Jas give these guys a shout

Thanks for the lead buddy!

I thought you fell out of the Jet on the pull start. LOL Shouldn't be too long until the splash. I won't press for a date. But.......... you are closing in.

Nah man, I chopped out the bow and shortened the splashwell. It's like a football field in there now, plenty of room for those sorts of maneuvers;)

Based on My test run Your motor doesn't smoke nearly enough must be something wrong :D

Ha! Yah, there was some there. Smelled goooooooood. Smelled of early mornings at the dock, prepping for launch if ya know what I mean.:)

Don't underestimate the pull start - I guarantee you'll use it once!!

Yah buddy, that's kinda why I wanted to give it a go here in the backyard rather than when it all goes to pot. I sure don't want the first pull start to happen when sandwich and snack pirates from Ohio are bearing down on me.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Alrighty, got a couple things done today.

First up, I finished that portside bow trim piece. Some heat, clamps, rubber mallet, hammer, rivets and...

P1060574.jpg

P1060575.jpg

That was not very easy given the tools I have on hand. It turned out pretty good, not a factory built look mind you, but aok. I am debating painting it up with the rest of the deck color vs. cleaning it up and leaving it bare. Trying to figure out what will mask my garage built job best.

So I took off those side hull rub rails and they won't be going back on. I had to do something with all those holes so I riveted up a piece of aluminum angle.

Outside...

Inside...
P1060577.jpg

That angle alum kinda serves three major purposes. 1) Fills the holes. 2) Gives additional strength/rigidity to the hull. 3) I'll have a bow and stern side bench going in, now I have something to attach them to.

Cheers!:D

Looking good Jas, looking good. Thanks for posting up the video, makes us feel like were right along there getting it going. Nice controls they look like they are smooth and tight. Don?t give up on those control cables yet they may fit even if you have to put an extra loop on the motor end. I just changed some control cables on my uncle?s boat because they were two feet too short. They came from the factory that way and the end by the motor was toast from tilting up and down.

I went back a few pages to see what you started with for the gunnel trim. Better join the Tin Knockers Union and start paying dues. WOW!

Well, my control cables are ok (actually they are VERY long, but ya a loop in those should be ok). It's my steering cable(s) that is actually too long. I'm not so sure that I can get a loop in that and have it still run smooth. I'll give it a go tomorrow and see if I can swing it. That would be cool if I could pull it off. Thanks GLG!

Splashwell Reduction Day

Here it is on the operating table...
P1060578.jpg

Notice the additional black line. That would be my cut line and between the black and blue lines will become my transom mounting flange. The blue line was a little kittywampus so I had to straighten that out.

And the cut...
P1060580.jpg

Lopped off about 1/3 there.

Ran a quick dry fit...
P1060583.jpg

I decided on keeping it this size (and not go smaller) for a few reasons. 1) Still kinda keeps to the original form/lines which I like. 2) I had a pair of holes on each side for the cable pulley system. Now, the very front of the splashwell is now covering the pair of bow side holes that I no longer need. I still need one hole for my controls/steering/batt cables/fuel line, I think I have a plan for the other. 3) Still lots of alum for strength back there. 4) I have plenty of room for two batts and some extra storage under neath.

Then I bent the alum down for the mounting flange. I really wish I had a break but my little hand bender worked ok, I just went slow...
P1060586.jpg

Then I drilled out all the mounting holes and sanded it down. Made all kinds of sense to do it now vs. installed in the boat...
P1060587.jpg

Cool! Glad to have that part wrapped up!:)

Good luck bending that steering cable. I think mine will be OK, but only if I let it "wave" up and down between the transom & helm along the side of the boat. If I had ordered the next foot smaller, it would have been too short I think. Those cables don't like to bend!

Until today, my wife was the only person I'd ever heard use the word "kittywampus".

Nice progress Jason. Looking good.

cool boat, if your having problems measuring your steering cable just run a rope where your cable would go and then measure the rope.

Great thread Jas.Hey quick question, how many do you think you can comfortabley seat in the Jet? you think you can get 3-4 adults? or would that be cutting it? I ask because I wonder if a 15ft or 16ft would work for me.Just curious what your thoughts are with that and looking forward to more on this build.

Means "nonsensical, utter chaos, nonorganized".

Can be used as a verb "He's kittiwampusing all around"

Can be used as an adverb "He ran kittiwampusly around"

Can be used as a noun "There goes the kittiwampus!"

Can be used as an adjective "He kittiwampusly bounced after seeing the transom"

but is not an official word...yet!

Yah, I am about to go give it a shot but I am just about sure it'll bee too tight to steer. Worth a try though.

Thanks man! Yah, I believe I'll do just that. It's kinda fat trim and with the rivets in there, paint should look best I think. Cool paint it is:)

Your wife must be ultra cool:D

I am not much for compromising, kind of an all or nuthin sort of fella. But with that splashwell, I am glad that I only chopped some off. Keeps the lines, keeps the strength, keeps some storage, gains some room in the boat, all good:)

Rope is a good tip. Those two steering cables just kinda happened my way. I really think a 10 or 12 foot set up will be comfortable in my rig.

Well, I kinda feel like the great majority of what this boat will be doing is fishing with my two boys and 3 guys fishing will be quite comfortable. I think 4 fishing will be ok too, just not as much elbow room. The boat is rated for 6 (if I remember right) which would be too crowded for fishing really, but fine for just boating around.

I'll have a bench at the bow (should seat 2 easy) and one at the stern (3 easy) and then the captain at the helm makes 6 comfortably riding. Kids in the mix mind you, 6 grown men in that boat would be silly.

Remember though Brenn, I've got the big Islander for family fun and big fishing days.

For what you are looking for, and just one boat, 18' range might be comfortable for you.

Rock on guys:D

I ran a garden hose inside to get my cable length but now I've measured it 3 ways and got 3 different results.

OK, just went out and tried it, yah there is no way I can put a loop in either one of those. It'll want to bind too much and my helm will be close enought to the OB it's feel like a tiller. So that idea is out. No biggie, just going to grab a new one.

Yah, seeing as my boat is so short and the steering cable being super short my margin for error is next to nil. So, I'll just buy a 10 or 12 footer and then build my console around that cable. Should make for a perfect fit;)

Jas, don't know if you've seen this from the Teleflex website, but it talks about measuring for a new installation starting at about 2:15 of the video.

http://www.teleflexmarine.com/4877/marketing-material/videos/measuring-a-steering-cable-video/

If it's any help, I got a 14' for my Jet Star, but I can't let you know how that worked out because it hasn't yet!

Also, the same thing in a diagram:

Seriously? Huh.

The one that Andrew sent me is a 14 footer and that put the console waaaaay up in the bow. Like not even close to midships.

Thanks for those links lake. Yah, I have measured like they have outlined there. For me it's just a matter of how far back/forward I want them helm sinse I am allowing the cable dictate where the helm will land.

Cheers:)
