Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks arch. That's what I plan on doing- I'm gonna throw a strip of glass on the inside and fill from the outside on both the cap and the hull.

Where is Bob? Haven't heard from him in a bit. Maybe he's got some good weather and he's working on the boat! Or he's working on the motor. My guess is the latter!

Goodnight

I can't believe how far behind I got in reading in just one day. Wow!! (scratch),(Itch), (scratch),(Itch), (scratch),(Itch), :D:D
Hey I use to have a four head now it's a five. Ha, Ha.
I do have some pic's to post of the motor we picked up.

Hey Mick, I ran a strip of fiberglass down the whole side, then when I put the cap back on, I caulked in between the hull and cap where they join. Then riveted and screwed to each other, then came the rub rail.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks for all the replies to the fiberglass itching thing guys! The reward far outweighed the itch though!
TMcalvy- sorry to hear about your disappointment! After our valentines festivities the wife even let me go out on the boat!

Tonight I got some stuff done on the boat. I cut out the opening for my access way to up under the bow, rounded over the edges, vacuumed, acetoned, and then glassed around the opening. I also used what csm I had left to tab in the upper corners of the new piece to the boat. I left some of the screws in too so I put some csm over them.

Two layers of cloth. I'm getting pretty good at this glassing thing! No airbubbles!

A look from the back. Again, the piece that was there is good but I just wanted to "beef" it up some and to make it cleaner looking since my neighbor hacked it up so he could fit the new gas tank in.

I also pollied both sides of the door that will go on it. I will glass this front and back as well when I get some more glass tomorrow.

And a look at the tabbed in areas. I have more to go but this was all the csm I had left.

I'm out of poly, out of cloth, out of csm! I will be making a run to the boat store tomorrow so I can get the inside of this boat finished up so I can flip it.

Hopefully a week or two and I will be painting! Still haven't decided if I'm going to spray or roll and tip. I'm not sure I got it in me to do a booth for spraying??? I don't know- we'll see when I get there.

Goodnight!

Looks great Mick. I think the rolling and tipping would work best for you. You have a dirt floor right? I don't think you would be very happy trying to spray in there. I can see a lot of dust getting kicked up by the air from the gun.

If you roll-n-tip in that environment, you will need to experiment with the paint and shop temps first. The self-leveling paint is picky about application temperatures, but the process works great once you have it worked out.

tmcalavy- I have yet to purchase the paint but I'm assuming if I keep the garage heated to the manufacturers recommendation I should be ok. The garage has been consitently between 65-70.

The dirt floor can easily be defeated with a tarp for spraying.

Hey Mick,
Don't forget when you paint, it's not just the ambient air temp. You will want the boat itself to be close to the same temp. rt it heat up before you start to paint.
The boat is looking great.
Keep up the great work.

Hey micks,

Do you have any close up pictures of how you braced your transom before you poured your seacast? I am pouring the nidabond tomorrow and getting supply's in the morning to brace up the transom. Just wondering how you did it?

thanks.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Here is what I got done last night. No work on the boat tonight- schoolwork:(

I got my pieces of csm cut in about 3 foot sections 12 inches wide and ran them from back to front. Csm you definitely have to work to get it saturated, and hanging over the boat all the way around was not fun. But, I got it done and no bubbles. I'm happy now and have no regrets.
all cut and laid out

And pollied

I also glassed in the area up under the bow. I started by tabbing in along the sides and bottom with csm, and then traced out, cut my cloth, and then pollied it up. Came out good. I also did one side of the door for it as well(no pic-forgot- it was 2am)

Before I flip the boat I am going to glass all the rivet holes and fill them with short strand filler. I will also sand along the entire top edge and remover the letters and numbers.

Then it's flip, fill nicks and sand, and then paint!

Thank God we are off page 23! That itchy guy that popped up first every time was giving me the itchies!

Thanks Bob and Arch.

bob- i am going plain jane on the boat just like the original. Bright white on the bottom and inside, and red on the top.

Mick, I think you need to get a bit more racey! Two colors would be nice and not that hard!

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Hey arch. The thought did cross my mind. I've seen a couple boats on shipshape with the bottom painted the same color as the top
Kinda like this(I hope my paint job doesn't turn out like this:eek:)

Obviously though, the two colors would be the same- not like in my drawing. So from the bottom up it would be red-white-red.

I don't know? Let me know what you guys think:)
