GA - I'm getting there man. It'll be great to have this piece complete.

Yoop - Just hang tight my pastie eating neighbor to the north. I'm about 2/3 done bro.

Sprint - Yah, got in hot water for hanging out with the rig today but I'm painting so can't stop now. Still working on the list today too though.

RG - Tonight, maybe tomorrow she should be ready.

Cheers guys!

My family loves fresh fish on the grill, maybe next summer, that would be awesome:D

Yah, that wasn't very scary. Maybe next time grab a length of chain and swing it around with that demand. That may help a little;)

OK, hull paint done!

Here is what I did...

First up I taped everything off. Then I had some left over rosin paper from my last hardwood floor job - rand that around and on top to protect the rest of the boat. Then I washed the hull with solvent and then with vinegar and water. After that, I grabbed the etching primer...

Laid down two thin coats, then took a green Scotch Brite pad, gave it a light once over, cleaned the hull with solvent and it looked like this...

After that, two thin coats of Rustoleum Clean Metal Primer...

Time for the topcoat. I don't know why this was so hard for me?? But in the end - BLACK!

I actually made two decisions by going this route. The Islander will surely be BLUE!

I am pumped I have both those decisions behinde me!

Here is what it looks like after 3 coats...

Here is what I used...

Yup, rattle can! I actually already had a bunch of these in my workshop left over from my last utility trailer paint job. It took about 5 and a half cans for the three coats. It took just short of one can, per one pass, per side (these are the big cans). That "High Output Tip" really makes a huge difference. Comes out of the can much stronger/faster.

Then I started pulling the tape. Here is what I used...

I love that Frog Tape! Huge fan, here is why...

Nice clean lines!

You can see in that last photo there just a little glob of adhesive left behind by the tape. I probably had 3 or 4 of these little globs. I resisted trying to pick it off till the paint fully cures. Then I'll go after it.

PIMP! It must be those high output cans that saved you cuz I got nothing but horrible overspray when I did it. I would have thought black would have been a nightmare. Same thing when a guy I know in college painted a car the same way.

Un....believe....able, just totally unbelieveable. How do you get so much done in an aftenoon.

Oh, the paint looks good too!

Big fan of the frog tape myself. Just finished the second coat on the topside of my searay today. Wow alot of work taping it off on my end. Very glad to see your progress. My boats been taped and ready for paint for 2 months, the "honey do list" was very very long. Boat looks good, are you painting the topside white ?

Yah, there is no way I would have attempted that with the standard size can, standard tip. I know it would have came out crappy.

Well, most all of that happened before the sun even came up. The taping and tarping took forever. I think like three hours maybe. The actual painting part went super quick.

Yah, that honey do list is tough to find so early in the morning:)

Yup, you got it. White on the topsides and inside. The deck will be gray.

It's quiet at that time of the day. A fella can get a lot accomplished in the wee hours of the morning. I wonder if I should have been a farmer:confused:

Excellent progress Jas, love the black sides and alloy bottom... :D

Thanks guys! Yah, Jen came out and even said that she liked it! "That looks really cool." Keep in mind, this was the second ugliest boat that she has ever seen in her life.;)

Thanks for swinging through guys!

I'm going to see about getting this back on the trailer this afternoon. I'll pull it out in the sun and take a few shots. I think Michael said something like, "...the black shows all manner of sins." I know it will so we'll see what we see eh!

Fantastic. I bet the wife is not too unhappy after seeing that, the other chores can wait. Love the black against the bare aluminim, really shows off the nice work on the hull. Congratulations!

Nice paint job! I need to find the time to read this whole thread, as a warmup to your Islander thread.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Thanks guys! Yah, it was looking pretty good till.......

Aaaaaaaakkkkkkkk! I'm a bone head!

So I went to set it on the trailer this morning. Scraped the spray rail on the trailer fender on the way down, NOT PAYING ATTENTION! Left about a 2 inch scratch. Rats!

OK, well. I went Rusto, easy fix right. Well that scratch got worse:facepalm:

I just gave it a real light sanding. Ok. Then I gave it a quick wipe with mineral spirits, left streaks:facepalm: OK, fine whatever.

Then just gave a ever so slight dusting of etching primer. Well, it etched right into that black paint there:facepalm::facepalm:

Then I stopped wrecking my boat and walked away. Oh brother, what a complete dope. Carp.

Oh well, it is what it is, and I am who I am, eh?

I'll wait for that mess to fully cure and try again maybe in a few weeks or so.

I'm going to go put myself in time out now.
