Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Mtribe I used 2 layers of CSM on mine and it worked great. The main thing you are doing is stiffing it up a little more and making it water tight.

Thanks Arch! How heavy was your CSM?? 1oz 1.5oz?
Thanks so much.

One layer of 1.5 and one of 2.0. I miss ordered and end up with the 2.0 instead of the 1.5. I think the two layers of 1.5 would be fine.

That's what I'll do then, thanks!

That exactly what I did- 32 ounces at a time with2 on stand by. My first batch I did 17cc of hardner at about 65 in the garage. Set up to fast so the next batch I went 16cc and that was perfect. That gave me enough time to do a little more that half the deck.

Mick, I've not worked with polyester before. How much working time would that mixture give you? Pot life?

Tallcanadian- good question? I've never put a timer on it to see how long the stuff lasts- you are just in that rush, rush mode! I would say thought that mix gives me about 20 minutes- give or take- before it starts slowwwlllyyy gelling up. Usually whenever I mix the hardner thin like that I put a heat lamp or crank up the torpedo heater right when I'm done for a couple minutes too.

I still have my pics to post from last night yet. We did alot of running around today and went snow tubing at the ski resort this afternoon/evening with the kids. They loved the tubing and my daughter says she wants to go back on Sunday already! I love snow days and off from school!

I'm out on the boat right now doing my final inner transom skin just to tie everything in and the knee walls.

The deck came out great!!! I couldn't be happier with the final coat. Once I'm done with everything tonight it just needs to be sanded down then flipped to start the filling of knicks on the bottom and then paint!

I will try and post everything later tonight

You'll need at least 8 oz of cloth on the deck. 3.5 oz isn't strong enough.

How about going with a layer of 1708?

1708 is overkill. It equals 24 oz and soaks up a tremendous amount of resin.

Additional layers equaling about 5 oz will be fine. Chopped Strand Mat goes on first and Hexel on top.

The reason for 8 oz minimum is that the hull is flexible and the deck isn't. The fiberglass bond that connects the deck to the hull has to be strong. Also, if there is going to be walking on the deck the surface will be more stronger and last much longer.

Its also a big plus to fiberglass the underside of the deck plywood for water/moisture proofing.

I did this with one layer of 1.5 oz CSM and I guess it turned out okay but was more $$ put into resin.

If interested, check out my blog entries from last year starting from July 25th. http://batboat.blogspot.com/2009/08/batboat-rebuild-day-37-july-25th-2009.html

This attached image was part of my quirey here a while back. Unfortunately, I only had 7.5 oz worth of cloth on hand when I was told 8 was needed.

The Batboat is going to be like sitting in a cockpit and the flooring will be vinyl therefore wear will not become a problem and I am able to get by with 7.5oz. The seam connecting the deck to the hull will be reinforced this spring with 1 or 2 additional oz of CSM.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Darren- I apprecite your comments and concern. I have to find out what weight mat I have to be exact but I was told by several people including the guys at the boat place I go to just glass in the edges to the hull, poly the rest of the deck, and I'll be fine.

I have 3 layers of CSM on my hull, seacast stringers, closed cell foam under the deck, a layer of poly and then mat on the underside and sides of the deck, a layer of poly and then two layers of mat on the top. Isn't there a point where you say I'm doing to much and adding to much weight to the boat?

I couldn't imagine added another three layers of mat to the deck! This thing is a tank already and very solid, especially from the deck down! I don't want to get into a pissing battle and I've seen your diagram a while back but man I'm not building a sea worthy ship here. I'm fixing up a 1962 fiberglass 15 footer that will be used a couple times a month to pull the kids around on a raft and do some fishing on.

Arch and Bob- Decks done and I just finished up with the knee walls. I have three layers of mat where the cut-out opening was. I have to do the sides tomorrow.

I will be posting the pics tonight in a little while.

Yea. You have done a lot to the boat. It will be okay, then. :)

Sometimes it is confusing for me to tell one project from another when I am reading three threads at once! lol!

Darren- I know I could do more on the deck, but this is where I will stop and hope that everything I did leading up to this point to sure up the hull with extra csm, custom stringers with seacast, and pourable foam will be enough to give this boat a new life for years to come.

I looked at your batman site- that is a pretty, pretty cool boat! And by the way you missed some things in your expense report like about $100 in rollers and brushes:eek: Those things really add up- I lost track of how many brushes I've used up to this point!

Thanks Again

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Well going back- this is what we got Tuesday night and all day Wednesday. We got about 16"'s at our place and then drifts Thursday night into Friday. Two snow days off from school- the perks of being a teacher!!! I was out snow throwing my driveway and 3 of my neighbors on and off for about 8 hours to keep ahead of the storm. This is the most snow we got here in years. The last I can remember we got this much was when we moved in here in 2003.

My path back to the boat! It's all drifted shut now- I just trudge through it and melt the snow off by the heater!

These picks were taken in the morning- it continued to snow until 7-8 at night. By the time it was done snowing I was walking around my truck to clean it off and the snow was up to the bumper

Ok- I know you hate the white stuff and you want boat pics! These are from last night when I did the final layer of mat on the deck. I ran them from side to side this time overlapping the seems about 4 inches. I started at the back and worked to the front so that water would run from the bow to the stern over a seem and not into a seem. I actually laid the mat down, poured poly across the mat, and then used a 6" flat edge to trowl around the poly. The I went to a roller to smooth everything out and eliminate high spots. This worked great for me- I had zero bubbles or air pockets. I couldn't be happier with the way it looked when I went in today and saw the end result!

Everything cut, and laid out(I didn't switch the seems yet- I did before I started)

Here is the end product after sweating my a_s of running around and glassing!

Like I said earlier, when I went out tonight and saw the deck- I couldn't be happier! A good sanding to give it some tooth and it will be ready for paint.

Tonight I put a layer of csm on the inner transom (don't know why, I had it cut from a while ago- prob just to tie everything out and make the back uniform).
Then I moved onto the knee walls and tied them into the deck with three layers of mat. I should have done this before I did the deck but what am I going to do about it now- live and learn for the next time(I didn't just say that- there won't be a next time!). I will add a couple more layers for rigidity and strength tomorrow because I have to tie them into the side of the boat yet. They weren't esthetically pleasing to my eye but once totally done I will be able to give them a good sanding to even everything out. At this point, I realized the scope of the project and how many little things it is going to take to get to the end of this thing! Just keep knocking out the little things and eventually the end will be near.

That's it for tonight. I gotta get some sleep- we have an in-service day tomorrow before the holiday weekend:(

Goodnight!

Gosh Darnit! I can't help but stop thinking now- should I put down a layer of csm on the deck yet:confused::mad::(:mad::(

What do you guys think? Honest assessment. You know what I have into it- do you think it really needs it???
