That sounds like a good plan. I'd just drop the tongue on a bathroom scale.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project & more pics

Today was a day of taking down, thinking and getting ready. Almost sounds like my old job. The Red Green Paint Booth that served me so well as a bird crap and rain shield, and took me half a day to put up, came down in half an hour.

I started out double checking my previous plans and thoughts about the dashboard and controls, and got sidetracked finding things I knew I had but wondered where they were. Also made a trip to Lowe's for supplies like SS fasteners that I only needed 2 or 3 of and had screwed up on my previous ordering...too short, not enough etc. Also got my 1/4" oak face plywood for the overlay. Once it's cut out, I have some epoxy resin left, so I'm thinking I'll throw some of that on before applying several coats of spar varnish.

I first double checked my dash template and tweaked those measurements. While looking over my Teleflex rack steering unit that I bought new a year ago, I found that they had shorted me one bolt and washer of the 4 that hold the two pieces of the rack & pinion unit together. Anyway, on from that to rechecking fit & position of steering unit & wheel, and figuring where my tach/gauge and switches will go. The OEM tach/gauge unit requires a 3-3/8" hole, but try to find a hole saw in that size locally. So I got a 3-1/4 and will file it out by hand. I just measured it and it won't be much filing.

I had thought I'd reinstall the interior lower gunwale trim, but found that I don't have the right size rivets. Since Lowe's has a very limited rivet selection and I don't want to buy 100 at Fastenal when I only need a dozen or so, I'll drill out the holes a little & use some I have.

The only thing I did today that looks like progress was getting the control board installed. And to feed your insatiable desire for pictures, here it is. That Jo Ann's burgundy marine vinyl is a perfect match for the paint!:)

That tach is awesome, I love the little alert icons. Does that motor run on mixed fuel, VRO, or internal oil tank?

Great features to have, and I'll bet you can't wait to see that red needle rev past 5k:D

Bombardier calls it OMS - Oil Metering 'System. It has a separate tank wiht a hose and squeeze bulb like the gas line.

Yeah, when I was looking at gauges, I settled on the brand name figuring at least I'd start out by minimizing possible compatability problems, since I don't know much on the subject. I can tell you it wasn't cheap!

Yup, getting more and more excited about getting that motor going!

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project & more pics

A quick update for today...spent the morning double and triple checking my dash template & instrument etc. locations & cut out the board. Lots of sanding to tweak that curve along the top and it finally fits great. Or good enough for me anyway. Have the first coat of spar urethane on it, next one goes on n about a half hour. Also got the aluminum trim back on the gunwales.

Here's a little side project that's been getting in the way, finished it today. A free picnic table I found on craigslist. A few boards & screws and it'll last years.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project - a glue question

A glue question...For gluing my 1/4" plywood overlay to my current dash board, I'm thinking I'll use DAP Weldwood carpenter's wood glue, an aliphatic resin. The info says it's "resistant to moisture". No plans for the dashboard to be subject to immersion or constant wet conditions! :D I guess that depends on my Gluvit work.

I'd thought about using Gorilla glue, but can't because of the oozing as it cures, it'll mess up my edge where it butts up against the upper trim.

Any other glues I should consider instead? I've had real good results before with the carpenter's glue on various projects.

Thanks.

I'd use 10 minute epoxy.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project - wiring accessories

I don't know much about this. I'm only planning to have nav. lights, a bilge pump (manual) and a 12 v accessory outlet. My thought was to run from the battery to a distribution block behind the dash with marine wire & go from there. What I don't know about is fusing, do I need to do that and how do I know what fuse sizes to use? Also, what size wire from the battery to the block?

I'm asking instead of searching because this seems relatively straightforward. I was starting to search on it when I got a phone call & now have to deal with car trouble, driving son to work, arranging for tow truck etc.

More than you proabably want to know....

http://newboatbuilders.com/pages/elect3.html

For ME, I'm gunna go with 10 guage from the battery, and then 12 guage for the lights and 16 guage for everything else.

Thanks, just what I was looking for. The super-duper tach/system check should just plug in if I'm not mistaken. This will save me som time. Still waitng for the tow truck guy to call me back to go meet & give him the key and too many $$$.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Another question to throw out there...

When I got the boat, there was a board on the outside of the transom where the motor mounts. My plan was to replace that with a piece of 1/8" aluminum. Now I'm wondering, is it really necessary to have an extra layer of something on the outside between the motor bracker and hull?

I know some people have used the cutting board type plastic. What's the story on that stuff? Cost, durability, ease of working with it etc.? Where do you get it?

Also wondering how it holds up long term to UV. Does it yellow?

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

I don't think the wood is necessary, but.... Being a woodworker I LIKE the look of it!!!! If you seal it with epoxy and then several coats of Marine Varnish it will LOOK GOOD and LAST for years. But again as far as I know NOT necessary just a matter of personal preference. I will be visiting with the BIRDS in the morning!!!!

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

I've been pondering this for two years and have finally settled on a name:

wPermanentVacation.jpg

I'll cut it in half and put one word on each side of the motor across the transom. I have to double check to make sure it will fit tomorrow. Too rainy today to take the tarp off.

Can get it in white Premium 3M cast vinyl in 3" high letters for about $17 from http://doityourselflettering.com/

I LOVE IT! When you're on the boat and people call you and ask you where you are you can say... I'm on a "Permanent Vacation"!!!!!

Check Zazzle.com they might be a little cheaper.
