Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

OK, today's goal:

Get that Johnson OB up and running.

YAY!!! with this talk of a running engine, and a trailer ready to go... whee! Pretty soon you'll be loading lifejackets, coolers, sunscreen, anchor, you get the picture.

I've come to enjoy the frustrating hassle of old OB's... they never seem to be as simple as they are, until I find the problem, which IS always simple, and fix it. The 2-cycle exhaust is almost addictive, after trying so hard to get it to happen. Hope your motor wake-up job is easy and fun!

Awsome Jason, that is some great some great progress you are making on both the house and the boat. Not been around much for a while work is real busy and just spent 6 days at the lake. What an awsome time, good friends good drinks and good fishing..

No idea how you find the time for the boats Jas, good job on the floors..the granite was close to a month for us to wait. Trailer looks brand new. Nice job.....mini splash well for my Jet this winter, iron out the kinks so I can copy.

OK Jason.... ill bite. I feel stupid asking but what does the letters on the license plate mean?

Hang out on my thread, watch the goofy stuff I pull off and compared to me buddy, you are brilliant!

OK, here is the scoop...

You have guys who buy cool new (old) Starcrafts and rob us of what they look like by not posting photos. This triggers the "Angry Mob"...

mob-title-1-1.jpg

Now some guys really like the mob beat down, some guys come just to hang out, some guys just like an excuse to take the pitchfork off the wall, some guys like to just get out of the house. Now me, yah, I like all that don't get me wrong. But I go for the food! Yup, picnic/BBQ/potluck after every mob gathering yummy! Take a look at any of the threads where threats of a beat down fly and you'll also see fine food mixed in there;)

I bet that vanity plate makes sense now eh?:D

Hope your motor wake-up job is easy and fun!

It was! Hold tight, more to come:D

Awsome Jason, that is some great some great progress you are making on both the house and the boat.

Thanks buddy! I am day dreaming about getting that Jet on the lake man!

Thanks buddy! Yah, I'll be sure to detail it for ya. As I sit here I believe I'll shorten it by at least 1/3 maybe 1/2. I do think one of those mini splashwells would be very possible but I think I want it just a lil bigger for both form and function purposes, eh.

SUMMERS OFF!!!

Oh man, I work twice the hours during the summer months than I do during the school year. That will slowly start change over time though and eventually these houses will be (by and large) entirely rebuilt and only need basic maintenance. THEN, I hope to enjoy my summers so much more.;)

Come on over! I still have cake left from Ryan's Bday!:D

K, in the meantime check it out...

I have two steering systems here on hand...
P1060560.jpg

Rack on the right I ripped out of the 4Winns, rotary on the left was sent to me, free of charge, from Andrew (boatnut). Super awesome guy!

Bummer is they are both too long, rats. I do believe a 10 - 12 footer should do the trick. Seems like Jack the dog could care less about any of this.

I can see these cables have just about zero flexibility in them. So, pretty sure I'll need to buy a steering cable and build the console around it. I think if I do it the other way around, and am off on my measurements, I'll be in for a real fitting headache.

Here is a quick shot of my BRP controls, like em...
P1060561.jpg

Here is what I am looking at as far as room needed for controls if I mod the splashwell...
P1060558.jpg

P1060559.jpg

I really feel like I have plenty of room there. I think the control cables will just kinda lay on the splashwell (rather than bend/bind) as it tilts up. Actually, I think it will clear it all together.

I think it's a green light on the splashwell chop;)

By my calculations we should be down to about 1600 minutes left on that video upload? Did you give up and just reboot yet?

Nice! You will definitely need that cable retention piece as they'll for sure pop out without it. Your idle sounds perfect now which has me a little concerned it might be too low when in the water with back pressure on it. No biggie to bump it up a smidge. Nice motor.

Thanks man! Yah, Les isn't as much fun as Bear but he is a little more realistic;)

Yah, she sounds pretty good there, she'll sound even better sitting in the water:D

Am I an OB guy? Hummm, that Merc isn't sitting but two feet from the transom of that Jet. I could cut a key hole and make it an IO, eh!:D

The first wiff of 2 stroke smoke was beautiful buddy:)

Yah, I still have some building stuff to do but I think I am gaining on it. I am pretty sure I'll paint up that Johnson too. The over spray that is currently all over it is no good. Might as well do it now, it's off the boat. Once I get it on I'd rather run it;)

Thanks man! Yah, I am sure my marine dealer will be pumped to sell me one. What ya think? I am betting like $75 for that little piece of metal. We'll see how close I am. I may need to head over to eBay for that.

I did take a run at pull starting it, you know, just to see if I could if the batt were to ever poop out on me...

That was when it was warm ^^^^. I did attempt a cold pull start, no go - gave it 4 yanks and had to go be daddy on duty real quick. I think I might have been able to get it going given the right motivation (cold, hungry, wet, floating off to Canada, kids on board, freshwater sharks circling).

I thought you fell out of the Jet on the pull start. LOL Shouldn't be too long until the splash. I won't press for a date. But.......... you are closing in.

Nice running motor Jas. I found the videos to be a bit anti climatic started out like the Blair Witch Johnson Project but nothing frightening happened:) Based on My test run Your motor doesn't smoke nearly enough must be something wrong :D
