Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Dennis- Do you have a thread for your boat? I'd like to see it! That was my whole intention of this thread- to make it as educational as possible. Whether right or wrong, I am documenting everything so anyone like me(newbie) can have a step by step document when they start up. People who know more than I do(everybody on here) chime in and give their opinions and that is priceless when it comes to starting out on something like this. If you have a question- you ask, they give their opinions and you go from there. Good Luck on your boat- post a pic here!

Arch- Son of a gun!!! I wanted to take a picture of the trailer today arch! I was mulling it over a couple days ago and it needs ALOT of work!!! New wheels, prob new bearings, some welding, new fenders, sanding, paint, new wiring and lights. I can get a brand new aluminum one from my boat place with bunks and everything else for $500. Once I get to the trailer, which oh by the way should be when I'm done with the bottom paint! I will price everything out and see if it's worth it to put all the time and money into the old one vs. a new one.

I'm still on schedule for primer(undercoater it's called by easypoxy) on Friday. The only thing I didn't get done tonight was the vacuuming and cleaning of the garage. I will do that hopefully tomorrow when I get home at 9:30. Then hopefully 2 coats of paint between Saturday and Sunday. I will get at least one coat on by the end of this weekend!!!

Here are some of the pics from days ago when my camera battery died. I think this was the 4th go around with filler.

Remember I added the sandable premium filler over the not so sandable high strength filler on the keel just to smooth it out more.
100_1213.jpg

This area and the transom in the next pic were a bear to sand down- from experience- only add the amount of filler that you need!!!

Tonight I basically sanded for 5 hours. It may not look pretty but after sanding with the 150 like pettit recommends for the final sanding she is as smooth as a babies bottom! She got vacuumed tonight, but after cleaning the garage she needs to be washed, acetoned, and tack clothed and then it's go time!!!

Wow! I have 622 pictures and 17 videos in my photobucket account to this point! Those all won't fit in an album!

Goodnight!

Looking great Mick! I would bet the new trailer might be the cheaper way to go, but maybe not. I bought new springs, hubs and an axle, think it was $180. New lights, $30, fenders were $60, probably about $100 in rollers and bunk brackets.....$40 for the winch......plus sandblasting, paint and I need to get new tires / wheels. Hopefully your trailer is in a little better shape than mine. I personally also have bearing buddies on my boat trailers (still need to add them). Water and bearings don't go well together!

For that price you can stop deliberating. That's absolutely a no brainer. NEW NEW NEW. I hate trailers.

I will be gluing my stringers Doug fir 2Xs in with pl premium, anyone know how generous or conservative i need to be on the glue???? ie: should it ozze out as if using pb ,never even thought of construction adhesive to bond them in, liked it as soon as i heard the idea tho, sounds much easier, what is the working time on the glue?

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

They are originally $599 but since I've been using them for everything they said they would sell me one for $500:) I guess that's the percs of staying local. That's about what I spent extra though in all my supplies as I could have spent on-line.

Arch- I figured it might be a little cheaper to do it all myself but when you figure in the 20-30 hours or so of working on the old trailer compared to the hour it would take to go over there, pick up the new one, come home and put the boat on the trailer! So I have to decide save $100 but spend 20-30 hours of work on the old one, or spend another $100 and have my boat sitting on it ready to go in under an hour:D I think my mind was made up last night!

Thanks guys for all the replies! Cleaning the garage tonight and priming the boat tomorrow night!

Does your current trailer have a title? If so, it actually probably has SOME value if you sell it.

ez- yes it has a title and I plan on either trading it in or selling it on my own for a couple hundred bucks.

Mick, I haven't noticed so if anyone has already said it sorry. If you haven't got the blue and you have you're heart sat on red, I'm sure you could tint it and get the red you want.

Nice boat by the way.

Hey Mick,
You are making some good progress on the boat.
As for the trailer, like the others have said, Go new for that price. If you can get a couple hundred out of the old one, then you are way ahead.

Academy has water proof trailer lights on sale this week for 9.99 FYI. Hope that doesn't get me in trouble but its a good deal.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks guys for the info! Couple things- we are dead set on the blue, I prob will be concurring the trailer unless I find an in better shape used one, and she just had her last acetone bath about 10 minutes ago.

Turns out the trailer at $500 is for an 800 pound boat. Mine is just about that I'm assuming after the extra glass and seacast. The trailer is still bigger than the one I have so I will have to look into it some more to see what's legal.

I just got done cleaning everything up on the garage and gave her the final acetone bath! So she'll get a "tacky" wipe down tomorrow and then primer.

Oh, I also drilled holes for the bow eye bolt and the two stern tow eye bolts.

I'm getting to bed cause tomorrow is going to be a long night! I'm still trying to recruit the wife to help but she ain't budging:confused:

goodnight!

Hey Mick.. a bit off subject...but I wanted to tell you that a good friend and former teamate signed with the Phillies this year and will most likely be playing in Lehigh Valley. I told him that I knew a guy that lived in the town and he might want to take his family to catch some games...If you ever need tickets once the season gets going, shoot me a PM and I will have him put your family down on the Pass list.

Take care.

Mick, dont forget to include the motor wheight into your 800 pound limit. My guess is that you will be over that on a new trailer. Seems to me you would need a little bigger trailer than 800 pounds.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Well, I got her primed tonight. One step closer to the end goal!

I primed the entire hull and then about an hour later after she was dry I went back and put another coat on the areas that were still noticeable under the primer- basically the areas that were filler areas.

Here are the pics!

Remember this look!
100_1217.jpg
[/IMG]

And after primer here is how she looks! She'll look even better after tomorrow!

Tomorrow I'll sand her down with some steel wool, clean her up, and get on her first coat of paint!!!

Oh, a side note on the trailer. My boat weighed 630 and my motor 240 for a total of 870 pounds. Plus a filled 19 gallon tank times 8.35 pounds per gallon equals 158.65 pounds for a grand total of approx. 1029 pounds boat weight. The extra glass and poly I added, and the 15 gallons of seacast added weighed just under 200 pounds for a new grand total of around 1200 pounds.
So where I am going with this is my old trailer had a max weight of 800 pounds- therefore I wouldn't be legal if I get pulled over, even on an empty tank of gas and nothing in the boat.

Long end of the short of it I need a 1200 pound trailer at minimum. My boat place would sell me the 800 pound trailer for $500. I can get the 1200 pound trailer for $600 plus tax and tags for around another $100. So for a brand new 2010 trailer I can get it for $700, plus take off $100-150 for trading in my trailer- so now I'm at about $600-650 for a brand new trailer. They do have some used ones that they will show me next week some time that I still may consider if I don't have to put too much time into it.

Whatever, let me know what you think!

Goodnight!

Looks great mick!

$600 dollars for a brand new trailer is a great price! I would not hesitate to get one if i had that option here in washington. A 1200 pound trailer would run me a $1000 new (and thats a good deal) around here.

600 dollars is awesome. I'd be looking at minimum 1500 for one. I know years ago I bought a brand new EZ Loader trailer. I had it for 3 months when it was stolen. And I had it locked right to my car. Just about broke my heart.
