and dry fit to mark where each of the ribs would fall...

Then a bunch of marking, measuring, curvature, center line all that business...

Then I trimmed up the pieces. The bow most piece got a set of scallops cut in...

Looked great! Then I dry fit of it and realized that I had absolutely no need to cut in scallops for a concave deck:facepalm:

So back up in the shop to cut a new piece...

Then I slid them into the Jet and threw on some weight for a dry fit...

very nice JO... how is walking on a concave surface while fishing gonna work out, seems like it would be harder to get your sea legs that way.....

man i wish i was that far along already....

very cool mang.

Thanks fellas! Should be kinda a cool feature of the rig. I'll have a casting deck up front there with a hatch area for an anchor or what not. Coming together all right anyway.:)

Yah, my hull is really flat for the most part (therefor ribs too). Once I had the weight on there I walked around some and I really think it will be quite comfortable.

Yah buddy, I just read the other day about you having to rebuild your transom. What a bummer!! I don't feel so bad about needing to make another bow deck section.;)

K, short list from here:

1. Join all three deck sections

2. Seal up the deck

3. Install

One foot in front of the other.:)

Great progress Jas I think the concave floor is a good idea will put You lower in the boat and add some safety margin as well as looking cool. Curious to see how You plan to join those panels together (your probably done with the whole list by now:D) Keep at it.
