Lookin' good, Jason

Thanks man, glad that part of the project is behind me!

Forgive my ignorance, but does that Sharkhide need maintenance down the road? I'm trying to figure out what to do as far as cleaning up my rubrail channels. I know you stripped the anodize off yours and polished, right? Are you going to coat them witht the Sharkhide or anything else?

Yah Dave, you have it there. My rub rail channels were rough. On both boats. Kinda like a bear used em for chew toys. So really the best route was to sand em right down through the anodizing to make them look good again. As you know, there will be no protection without the anodizing. As I have been working I can see that the alum is very vulnerable to the elements and oxidize quickly. My original plan was to just clean them up as a yearly maintenance but I think this Shark Hide stuff will keep them looking good for much longer. They claim that it should last 2-3 years. I'd say at that point a good cleaning and another coat should about do it, but just speculation for now.

Side note, I didn't actually polish my alum stuff. I started (on my rails and trim) with 120 on the belt sander and then worked my way through the grits to 400 by hand. Then finished with a red metal sanding sponge. Laying down some Shark Hide on the Jet alum rails will be on my short list here.

I'm not so sure this is the best route to go but it's the road I'm heading down anyway:)

I can't believe how much you can manage to get done.....Nice work

Honestly, I could sure use a nap. Man am I wiped:rolleyes:

Thanks fellas!

Yah guys, I've considered the sequence and here is why I decided to flip upright then paint:

1. I am pretty much a one man show and I work on the rig when most sane folks rest. So, if I paint then flip I have to wait around for guys to come over and help me flip. I am slow enough as it is so I don't need any help in that area. And, the Keeper Strap spin would muck up my fresh paint - that is no good.

2. I haven't yet cleaned out the inside hull and I really wanted to have that done before I paint. Filthy wash water all over a fresh paint job didn't appeal to me a whole lot ya know.

3. If I change my mind and want it bow up again after I wash it out, it's an honest 10 minute job to flip it back by myself. And that includes taking 5 minutes to find the Keeper Strap. So ya, not a biggie.

I keep trying but can't see the upside down shark hide pics must be something wrong with My computer ??:)

Yah, it's pretty much that last photo I posted up last night but with a completely invisible layer of Shark Hide. Can you see it yooper?

I know that i have said it before but i'll say it again, if you want/need help hit me up man, i only live about 20 mins from the mall in midland and it would give me something to do. Even if its for a little bit.

ROFLAO. I saw someone do that when I went up to Michigan Tech for a party, must be a yooper thing.

I won't be able to shave in my alum like some of the other guys around here. Ah heck, I don't shave all that often anyway.:D

Started on washing out that hull today, man that thing was dirty. Little better now...

Hope you guys are having a great weekend:)

Man that looks REEEEEL GOOOOD Jason. You and Hoss are selling me big time on the bare aluminum look. In a million years when I get around to the cosmetics on the outside of my hull I think I might have to incorporate this. It's just gorgeous.

Question... out of ignorance, not checking your work... looks like your bunks on the back are perfect, ending just barely shy of the transom, but in the photos I can't tell how far the keel is unsupported between the bunks and the bow stop. Maybe i'm used to seeing a roller there where the trailer frame converges on the tongue for guidance and support on steep ramps, but I can't get a sense of scale from the pics. Would a support there (a few inches back from the bow keel piece, on the main hull keel) help, or is it unnecessary on a set-up your size?

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Thanks doods! Tell ya what, if I were to hit the redo button I wouldn't have gone that route though. That was a lot of work! In my gourde I was thinking that it would be easier/cheaper/faster to strip paint, light sand, Shark Hide. Nope, couldn't have been more wrong on that! I think it looks great but I wasn't going for looks. I was going for cheap/easy/fast!

Yah, do over would have been sand, clean, paint. Ah well, it does look pretty cool I think. I also like that brushed look to it, kinda cool.

Yah the bunks are 8 footers so the hull has plenty of support. It's a super light boat so guiding it on will be cake. I may or may not add a keel roller up front there just to protect the keel from bonking the trailer. After a couple of launch/landings I'll see if it actually needs it.

Have a great Sunday guys:D

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

OK so I really wanted to get the transom installed.

First I drilled a couple of holes in the shelf to help with the whole drainage thing....
P1060771.jpg

On to the drain tubes. I slabbed on 5200 all around inside the drain holes in the transom, outside...
P1060772.jpg

Slobbered some on the tube...
P1060774.jpg

Set the tubes in the transom then pounded the transom in place with a rubber mallet. I sunk some shims in between the transom and splashwell so the tube flange wouldn't catch the splashwell on the way down...

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Looks like your on a roll Jay, keep it up.

Ended up getting some fish yesterday, we went 4/4, one king about 15lb, one coho about 7lb, and two lakers about 7lbs each. I took out my FIL and two of his buddies and they had a good time. I didn't reel up a fish and had a good time, I set lines and drove. They even bought my lunch at Hooter's in Traverse City. I forgot the camera and my phone so no pics to share, but the girls are cute, you'll just have to take my word on that.;) Sorry guys, next time i'll remember.

One of these days soon, you will be out there with your family doing the same thing having a blast.

Good choice on the plastic drain tubes. Wish I had known about them when I bought my brass ones, would have saved me a whole lot of grief. Also good idea to drill acouple holes for drainage in your transom shelf. My 64 doesn't have a shelf, it just sits on top of the 3 knee braces.

Great work jas. I love the look. Is your transom 191/2" like lakelovers?
