Paintbooths are a necessity for auto paint. A piece of dust will cause a crater in the paint. Also you have a fan pushing the air in one direction and spray from the fan to the other end to keep the overspray from going into the fresh paint. Last car I painted I looked up after and saw a puddle of water laying on the plastic above the car. If I hadnt had the booth those drips would have destroyed the paint.

So is the pettit boat paint I'm using like automotive paint? Do I need a booth or will tarps do just to eliminated the excess spray?

Yes, It suggests 3 mil wetfilm. So it goes on about the same thickness as auto paint. Did you buy the thinner they reccomend with it? When you spray start by the fan and work away from it. Get a good oval spray pattern by shooting at a scrap board or something flat for just a moment to see what your pattern looks like. then when spraying always hold the trigger so air is coming out but only pull all the way as you are moving the gun. Practice this moving accross what you want to paint, start moving the gun and when you get to where you want to actually apply the paint then pull all the way. when you get to the end release the trigger enough to stop the paint but keep moving the gun. your tip should be pointed at the edge of where the last pass covered. This will make each pass cover half already painted area and half unpainted. esentially doing 2 coats of paint.

I may need to stick with the roll and tip painting then!

Wait till you hear what I did tonight!

I started by working on the piece that will go under the dash. I glued the back with PL and temporarily screwed it to the original piece.

Then I used filler around the edges

I also have a piece cut and put it place for the back so when I glass it in I can wrap it around.

Then all hell broke loose. I have had a couple days to think about the deck thing now and I decided I am going to do csm around the edges of the whole deck. Basically 4 inches or so on the deck and then up the side of the boat 6-8 inches. I'm not going to do the whole deck because it doesn't need it- heck, the sides probably don't need it but it is just piece of mind for me. Right now the tab is only about 4 inches and that is the only part that frightens me because of the gap I had that I filled with foam. IDK- I'm just basically doing it for piece of mind- so I'm not thinking about it all the time. Figured I'd do it now before it's to late.

SoI had to do more grinding- agguhhh. Because I only grinding up so far the first time

I was totally upset by this because I really did not want to be cleaning up dust from everywhere again. So I said the heck with it- I threw the tarp over the boat and said I'm not coming out till it's done- I didn't have a tyvec suit just my mask.

I actually had to come out once when I got done with the one side. I came out to clean my eyes with water, went outside for fresh air and to cool off, and the get a fresh disk!

Anyways- I got it done and I will pull the tarp and clean tomorrow once everything settles. The garage is still clean too- any dust in it was from me when I got out! Every step I took dust was coming off of me floating around!

Here is what it looks like from grinding a 5-6" wide strip approx. 16 feet long! It's nuts how dusty it gets!
Here is the before- you see my tab is only about 3-4 inches(it will be 8-10 up the wall and 4-6 on the deck after the csm)

And the after and the dust!

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

darn you scared me. When you said guess what I did and then mentioned grinding I expected you cut a hole in the bottom of the boat. Great job controlling the dust but grinding dust is nothing compared to my yellow garage. I blew it out, wiped it down, swept, and mopped and it is still yellow. A friend has a floor buffing business and is going to bring over a buffer with a scrubbing pad to try and get all the overspray off the floor.

Hey Mick,
You are a brave man going in there without a suit. I'm not sure I want to contain it that bad.
The boat is looking good.

We may have to call you Itchy from now on. You will be washing dust out of every crease and crevice for days. LOL. Looks awesome though.

Hey Mick,

Looks great....I had to do a little grinding yesterday where I added the seacast to the transom. I hated it.....just glad it was only a small spot!

You guys are crazy! I just had a little itch on both wrists, both ankles, neck, and a little rash right at my hairline. Nothing major though:eek:
I am going to try and get out this afternoon to clean up. Tonight is out- gotta go to a movie with the wife for valentines day

Yeh I forget to mention what's left of the hairline:mad:

Pretty soon I'm gonna have a haircut likes your arch!

I cleaned up the boat today. I'll post some pics later. I emailed my boat to see if I can get in today or tomorrow- I'm out of csm and almost out of poly. Still waiting to here back from them though.

Here are the pics from this afternoon after I pulled the tarp to clean up the boat. Can you tell where I was laying?!?!

And after it was vacuumed and wiped down with warm water and soap. You can see I sanded up another 5-6" all the way around.

To think, the lengths we go for peace of mind. You are really going to be able to just sit back and enjoy your boat when you're done. [itch, itch, scratch, scratch].

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

You guys are funny!

Serious question while I'm thinking about it. Are you guy who had to remove the top filling in all you rivet holes from you rub rails and then drilling new ones when you put it back on?

I have been wandering that because since I drilled them out I'm left with a 3/16" diameter hole in most of them. Some are a 1/4", some are 1/8".

Just to make them all uniform I'm thinking of using short haired fiberglass filler to fill them all and then re-drill in between when I get to that point.

Thanks

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Mick I glassed all the holes up on the back side....all 63000 of them. I didn't grind the glass....just put some mat and glass right over what was there. Then on the outside I filled them. I'm getting new rub rail, so I'm not sure if it was worth my time. The new holes will probably not match the old one, but as Bob says Murphy will show up!
