Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild
Thanks man, glad that part of the project is behind me!
Forgive my ignorance, but does that Sharkhide need maintenance down the road? I'm trying to figure out what to do as far as cleaning up my rubrail channels. I know you stripped the anodize off yours and polished, right? Are you going to coat them witht the Sharkhide or anything else?
Yah Dave, you have it there. My rub rail channels were rough. On both boats. Kinda like a bear used em for chew toys. So really the best route was to sand em right down through the anodizing to make them look good again. As you know, there will be no protection without the anodizing. As I have been working I can see that the alum is very vulnerable to the elements and oxidize quickly. My original plan was to just clean them up as a yearly maintenance but I think this Shark Hide stuff will keep them looking good for much longer. They claim that it should last 2-3 years. I'd say at that point a good cleaning and another coat should about do it, but just speculation for now.
Side note, I didn't actually polish my alum stuff. I started (on my rails and trim) with 120 on the belt sander and then worked my way through the grits to 400 by hand. Then finished with a red metal sanding sponge. Laying down some Shark Hide on the Jet alum rails will be on my short list here.
I'm not so sure this is the best route to go but it's the road I'm heading down anyway
I can't believe how much you can manage to get done.....Nice work
Honestly, I could sure use a nap. Man am I wiped
Lookin' good. You'll probably wish you'd done your taping while it was still upside down
^Yeah that ^
He's gonna tell us that it was a practice flip to make sure he dosen't mess up his new paint job.
This guy has it all figured out, always ten steps ahead right Jay.
Keep up the good work buddy.
Thanks fellas!
Yah guys, I've considered the sequence and here is why I decided to flip upright then paint:
1. I am pretty much a one man show and I work on the rig when most sane folks rest. So, if I paint then flip I have to wait around for guys to come over and help me flip. I am slow enough as it is so I don't need any help in that area. And, the Keeper Strap spin would muck up my fresh paint - that is no good.
2. I haven't yet cleaned out the inside hull and I really wanted to have that done before I paint. Filthy wash water all over a fresh paint job didn't appeal to me a whole lot ya know.
3. If I change my mind and want it bow up again after I wash it out, it's an honest 10 minute job to flip it back by myself. And that includes taking 5 minutes to find the Keeper Strap. So ya, not a biggie.
I keep trying but can't see the upside down shark hide pics must be something wrong with My computer ??
Yah, it's pretty much that last photo I posted up last night but with a completely invisible layer of Shark Hide. Can you see it yooper?
