Looking good Jas.

I know your going brushed look but could you make a guess as to how far off the first part of the process you would be for going a chrome polish? When I get to mine I've got it in my head that it would look good with the big keel/nose plate chrome polished.

That's awesom Jason, you've turned the corner!

Thanks Michael! Man, I wish I could get just a few hours on the rig so I could get this hull prepped, cleaned up, painted up and flipped so I can move on to the deck/interior. Other things seem to be needing my attention at the moment, rats! Maybe this week I can sneak some time in.

Wow, wheres my shades:cool: that hul is looking good Jason. I guess i will do that to mine when i get that far, just so i have a good surface to start paint with:D

Yah, stripping was a pain but my bottom hull paint was not very good so I am glad I took the time to strip all that off. Paint on the upper hull is all sound (dock rash here and there) so a good sanding should be fine there.

Looking good Jas.

Well, if you are looking for a mirror/chrome look (like hoss' rig) I wouldn't use anything abrasive to take the paint off. Just stripper and a plastic scraper or whatever ya know.

Have a great Sunday guys:)

TruckDrivingFool, a quick google search "how to polish aluminum" hits a wealth of info and youtube vids. It looks pretty easy, and very time consuming, to put a mirror shine on aluminum. Basically, 400 and 800 grit on a random orbit sander, then buff it out with a couple different cloth wheels and compounds. As Jas was saying, take care to not put more scratches than necessary in the metal initially. I'd also check the process on some scrap metal, and watch the thickness of your hull skin very carefully as you're sanding. You guys can't just slap another layer of glass on your silly tin cans when you make a mistake on the hull. =)

You are doing yourself proud, the hoss rig has inspired us all. Great work and I do appreciate your help on mine.
Watching you guys strip paint I am really glad mine is mostly done, huge job.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Thanks Rg! Yah, stripping paint wasn't the most fun I've had on a given day anyway.

It's been tough to find the time lately to work on the Jet but I stole a few minutes this morning.

Final sanding with the red metal sanding sponge on the transom skin...

I also got the port side spray rail/seam/rivets all set...

Not much progress but still forward motion.

Random finding: So I missed a few little spots of paint while stripping, like this...

Lil Goof Off and a shop towel takes it right off...

Easier than dragging out the chemical stripper, gloves, yada yada.

Have a good one fellas!

mmm, shiny. I just noticed that nice thick transom plate for the first time. Somehow I missed that and just looked back to where you made it. Real nice & thick, looks great. That will take years of abuse.

ooh, shiny! I like the brushed metal look, and I like the way it will hide a little bit of wear and tear over the years. Tell me about the overcoat you're puttin on it? (rhinoskin or something like it? not making fun, just don't remember the name!) Is it a clear coat and run the risk of being scratched and peeled like a paint? Regardless, will be worth it having that nice brushed aluminum sheen. Almost like a nice gel coat or something. :) I never learn.

And I like the goof off solution. Simple and fast, and doesn't burn the nose hairs etc like paint strippers. You think it would take failed bedliner paint off fiberglass without raising a dust cloud?

Yah, I am happy with how that plate turned out. No wood to rot out on me eh!

Sharkhide, check it out...

Yah, you really don't need any Sharkhide for a glasser. Pretty much just a big dumpster:p:eek:

Thats not nice You could fill em with dirt and plant flowers in em, cut out the transom flip em upside down and use for a dog house (name your dog itchy), target practice for the Navy, target practice for yourself, lots of uses for glassers:D

Yoop - thanks for setting me straight buddy. I definitely could have been a lil more creative man, my bad:D

Good to see ya Bcast. In from the big lake for lunch eh?:)

Well, I ended up getting a couple steps closer.

I hauled the rig out of the garage, it was nice to work out side for a change.

I got the side hull sanded down, here I'm at about half way...

Both sides sanded down and a quick rinse...

I started with the orbital sander but wasn't happy with it. Ditched it right off and went 220 by hand.

I think I'll probably run one more light pass before it's ready for etch/prime/paint.

Wow, don't think you can get any more straight-forward with a product than that. Hope it exceeds even the advertisement promises. Gonna go after a couple coats? You'll prolly have enough product for the half-hull. I'm still loving that brushed sheen you're getting.

Might wanna watch how much you sand. :D I can't imagine how many pop rivets it would take to fix a hole in that hull. Would look like a little diseased with all those bumps on it. And you can't just take a short afternoon and slap another layer of glass on it and have it look like new.

It all looks great. Are you putting on a short shaft motor?

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Thanks fellas! Yah, here is my goal: Have this entire hull ready to run with Shark Hide and paint work by tomorrow. Very doable.

Rg, check this out....

Every time I hear you guys talking about the whole shaft length deal on your Jets, I panic, run out in the garage, measure my transom, measure my OB shaft length, and then sigh with relief! I have seriously measured dozens of times thinking I must have missed something.

Somehow I ducked the issues that you and Lake are dealing with on that 17" transom. Mine is a 20 incher so all is good with the long shaft. Thank goodness, one less thing I have to do:)

I get the measuring a hundred times thing. From my measuring, I finally concluded (even before I saw in the owners manual that a 19" transom was recommended) that 19" would be right. So that's what I made it, but I still needed to boost it up an inch when mounting. When you mount it, just make sure you leave yourself the ability to raise it if you need to!
