Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Hey guys! Yeh we got some snow today but I didn't have to pick up a shovel yet? It didn't stick on anything but the grass although it's been snowing all day- wierd? It is starting to blow now pretty good and they are calling for another 4-7 tonight so we'll see if we have a four day weekend or not.

I was on the boat for about 3 hours this afternoon and got one full side of the boat sanded and half of the other side with 100 grit. Before I did that I also went over the entire bottom of the boat with 100 grit as well.

Here is what I have to do yet- you can see the difference in color- I have to do the three ribs yet that are an off white color and still have some shine to them.

Kinda boring pictures but whatever. I sanded the sides by hand with this archbuilder- not as pretty as your block but it does the job:D

Well, that's it for today. I gotta finish that one side and the keel with 100 grit and then I will fill everything that needs to be filled.

Frisco, Bob, Arch, Tink- Yeh sanding gave me some kind of bad dream last night:eek:

Hand sanding though is pretty nice. Being a P.E. teacher and all, when you get going you get a pretty good cardio workout and a great arm and shoulder workout. I haven't worked out for months (wonder why:rolleyes: boat amybe?) but this is giving me a great workout. I haven't started a fire yet while hand sanding because I have been getting heated up pretty quick just by working quickly.

Not closed for tomorrow yet but I'm hoping we get a call soon!

This afternoon I got the side finished sanding and the keel to 100 grit as well.

She also got her first bath with warm soap and water!

She's drying now so she will be ready for her first round of acetone and filler tonight:D

Hey Mick looking good! You have a ways to go, but I bet you have paint on it faster than any of us would guess! I can't wait to see her with some primer on her!

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Tonight I got all the filling done! It took about 4 hours from prep to finish. I'd say the sanding all together was a combined 12-15 hours to get to this point.

I started the filling process with the keel by using the high strength 3m filler. That stuff is hard as a rock(should be fun sanding it)! I'm probably gonna get it as smooth as possible and then add the premium 3m filler over it to smooth it out if I can't get it smooth enough. The premium filler with fiberglass bubbles is alot thinner/smoother than the high strength with short strand.

Then I used the high strength 3m filler on any spots that were down to fiberglass like the crack, the area that sat on the trailers roller, the transom area that had some de-lamination, and where I cut through the hull while cutting out the deck way back when.

After that I marked all of my nicks and scratches with a sharpie and filled all of them with 3m premium glass filler.

I have a bunch more pics on my photobucket account if you'd like to look. I will show a few here but I will pretty much sum it up with my 2 **VIDEOS**

Keel, crack in gelcoat, and roller area After 3m high strength filler(did I mention this stuff is hard as a rock!)

A look at some of the sharpie marks of nicks and scratches(probably about 100-125 all together)

And filled with 3m premium filler

And a look at the transom with the first round of filler(both high strength and premium filler)

Again, I have I think 14 or 15 more pics on the whole filling process in my photobucket account if you'd like to see more!

Here are the two videos that pretty much some everything up from before the filler to the after.

That's it. More sanding to come! Goodnight

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Hey guys! I'm kinda pissed because after 9 hours (and counting) of being on the boat today it looks like I could be ready for primer tomorrow:D the reason I'm pissed is cause I didn't pick it up yet because I didn't think I'd be ready till next weekend.

Still out here now at 12:30 just about to do my fourth and FINAL round of filler. This afternoon I got my second round done and sanded. Then I marked a bunch less spots and filled those and worked on the transom some more. Tonight I did the same and here I am. A final sanding tomorrow of 150 (what pettit recommends) and good cleaning and I'll be ready for primer!

I'm really pissed cause things are going to slow down drastically for me because we start baseball this Monday(I'm coaching)

so my plan is prime sometime this week, check for any spots that need filling, spot prime them, and then 1st coat of paint Saturday, and second coat Sunday! I really wanna do 3 coats on the bottom but we'll see what it looks like and what's in the budget.

Pettit recommend 24 hours dry time so 3 coats is 3 full days where I gotta have the fire stoked for 8 hours- no more late night jobs.

Well, your updated. Gotta fill one last time!
Goodnight

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Mick, sorry to hear things will be slowing down....but you will be really happy when that paint is on! They should add "this is my last round of filler" to that denial list! :D I said that yesterday, then added some more to the trailer!

Mick,
It's great that you were able to get this far before baseball season starts up. It is looking great and it looks like you are in the final stretch. You will still have it done before the weather is good enough to get out on the water I'm sure.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks arch and obx. I'm sure I will still get time on the boat but the first couple weeks of the season we have the gym 7-9 so that will be weeks where I just have the weekends on the boat:mad:

Here is the lone pic I have of the work I did yesterday. My battery died on the camera so I had to get a new one this morning.

The pic is of the keel and the 3m high strength I put on it. They weren't lying when they said it is difficult to sand! After I got it all sanded down though I added a layer of the 3m premium so I can sand it smooth. I'm not going to get to it today so it will have to wait till???

Here is the shot of the keel- the part on the left was sanded as opposed to the right side. It took me over an hour with 80 grit(I think 4 pads) just to do the keel!)

Big improvement from the before though!

Off to a birthday party

Oh yeh. I posted this in archbuilders thread but I figured I'd show it here.

This boat is for sale locally. If I had a grand laying around I'd be all over making an offer on it. This boat would look sweet redone and repainted! And arches favorite tower of power- max's cousin mad max!

Jarad- this would be a good project boat for you:D We can park it in my garage and when I'm done with mine we can work on it:rolleyes:!!!

Hey Mick,
The boat is coming right along. I too am sorry to hear it is going to slow down for you. You still have a lot of time to complete it.
Real life things do come along.
Keep up the good work and just work on it when you can.
Take care my friend.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks guys!

I think I'm starting to get depressed. Won't be on the boat again today or tomorrow. I'll prob do the final sanding and clean up Wednesday night at the earliest. Then prob prime as long as it takes Friday night and do my first coat of paint Sunday hopefully.

I did call to order my white bottom paint today though:)

Hey Mick it could be worse....just think about Bob! What colors are you going to do? I think you are trying to match the original colors right?
