Thanks guys. Dennis- the tarps only went up to the rafters. You could see in the first pic that there is still space for dust and heat to get through.

Hey Mick.
My emblems look exactly the same. I was thinking about researching how to make new emblems with these as molds and then having them chromed. I was also thinking about carefully hand sanding them then chroming them. Although, looking closer, mine are more elevations than pitting. Let me know how you solve this.

I wonder if you guys got together, if you could find someone to cut you a deal on making reproductions if you buy two sets? Can't wait to see you start on the top Mick!

Donkey- let me know if you find anything out and I will let you know if I find anything out on the emblems. What arch said sounded like a good idea. Do you have any places around you that cast stuff?

Well we got the boat flipped today and set up out side. There were only 4 of us- my wife, mom, and dad. It was interesting to say the least and very heavy. The ladies had the front and my dad and I had the back. Once we got it outside we turned it around, laid down carpet, and stood it up on the transom- then laid it down on the keel.

After that we got the cap over on the other side of the garage for me to work on.

Here are the pics.

The cap in place.

You can see- they only had one piece of glass on the not even pollied plywood. I would probably just leave it but since the front needs to be walked on for gas I will be removing and making it better.

And a look at all the wiring that will be coming out- remember I got a new unicharger.

What do I need to look for in purchasing a new steering wheel? Do I need the new drum thing behind the wheel or just a new wheel?

Thanks Guys. Going out now to start removing stuff!!!

You lucky dog...you won't have to lay on your back to rewire up under the dash. Figure out what elect accessories you want and make the wiring harness now. Can't really see your steering wheel, but if it comes off you can refinish/repaint it and keep using it. The steering cable hub should come off of the column.

Great progress. It won't be long now.:)

I don't have any knowledge for you; just encouragement. Keep up the good work.

BTW- I've got a line on another boat. I hope to be posting soon.:D

Hey Mick looks great, no way I could get my mom to help flip the boat! You might want to think about updating the steering......teleflex has some nice systems that improve steering and safety. By the way where is the snow?

Believe it or not....a new wheel will fit on your existing drum. I put a new one on my '66 and it fit just fine. (a modern rack or rotary system is a very worthwhile upgrade)

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks guys for the great comments!

Yeh I dropped the ball on having more people here to help flip the boat. I waited to the last minute- and I feel bad putting people out to help. My mom is a trooper and so is my wife. My mom actually tripped when we were carrying the boat out and she went down. My heart almost dropped too but my wife kept the front up so my mom could catch herself.

I was thinking teleflex steering but again- no clue about it or it's components. Point me in the right direction to learn about it if you can compared to what I have now.

I'm out here now removing everything. All I have left is the steering wheel. I don't have big enough wrenches so I am going to try and get it with adjustables:eek:

I will post pics and a video later if it's not to late on what I'm doing tonight!

Hey Mick,
Glad to see that cap out of the rafters.
I would go with the new steering system if you can. Most of the sites tell you how to measure for it to make sure you get the right one.
Looks like fun.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Wow, my computer is running really sloooooowwwwwww right now. I'm still waiting for the video to upload.

Ok I got everything out of the boat tonight- electrical, odds and ends stuff, etc... Then I came to the steering wheel. This thing just won't come out. I got the bolts off of each end but after that, it still won't budge, even after about half a can of wd-40. Anyone want to clue me in on how to get this thing off???

This pic and the next one are shots after the bolt that was on each was removed

Again, the wheel spins and such but I can't remove the steering wheel to get the shaft to come out so I can remove the whole assembly?

All the electrical is out of the boat now. All I want in the boat is a am/fm radio, a fishfinder, a 12 volt charger for phone, etc. and a trolling motor for the back of the boat. I'm going to have to learn how to attach all of that to the uni-charger- again-NEWBIE at electrical on a boat?

Here is a pic of the mess that was in there before. All the wiring was for the lights switch, unicharger, gas gauge, anmeter gauge, and horn. You can also see the wiring harness(I'm assuming that's what it is) as well that was in there

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

I would recommend this steering system for your boat (I will be putting it in mine as well) http://www.wholesalemarine.com/p/TEL-SS13711/ (sorry iboats, your price sucks and your picture is confusing )

You will need an adapter to make it work with your motor. I'm working on finding out for you what exactly that is and where you can get it.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

The link/product ezombee posted will work, but it doesn't give you full motor travel from side to side. As for your old steering wheel, unless it's been jerry rigged it may have a drift pin that has to be driven out before the steering wheel will budge. If not, don't know...never seen one without it.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

looks like you are on the down hill slide Mick! Did the unicharger come with a wiring diagram? I would upgrade the steering to a rack, I think you will be happy you did. Outboard don't do well if the steering goes out! Just wondering, why replace the boards? Are they rotted out? Seems like if they are solid, just adding some glass would work. Maybe add some stiffeners between them?

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

I had a similar problem with my steering wheel, check my thread if you want a laugh. What I found, by accident, is that all the grease and crud was concealing a c clip which was what held the steering shaft. Maybe you should clean it up a bit and check that out. Other people talk about it having a tapered shaft which needs to be pulled off, I suggest you be careful as I almost destroyed mine by pulling when it was actually a C-clip I needed to remove.

Let us know how it works out and good luck!
