Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Pauly- I'm leaning that way too.

I did think about the other way a couple of times but I think red is too bold to do on the top and bottom with white in the middle- I think that will look to heavy if you now what I mean?

I am interested to hear what you guys think though so let me know your thoughts.

Tonight no school work so i should be finishing up the boat bottom tonight! I will be filling the rivet holes, removing the stickers, and sanding along the top edge. Then it will be time to recruit people to help me flip it over and start work on the bottom:D

Mick,

IMHO - Definitely keep it old-school, classic white on the bottom. The other way you'll look like a bobber or a diver down flag.

Keep up the good work. I'm learning so much by following your thread. I can't wait for the 2' of snow to melt off the top of my boat, so I can go get it.

Hey Mick,
There is a lot to be said for old school but on the other hand, this is your boat that you have put a lot of great work into.
There is nothing wrong with putting you signature on it.
I'm not sure I would go with a solid red bottom but perhaps some red graphic strips would just be enough set it off.
I know you will come up with the right call for you.
Good luck.
Bob

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks guys. Since the beginning I wanted to make it look original. If anything else would be done to it with the red, it would definitely have to be subtle.

Maybe someone will photoshop something for me:cool:

Pete do you have a thread started on here yet- I can't remember- but I definitely want to follow your progress.

Farmers almanac says we are getting a significant amount of snow again Monday!

Mick,

Not yet. I'm still working out picking the boat up. I was supposed to get it this weekend; but it's in Bellaire, OH under 2' of snow right now.:( The plan is to go about mid March and get it. That's as soon as the seller's and my schedules match up again.

Very much looking forward to starting. Thanks for asking.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Last night I got pretty much everything I wanted to get done before I flip it. I just didn't get to sanding around the edges. I will do that tonight. Then I have to come up with something to rest it on.

The first thing I did tonight was cut 1"X1" square with leftover cloth. These would then be used to close up the rivet holes from the inside so that I can use filler on the outside. I had to 120 rivet holes to fill.

The letters came off like butter with the heat gun, a plastic scraper, and some acetone to clean it all up.

Then after all the 1X1 squares were dry I mixed some filler and filled all the holes and uneven spots, and then called it a night.

Hey Mick I can't believe you took those sexy numbers off! ;) Remember on the body filler, just put on the minimum....the more you put on, the more you have to sand off! I did a post on the paint questions you ask by the way. Hope you have a good weekend to make progress!

Arch- yeh the numbers had to go. I will be painting on the new numbers when it comes time for that.

Tonight I got the top edge all sanded down, I cleaned up a bit!

I cleaned off this table and put it on the other side of the garage out of the way
to make some room for tomorrow

Then I started measuring and planning for what I am going to put the boat on when we FLIP IT!

I'm going with saw horses rated for 2500 pounds so I don't have to worry about them collapsing. These are nice to because you can adjust all four leg heights individually which works great for my uneven floor.

I'm putting 2X4's on them and then will do some cross supports as well. They will get the boat about a foot and a half off the ground for me to work on the bottom.

This is the last time you'll see the boat in these cradles for a while!!!

I'm excited to move on to the next stage and get one step away from paint! I still haven't figured how we are going to flip it yet but we'll figure it out tomorrow I guess- should be awkward!!! I don't have the bow eye bolt in or the two ski hook ups in yet either so that way is out of the question.

My boat place is ordering me replica eye bolts that are an exact match of my old ones so I am pretty happy about that as well. They are only $15 a piece and made in the USA

Goodnight

Hope your flippin buds are all BOBs (big ol' boys). Rather than lift and flip it, I would put it on the ground with ropes under it (side to side) and a ramp to your saw horses on one side. Pad the ramp with a large blanket or two. Use the ropes to lift one side and slowly invert it on the ramp...then drag it on the padding up the ramp and onto your supports. Or get the boat inverted and a little up the ramp, then raise the down side of the ramp to X-height and put your sawhorses under it wherever you want.

I would recommend against painting the numbers on. There are plenty of places that can supply you with some snazzy looking number stickers and unless you were a darn perfect painter or stenciler, they'd look better. Plus they'd be easier to replace if they ever needed to be changed or were damaged.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Ezombee- I was going to have one of the art teachers where I teach do the letters for me. I am going to give them the Arkansas traveler logo and have them match the font and style for the letters. I know it would be permanent but I think it would be a nice touch.
I guess I can have them match the font and style and then take it to a decals place and have them do the stickers? I gotta think about it a bit.

That's a cool idea. But I would see if they can do it on a computer and then have decals made.

Well the flip went well- it wasn't pretty but we got it on about the third attempt. It is definitely a tank!

He is what she looks like now and the work I am going to have to do- ALotta 3m bubbles are going to go on the bottom of this thing!

This is where the rollers sat on the trailer. All the rot allowed them to do some damage. The trailer will have bunks in the future!

Well, it doesn't look as bad as the inside did before you started. You've got that going for you.
