Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

When you mount it, just make sure you leave yourself the ability to raise it if you need to!

Yah, I hear ya lake! Kinda my plan of attack was to drill so the OB is as low as it would go which should put the anti ventilation plate right even with the hull. I am fully expecting to bump it up one, maybe two notches to have the best performance.

Thanks man!

My 1971 Jetstar also has the 20" transom and I have my 35 bolted all the way up. She will ventilate a little bit in corners if I try to take them at full throttle with the engine trimmed all the way out but if I trim it in she is fine. I haven't used a GPS to measure the speed but the speedometer reads 34.5 when trimmed out all the way.

Looking good Jay, this weekend should be good for laying down some paint. I'll think about you working on that paint job atleast once, while I'm on the west side salmon fishing on saturday.:p

Progress...

I installed the new granite counter tops, farm sink, disposal, dishwasher, new electrical and plumbed everything up.

That ^^^^ was a ton of work. Which, put me back about one full day on the Jet but my bride is way happy. Like "just grabbed a new alum boat for next to nothing" kind of happy. So all is right in Jas' household:)

That said, while normal human beings were sleeping I spent just short of 4 hours working through the final sanding this morning...

My arms about fell off. I think lake posted up the other day that getting these things spiffed up can drive a man bonkers. Agreed.

So, now the rig needs a through cleaning and she'll be ready for lipstick:D

I also unloaded some gear through clist which gave me enough slush fund for bow propulsion...

That seemed like a pretty fair deal right there. All the TM's I was seeing in that price range were all used gear pretty much. Should be here in a week or two.:)

Nice trolling motor should move the jet along fine. Your really flying along as usual I think You will really enjoy the Jet when it's finished really nice to have a smaller easy to launch boat at times low stress fishin when no time to take a trip with the islander. Great work.

A true bottom feeder would have found a CL deal on a trolling motor. Mine was $75 for an awesome foot controlled bow mount! There's a number of them on my local one. None on yours? Nice motor though. Minn-Kota's I believe have a good rep.

I didn't see the pictures of the countertop, etc. Did they not get loaded correctly ??? :)

Yah, that 50# thrust should move this little Jet around nicely. I do like having options with the big/little boat on a given day, pumped about that:)

Yah I know. A bit out of character for me. All the stuff I saw that was cheap was also beat to death, broken, warn, off name brand or a transom mount. Any bow mount in that thrust range, in good shape, was nearly as much as that new one, many cases more. I hunted for em, trust me on that.

I'm ok buying new on the trolling motor. When this Jet is ready, I just want to run it ya know.:)

Ha! Nice dig! I still have a fair amount of carpentry and a ton of painting to do yet. When I'm finished I'll post up;) It's important to the Jet as this kitchen rebuild was the bribe for me not to be thrown out of the house when I hauled it on the property:eek:

...but my bride is way happy.

I know I like to say "patience is key", but I think that ^^^ is more key than patience.

MinnKota is the good stuff Jas. That motor will outlast you. And 50# is awesome! I think the transom mount on my 14 footer is 42# and it scoots me through wind with no trouble at all. Yer gonna love it.

I'm just not comfortable with having gotten a better deal than you on something. :p

Yah, I agree. A little awkward actually. Maybe you should go pay that fella a couple hundred more bux for your trolling motor so we all feel better, K?

No doubt buddy. She was like a kid at Christmas! She actually got up in the middle of the night - I say, "Where are you going??" Jen says, "Shhhh, I'm going to look at my new countertops. HeHe.:D:D"

It was really fun to see her so happy after what we have been through the past few months.:)

Yah, I had a Minn Kota transom on my 14 footer. It was a solid piece of equipment so I expect this will perform well for me too :)

That bow-mount will be perfect for the Jet, nice score:)

Minn Kota has about as good of brand loyalty as Harley Davidson, for good reason too.

I've never had a problem with any MK products and they take all sorts of abuse.:D

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Yah Mike, the tm was going to either be a Minn Kota or a Motor Guide. I did just miss a MG last week, 70# thrust. I wasn't super pumped about having two 12V deep cycle batts in this little Jet though. This Minn Kota should do well for me:)

OK, I gave her a through cleaning today...

If I can sneak a little work time in early tomorrow morning I wipe her down one last time then Shark Hide;)

Dents add character:) I'll loan you a few if you don't have enough ?:D Looks really good, nice and shiny. I think you should polish up all the rivets on the side hull, bow, and transom shark hide each one, mask em with little dots of tape then paint that should keep You busy for a while and give it a nice battleship kind of look

Weirdos ^^^^

Shark Hide is on, Jet is flipped back (one man Keeper Strap method) and on her new ride...

The Shark Hide went on easy and dries lightning fast. They recommend a final cleaning with lacquer thinner before the application but it left huge streaks (as did acetone) so I cleaned with mineral spirits which worked well.

That is the first time the boat has sat on the trailer since I mounted everything up. Man, fits like a glove. Bunks are just right, pretty happy how all that came together.

Forgive my ignorance, but does that Sharkhide need maintenance down the road? I'm trying to figure out what to do as far as cleaning up my rubrail channels. I know you stripped the anodize off yours and polished, right? Are you going to coat them witht the Sharkhide or anything else?

I can't believe how much you can manage to get done.....Nice work.
