Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Jas did I read on one of your threads youre a Bowhunter?

Yah, I didn't go last season as I had some things to tend to.

Truth be told I'm not a very good hunter. My favorite thing to to is take a nap up in my tree stand on those nice cool fall afternoons:)

What time of night did you paint this? Had the bars just closed? I think you didn't change your roller enough!

Nope, gave up the whiskey years ago. That is pure, unadulterated talent!:D

Thank god you don't teach graphic design.

Your 3 year-old did a fine job on the photoshop images

Sorry guys, maybe you missed this statement...

I don't mean to brag, but my photoshop skills rock the party. So lets light this candle...

In any event, yes, my graphic design skills quite impressive. Shoot me a pm if you are needing some contract work set up.;)

Being a smaller rig with low sides I would want to be conspicuous, if it's anything like the Grand then bass boats will be ripping thru at 50-60mph routinely.

Holy smokes, the Grand isn't that big of a river! Man, that would scare the peanut butter out of me! If there are boats racing by me that fast I'll just go somewhere else.

Yah, mainly on the Tittabawassee, and Saginaw rivers around here. Inland lakes, chasing steelhead up north, the Bay stuff like that, so yah, I think I'd be ok for the most part.

Strip the bottom and leave it bare. All the cool kids are doing that.

Agree 100% on that one.

OK, yah maybe. But, if I were to do that there would be a 4th option and it would look like this though...
P1050089-4.jpg

Hoss is one of the cool kids and his rig is sweet with that white/alum combo.

My issue going that route would be that I'd need to haul the boat elsewhere to strip the paint off. I have no interest in dumping a couple of gallons of stripper over where I draw my water. My noodle is toast at this point but there is still hope for my children in spite of where they got their DNA.

Or, a giant tarp would do as well.

Hmmmmmm, I dunno.

Why do I have such trouble with these paint schemes:confused:

I was driving through town the other day and saw an absolutely beautiful black islander. Hadn't really thought much about your Idea of a black one until then but it can work. Wish I had My camera with me guy would have thought I was nuts but not the first time.:)

Everyone does the bottom one color and top another maybe you could be different and split it front to back ? Or if You want black and white how about cow spots ?:D

Mike is using CitiStrip. I don't think that will kill your family. "Citi" in this case stands for "citrus" not citrachloromine acitatenoid which, as you know, causes limbs to fall off.

They say that the Citristrip is biodegradeable, but it does kill grass very quickly so it's not 100% safe. In the event of a spill their literature says to prevent it from entering waterways and sewers so I don't think it's the best thing to have near a well.

I've been using rags and the shopvac to make sure that I don't contaminate the place all to he*&.

As long as you do the same I wouldn't hesitate to use it on your property and it's a good product.:)

Here is a link to their safety PDFs.

I am partial to the bare bottom and color on the top, there was a that i cannot remember who did it but it was red/maroon and woodonglass was giving tips on the painting, roll and roll. Looked sharp to me and different

actually it was lakelover. that's how i plan on doing mine except i will be leaving from the waterline down to the keel bare/natural with a clear protection coat and see how that lasts.

It's pretty hard to believe, but they have bass tourneys west of the cooling towers in Lansing and boats run clear down to Dimondale.

Not a great bass fishing location so it puzzles me to no end. The winning bag last time I checked was around 6lbs. They were reluctant to tell me when I inquired at their weigh-in one time.:p

There's an overpass that practically nobody slows down for as well, just to keep things interesting:facepalm:

I agree with you, I like my quiet fishing hole since 99% of the time we are the only vessel.;)

My vote is for black with aluminum bottom and white inside.

Well fellas, I'll wrestle with the paint scheme a while longer. I think I should be more decisive with such a thing, I really don't know why I have such a tough time deciding. Oh well, it'll happen. I have quite a ways to go before I have to commit.

Trimmed out nicely Jas, looking good. FWIW the rating plate on mine lists 5 persons or 1090lbs.

And don't let em knock your mad Photoshop skilz I like the blue and white even if its more work.

Did someone say Black and bare like this.
DSC04131.jpg

I know it?s not a Starcraft but you get the colour scheme.
Yea my boat has been sitting on the sidelines this summer.
I?ve had to go out in this thing to catch salmon.
Feeling a little guilty so I gave the old starcraft a good wash today.

Ooooo man, that Duckworth is sweet!!!!

Ah fellas, I really wasn't thinking about stripping paint on this Jet, buuuuuuuuttt, hmmmmmmmm. Yall surely have me thinking. (can you hear the gears grinding?)

OK, take the fork back out. I totally forgot I needed to trim out the bottom side of that inner gunwale. See that little alum trim on the bottom of the original work vs. what I added...
P1060597.jpg

Good news is that I pulled off two super long sections from the Islander that are exact matches...
P1060598.jpg

This was tricky, I had to use the clamps a bunch and really wanted to be an octopus again. I needed like 6 extra arms...
P1060599.jpg

If it wasn't challenging enough I uped it a lil by going with 1/8" rivets under neath, like the original work, so they wouldn't show.

That's looks better...
P1060600.jpg

Cleaned up and shined up I think they should look pretty good...
P1060601.jpg

P1060602.jpg

Still not done yet though. Since I've chopped the splashwell back I have some small ones to install back there too.

Have a great weekend guys!

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Got a few more things done today.

Installed the splashwell with about 1/2 the necessary rivets. Before I got too much farther I then slid the transom in place just to be sure that everyone was working a playing well with one another...
P1060605.jpg

All good.

I was a little nervous my flange bend there would be wavy as I just used that hand bender. Nope, looks like a good mating surface there...
P1060606.jpg

I am pretty happy with how this is all fitting together so far considering I hacked it all up:)

Then I got those last two lower trim pieces cut and installed...

That thing is fitting like a glove, I'm impressed. It will look like a factory splashwell the way you are going.:)
