Yeah just got back from the HD and she told me to make sure I'm sealed with poly or similar. I'm staying with the Weldwood (post 77) even tho' she said it was a mess to use. She also showed me some in the flooring department.

Tools DO NOT count. A hammer can be used on the boat and to hang the picture the Admiral wants there....no over there.....it looked better in the first place. You get the idea - Now sell it. LOL

Blue foam sheets is Lowes, pink dow foam sheets is HD, and 1 or the other (perhaps both) carry a grren. I've never seen anyone use green.

Just make sure its XPS, extruded poly styrene, NOT eps.

I'd get at least 2 different thicknesses, 3/4 and 1.5in or 1 and 2in. Help stuff as much as possible where ever you're putting it

glue them together? With?

New plan then will be to move noodles up front where there is less weight and standing water, then foam in the back sections. I've got a box of 42 noodles not opened I can take back.

ok All new wood floor pieces coated with poly both sides. Two sheets of pink in, looks like three more to finish the job plus my remaining six noodles to finish the edges going for 48" cuts in a 53" space to maximise usage of the pink. THis will put me about $30 more over budget when I return noodles (also get to return a quart of poly so $13 more back in). I'll get the pink in the morning and do it when it's cool. Brutal out there right now headed to the pool..

Bilge pump question - what is safe/effective on aluminum to glue to floor? Last couple boats I've had have a piece of wood glassed to the glass floor for screwing in. Obviously cannot do that here. Gonna be a bear to clean a spot; about a 12" x 12" space to try to get wire brush in.

pics are boring so none tonight.

amazing what you can do in between conference calls. Trip to dump, Dollar store to return noodles, HD for more pink and then install them

Next, pull a hub and run to O'Reillys and get bearings and suich as well as a bilge pump (yes they sell them at my O'Reilly's)

Oh and before I put a motor on (if I can ever find one) I'm going to do the pull the boat off the trailer with ropes and a tree trick I've seen here. Need to get bucks up to speed before I put more weight on it.

good news. At least the starboard hub/bearings/axle are good.

Looks like the tape was to add girth to the bearing buddy to keep on an oversized dust cap on.

and the back of the tire has no fresh grease on it, at least not much. Lots of old.

the grease that was inn there wass pretty runny so thinking whoever packed them last time used the wrong kind of grease. There might have been a bit squeezing out the seal. Is there a way to get the seals off without killing them? I've always replaced everything on the ones i've done this is the fist strictly repack i've ever done. No matter, will buy a couple more. I'm buying a set for one wheel anyway I read somewhere to pack them and put in a vaccum bag. Awesome idea I've got a spare on the Carver now.

On you bilge pump question I've seen people use epoxy or use 3m 5200 to secure them to aluminum boat hulls. As far as how much you got done between conference calls my head is spinning!

So the PO used Red Green Show tips for trailer maintenance!

New bearings, races and seals. Your gonna be PO'ed when the old re-used seals spew grease on the wheel, Joe.

Foam is good enough that I'll go on a boat ride with you. :D

How many knee braces do you have? I have three and I made an bracket out of AL strap that was attached between two of them with the bilge pump mounted to it. Or you could do what one of us found where a PO used some wood screws to hold the pump base on the hull.

Wasn't 1 of them screwed down into the bunk..... IIRC that was Jas and the PO had used 2"+ screws for a 1/4" job..... Stuck WAY down below the bottom of the hull....

Nice progress Joe. I agree w/ Don, new races, seals and bearings....

I think it was Jason, JB It looked a porcupine from the bottom. :nono:

What I was describing above was a wide "U" shaped bracket with a screw through each up side of the "U" into the knee brace. |______| I made two brackets, one for each side of the center KB. Switched pump on one side and auto with a float switch on the other.

Bearings and races were clean as a whistle, one king nut had a hair bit of rough to it otherwise everything in there looked really, really good. New seals of course, but reused everything else with a spare set greased and ready for the vacu-seal. From the looks of it the po was probably using too much grease as evidenced by the blowout on the inside of the tire plus the buddy bearings has loads of grease in the front so probably filling up until pushed out front and back. Plus it was thin grease I bet it was the same crap I (still) have in my cabinet that says 'for boat trailers' but not #2. Anyway skipped the afternoon call so I could keep working. Feels good to know no wheel will fall off like happened on the Carver

Bilge pump I got a round one and thinking something like GA said I got a 3" stainless hose clamp too so a dab of 5200 and a clamp on the top (it's round). I'll monkey with that later. It will be under (and have a big access hole cut) the last deck under the splashwell. Forgot to get hose.

Tomorrow two items for sure, more if time permits.
  • Pulling boat off the trailer while hooked to a tree in the front yard. Wife is going to FREAK out but the boat is not sitting well and there looks to be a bit of metal on metal contact from the bunk brackets. Nothing serious unless I don't get done and since it is light without the floor should be easy. Like how I said 'should be easy'??? Here, hold my beer...
  • Need to make patterns for the floor pieces - got a note from a lurker who looks to have gotten the exact boat but deceased po tore everything out and discarded so went to HD got a roll of paper and will trace patterns and mail to TX hopefully this week.
Now, go jump in the pool while waiting on wife to come home after stopping at the cold beverage store. I'm using the backup, emergency liquid - the stuff that is clear and not legal in most counties of the state so she better hurry.

Need opinions.

Been focusing on finding a motor with tnt. Hard to find and keep missing. Always had them but on this boat how important?

TnT is nice but 100s of 1000s of smaller boats are running around without it. Don't have TnT on my 16, no water sports with her. I just found the best pin hole and let it sit there.

What's the max HP on her. Joe?

We don't have tnt on our 16 foot SS either. It would be nice for water sports, but like GA said we just found the best pin location and run it that way all the time. Makes raising the motor in shallow areas a little bit of a chore too, but where we fish it's not that often the motor comes up once we launch. Unless I have to tinker with something to keep her running. That can be real interesting.

On the rare occasion something does go a miss when on the water, and I'm hanging out over the splashwell playing mobile marine mechanic, the Admiral and First Mate pass the down time making wagers on how many tools will end up in the lake and how many cuss words will float out onto the water while said mechanic tries to get us mobile again. I think if I ever fell in while working on the engine it would make their day. :D

if I'm doing this correctly and feel free to check my math: http://newboatbuilders.com/pages/33CFR_HP.html

16' long with 6' transom = 100HP

Now I found another site using the same math but in the verbiage it mentioned waterline length and just guessing that @ 14' that puts me at an 80 HP.

Beam overall is 16' 4" and transom alone is 6' so I went with the 6'.

I've been looking at the V4 Johhnyrudes 115 hp or less I'm assuming they are all very close in weight and as I've said before I know how to properly use my right arm/hand. Even if 80, the closest prospect I have (just up the road) is and 85 so should be good.

Funny when things go bad when I am alone, that is me. When people are with me I'm a much more polite p****d-off person.

As far as the water sports probably not we've got the Carver for that if we need the power but even still if I'm at the upper limit should be enough power to hole shot for tubes which is most likely what we''ll be doing. Got one buddy that does tandom skis might teach him how to drop one.
