Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

I've been up since 10pm last night.....perhaps I just need some sleep.

That's right, nights and days are swapped for you buddy. Yah, I entirely turn into a pumpkin by days end. The mind goes to jello and it's hard for me to get anything noteworthy accomplished.

That stripper should be great. That's what I was looking for when I found the Kleen Strip. I found that in a lot of spots where the original white paint was especially tenacious, I had to really scrub with stripper & the SS brush as a final step. No concern for the shine. I was using a much larger and stiffer brush than you have in your picture. Yup, a power washer wound be great, wouldn't it?

At any rate, looks like it's going pretty well, just takes a lot of elbow grease!

Yah, this stripper in both the blue can and red can pretty much work immediately. Like within a minute it's ready to be scraped off. The number of steps I need to do is kind of a pain. Yur spot on, elbow grease is the name of the game for now anyway.

Looking good, gotta love seeing some bare metal on the hull.:)

Looking great keep at it :)

Thanks fellas. I think if I could run a pressure washer on it I'd likely just make this boat a totally bare setup.

Cheers guys!:)

If you are looking for the mirror type finish you'd need to omit the ss brush and the stripping sponge. Just soft stuff touching the hull there.

Ya know Jason.... I hadnt thought of that when I used my brush. I had always planned on priming/painting back over. I hope it didnt screw things up for you that you had used the brush .. in case you had decided to go with the bare alum?.

Oh no, not at all Jay. I knew all along that I'd be going the "brushed" aluminum route. I just posted that up just in case a fella wanted to go that "mirror/chrome" looking route ya know.

Cheers buddy!:)
So, seeing what I am seeing this morning I have pretty much decided that the bottom hull will be bare alum (with Shark Hide).:)
Did someone call my name?? :) Man I'm gone a couple weeks and you just blaze through the Jet...Looks good Jas. Going faster than Ricky Bobby on that project.

you are really making progress. Seems like doing the tinny is much easier than the glasser. keep up the momentum

OK, nothing special here. Just a progress accountability photo....

Port side bottom hull paint off. That puts me at about 3/4 of the paint stripping complete:)

Still have the very bow section and the transom skin to go.

Good progress. once you get past the halfway mark, doesn't it feel better? I don't know about you but I expect my elbows to be sore for months from stripping and sanding for paint prep. But then I'm an old geezer. :p

Jas, I'm more like the driver that took the bathroom break and sat down for the chicken sandwich. That was the funniest dang post/video!! The trophy for the battle of boat build and wit has your name alone on it Buddy. That was hilarious...I concede.

Just remember you removed 3/4 of the bow and half the splashwell so that should be a time saver :D.

Yah, paint prep is starting to drag a lil, I'll get there though!:)

OOooooo, chicken sandwich sounds good about now, mmmmm......

Shake and Bake Hoss;)

Accountability progress noted Jason...

I imagine that most of you guys probably couldn't give a hoot about my progress but I don't allow myself to even think that.

What I really like to do is to pretend that you guys are hanging around the water cooler talking trash about how slow and dumb I am. Like "That Jason is as slow as molasses in Alaska, he hasn't done squat lately!" "Yah I know, what a doofis." You know stuff like that. Helps keep me on my toes and the rebuild progress in gear, knowwhattamean.:D

Well, just the bottom of the hull and the transom will be bare. The rest will just be a light sanding and go from there. Cool because this paint stripping (sans powerwash method) is for the birds.

OK, this morning I got the rest of the lower bow void of paint...

Transom skin too...

Paint stripping complete! As I worked my way above the water line it definitely got more challenging to get that paint off. Glad that part is behind me:)

OK, short list from here:

1. Light sanding on the upper hull sections to prep for paint.

2. Metal sanding sponge all the bare alum so it has a nice even brushed look to it.

3. She gets a bath.

Cheers guys:D

Hey Jason, when I was stripping the paint on mine I used the stripper and then the power washer for the first layers. It was the best way that I found to do it. Then added more stripper and scrubbed with a scotch brite pad, it was fairly easy in most places. You are doing good as usual buddy.

Thanks Kelly!:)

Yah, I am on well water at my place so a gallon of stripper chemical dumped on the ground didn't sound all that appealing. If I were to do it again I'd just haul it over to my Dad's place and go the wash down method as he is on city water.

I totally agree with you bud, forgot you were on a well. When I had my other place I was on a well as well and there were tons of things that I would not do just because of that.
