Couldn't you put it upside down on a trailer and take a late night trip to a self serve car wash and use the paint stripper there??

I see lot's of folks do that kind of thing around here,.....

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

It's my lucky day. I'm going to strip the 12 footer, maybe I'll just follow in your footsteps. Ya know Kenny (Hopeshefloats) used a citrus based stripper. I'll check his thread out.

I'm going to put viscuane down and lather the boat up. Scrape it off and bag it up. My sewer drain goes into Lake St. Clair so I need to be careful. The drain is 20' from my house.

Nice work. That paint stripper is some nasty stuff, but it works good. You could always get it soda blasted :D. I know I know, not bottom feeder friendly, but it sure sounds good!

Man Your flying along on this project. I found with some of the thicker gel type strippers that after letting it set a bit and just brushing it with a stiff brush pressure washing was pretty much irrelevant considering the size of the hull it doesn't seem like that type of method would be too difficult just catch the paint flakes in a tarp or some plastic then some more stripper on a scotch bright pad to clean up.

Yah guys, I think I have the paint stripping thing figured. I ran a couple of spot tests this morning and think I can swing it here in the garage.

I'll see what kind of progress I can work through in the next few days.

Wow sorry Jason for your loss. I was fishing all weekend and fell behind. I know what I would name my Islander...

Oops! Jas, just noticed you have a new forum title, and are well beyond 5k posts! I'm a little slow... (I blame my computer. :) )

Congratz, and another thank you... I know you try to be modest, but you're an inspiration to me with your motivation, dedication, and "darn it, I'm gonna get it done no matter the cost as long as it's not expensive" attitude. Even more, thank you for the extensive time you've spent photographing and posting pics, descriptions, thoughts, ideas and the life details that make this interesting and personal. I know I'm one small voice among a great number who've followed every step and are cheering every time.

Ok, enough ego stroking. SPLASH SOMETHING!!!! I saw 1-man inflatable toy rafts are only about 12 bucks. If you decide the Jet Star is too much for this summer and wanna downgrade again...

Thanks TII! Yah, I feel like hull prep is the "hump" on this Jet project. I'll get there man. I kinda figure just about when the leaves start to fall in my neck of the wood she might be in the water.

"darn it, I'm gonna get it done no matter the cost as long as it's not expensive" attitude.

Ha! Yah you got that right ws! Thanks for the kind words man.

OK, so I just kinda picked away at paint stripping this morning for a few minutes to test some things I have been stewing on. So you guys can see what I am seeing...

I am really pretty happy with the way that is turning out there. Yah, I see the big ol dent there, doesn't bother me a bit.

So, seeing what I am seeing this morning I have pretty much decided that the bottom hull will be bare alum (with Shark Hide).:)

I can appreciate all the work your putting into stripping that paint. I think that what your doing is the way to go if you want to leave it bare. Stainless 4" wire cup wheels on an angle grinder works wonders around rivits and you can check my thread for suggestions on strippers but I found kleen strip in the orange can to be one of the best.

That long dent shows character - I have a few in mine that I've grown attached to also.

I also found that the Kleen Strip in the orange can was the fastest. Then I used a wide paint scraper and an SS wire brush, and sometimes wished I had a power washer to speed things up, but overall, that part went pretty quick in the scheme of things. Lacking a power washer I used a garden hose at times.

I don't think that is a dent at all more of a wrinkle and after all she is old just adds a little character:) Nice work man get that thing ready to go and bring it up we'll throw some downriggers on her and run out to the Huron Islands:) nothing like a nice ride in a 15 footer on Superior in October/ November  Bring along some extra tide jugs and I'll bring the beer :D

Thanks for swinging through, chipping in and the encouragement guys, much appreciated.

OK, so here is the paint stripping method I'm working through.

The gear: paint stripper, Nuclear fallout gloves, scraper, small ss wire brush, cheepo chip brushes, paint stripping pad, box of shop towels...
P1060674.jpg

My local Menard's didn't have the orange can stuff but they did have...
P1060675.jpg

Looks good. I may have enough in my leftover blue can to do the whole job though so I may not need it.

Grasshopper checking out the red can stripper^^^.

So first up, paint on the stripper...
P1060678.jpg

Hit the rivets and seams with the wire brush...

Scrape...

Wipe down...

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Paint on more stripper...
P1060682.jpg

Scrub with the paint stripping sponge soaked in solvent...
P1060683.jpg

Wash it and wipe it down...
P1060684.jpg

Two side notes:

If you had a power washer and could spray it down in your driveway, you could cut out a bunch of these steps and it would go waaaayyyy faster.

If you are looking for the mirror type finish you'd need to omit the ss brush and the stripping sponge. Just soft stuff touching the hull there.

So here is where I'm at for now...

About 2/3 left to go.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

That stripper should be great. That's what I was looking for when I found the Kleen Strip. I found that in a lot of spots where the original white paint was especially tenacious, I had to really scrub with stripper & the SS brush as a final step. No concern for the shine. I was using a much larger and stiffer brush than you have in your picture. Yup, a power washer wound be great, wouldn't it?

At any rate, looks like it's going pretty well, just takes a lot of elbow grease!
